After weeks of denying any knowledge of his whereabouts, Saudi officials confirmed that Washington Post columnist and Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi died in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
A statement released through state-run media said 18 Saudis have been arrested and are being investigated in connection with the case, The New York Times reported.
The statement cited the kingdom’s public prosecutor, who said that an investigation had concluded that an argument broke out between Khashoggi and men who met him inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, leading to “a fistfight that led to his death.”
Turkish officials suspected within hours of Khashoggi’s disappearance that he was likely killed.
His body has not yet been located.
More to come…
