What you are describing is called recomping. It's a slow process but solid plan for those who want to hold on to leanness year round
I don't agree that a surplus has to be in the 500 cal range but as you go from a beginner to intermediate lifter a small energy surplus is absolutely necessary to see consistent, appreciable, gains

I don’t have to use bodybuilder jargon to prove I know what I’m talking about, my body & my bloodwork is the proof. My diet consists of cutting carbs as the day progresses, portion control & eating every three hours. I wrestled, boxed & was a running back in high school. I’m currently a career firefighter so I’ve always remained active. I’ve never drank, smoked or used drugs so my doctor jokes that I’m physically 28 even though I’m 39. No matter your program, all it requires is discipline, sacrifice & consistency.
