We've been able to confirm that Texas fans should expect some good news in the recruiting arena tomorrow. We won't post anything specific because, as always, we want the young man to enjoy his announcement, in-full, on his time.

We will have the details and a couple of write-ups with quotes on this immediately after his announcement.

Herman is doing work as we head down the stretch to NSD.

Brennan has a lot of solid offers. Don't know if he will commit. When you have Georgia, Ole Miss, TCU, Baylor, and OU recruiting you, it's tough to say anything.

Mohammad is probably a no for UT sadly. UH is slowly dying already and you can see it based on how they played against SDSU.

Keondre is probably a lock even though he has solid offers.

This should be interesting. UT will easily snag every 4-5 star recruit that would have went the Ed Oliver route, but we still need something to show for.

Yeah I read that the staff informed Mohammed that we aren't recruiting him. We're leaning more towards #1 ILB JUCO Gary Johnson

I think the closest we'll get to a five star is four star defensive end "K'Lavon Chaisson" he's trending in favor of us. He had 4 sacks at the under armour all American game and like 2 tackles for loss. Look him up on hudl for his game film

I think it's either the Bimage kid that decommitted from Houston or it's K'Lavon Chaisson. Chaisson is a must get. Straight four star beast defensive end

We'll be just fine without Marvin Wilson. We've got our eyes set on 2018 DT Keondre Coburn. He's a must get out of Houston, Texas

Gentlemen we have a commit alert!!!

3 Star OLB and former Houston Cougars commit Marqez Bimage has committed to the University of Texas.

[see tweet]

The Longhorns excelled at finding players with position versatility and high ceilings under Charlie Strong. Texas landed another player with that profile when Brenham linebacker Marqez Bimage committed to Texas today. The former Houston commit chose Texas over offers from Baylor, California, Kansas State, LSU, and Texas Tech.

Bimage was one of the first players targeted by the Texas staff when they left Houston, and they made their interest clear to him right off the bat. Brenham’s star defender saw a rise in status late in his recruitment as he fielded interest from multiple schools late in the process, and he decided to open things up just after the dead period began. Baylor made a late push for him, but Texas was a dream scenario for Bimage. Texas targeted Bimage as an edge rusher in a 3-4, but he could also play inside linebacker. With Todd Orlando bringing his multiple defense to Austin, the Longhorns will be looking for players who can fit that scheme.
Bimage has good size at 6’3, 233 lbs. with long arms and a frame to add more weight. Bimage shows a nice first step off the ball, with good quickness to the inside. He shows violent hands and good leverage, and he runs the arc well to pressure from the edge. Bimage has a relentless motor, and he shows an extra gear when closing on the ball carrier. Once Bimage arrives it’s usually with explosion. He shows a nice array of pass rushing moves, and there are a few clips of him beating All-American offensive tackle Walker Little on his film. He also uses his long arms and plus awareness to knock down passes and strip the ball. Bimage moves well laterally, and he shows a good ability to change direction. There are a few areas of improvement Bimage could focus on. He could use more consistent hand placement, and he is prone to cut blocks. He also struggles a bit at dipping his shoulder when turning the edge to cut close angles to the quarterback. He showed constant improvement over the course of his high school career, especially between his junior and senior season.

Final Verdict: With film that gets better each time you view it, Bimage appears to be one of the more underrated prospects in the state. His total package might remind some of Malcolm Roach due to his similar skillset and under appreciation in the ranking process. Bimage could be a plug and play weapon at inside linebacker and edge rusher. His versatility could get him on the field early, and if he continues to physically develop you’re looking at a player who could play at an all-conference level for several years. His athletic ability and tenacious motor are exactly what NFL franchises covet in today’s era of sub-packages. While this might not tilt the recruiting rankings much it is an important acquisition for Texas as they look to fill holes in the depth chart.

I have an update with some more important news from thefootballbraniacs

Toneil Carter- As most remember, RB Toneil Carter was planning to officially visit Texas the weekend before the dead period, before he eventually decided to cancel that visit and was going to enroll early at Georgia. Well things changed and Georgia no longer had a spot for Carter to enroll early (Texas fans can write UGA RBs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel thank you letters) and he ended up committing to Texas during the dead period and will enroll early. Since he hasn’t taken his official visit to Texas, he will be doing that on January 13th…the same weekend he’s moving in at Texas.

One reason this is interesting is that another guy officially visiting Texas that weekend is Bishop Dunne (TX) CB Chevin Calloway. I was told Carter and Calloway spent some good time together last week at the Under Armour All-American game. While I still think Arkansas will be tough to beat for Calloway, getting him to spend another weekend with Carter isn’t a bad thing.

Arkansas will get the final visit for Calloway on January 20th.

Javelin Guidry- 2017 CB, Javelin Guidry (Vista Murrieta, CA) was once a Houston commit under the now current Texas staff. Guidry’s family moved to California this past summer but before that he attended and played at Cedar Park, HS in the Austin area.

I caught up with the father of Javelin Guidry who let me know that there has been quite a bit of communication between them and Texas. He added that should Texas offer they are tentatively scheduled to visit on January 27th.

Coveted Quality in a Texas cornerback- Some coaches like bigger CBs and some put a premium on speed regardless of size. Everyone prefers to have both but speaking to a source on the Texas side I’m told that Texas CB coach, Jason Washington covets speed and explosion over size. You’ll note that Washington promptly went after guys like Kary Vincent, Tre Brown and Chevin Calloway, three CBs that aren’t the biggest guys but move very well.

Guidry fits that mould. In fact he’s faster than Vinceny and Calloway and even slightly faster than Tre Brown (who is an elite sprinter as well). Guidry was the TX UIL 5a 100 m track champion. He ran a blazing 10.41. Guidry also ran an incredible 4.35 SPARQ verified laser 40. So he certainly has the type of speed/explosion that coach Washington is looking for. Guidry is on the smaller side at around 5’9.5 but I’ve seen him live a number of times and he can play multiple techniques and cover receivers with varying size and skill sets.

Taquon Graham- I reported awhile back that Temple (TX) DE Taquon Graham was going to officially visit Texas on January 20th, with most of the Texas commits. But it seems things have changed. I was told last night that Graham now plans to officially visit Texas on January 13th.

I was also told that Oscar Giles has stayed in contact with Graham over the dead period as he tries to continue to develop that relationship with the Texas commit. Oklahoma, the Longhorns primary competition for Graham, has been pushing the fact that Graham already has a strong relationship with the Sooner staff. I was also told it looks like Graham will visit Oklahoma on January 20th. Texas is very keen to hold on to Graham and has made that clear to him and his family.

It’s very possible that Texas wanted the schedule change in the hopes that a great Texas visit my prompt Graham to cancel the OU visit the week before while he’s in Austin. I was told Graham will likely take the Oklahoma visit no matter what, just to keep his word.

Based on the latest I’ve heard from sources around Graham, it still sounds like Texas will hold onto Graham as NSD approaches, but I can’t understate how important his official visit to Texas will be

National Offers- All it took was one day for the Texas staff to be officially complete for some big offers to be extended to some elite 2018 recruits.

Fairfield (OH) 5-star OT Jackson Carman

[see video]

Keondre Coburn- As I stated, Texas offered some elite national recruits yesterday. But they also offered one of the best in Texas for 2018 as well in Westfield (TX) DT Keondre Coburn.

[see video]
It’s obvious that Texas has a connection to this recruitment in a few ways. The first is the Meekins family, as former Westfield HC Corby Meekins is the TE’s coach at Texas. Also his brother Matt Meekins, is the current head coach at Westfield. Texas also has one of Coburn’s teammates in 2017 RB Daniel Young committed to Texas.

When I asked Coburn if those connections to Texas give the Longhorns and edge he said the familiarity with them certainly helps Texas.

Coburn also let us know that he plans to attend a Texas jr. day in the coming month or so.

At 6’1 Coburn is a bit undersized but he has the ability to get to the QB which is a trait that fits Todd Orlando’s attacking base 3-4 defense.

With such an early offer it appears Coburn is somewhere near the top of Texas’ DT list and it certainly feels like the Longhorns could be tough to beat here.
