Uhhh...'97 was NEVER viewed as that. WTF?? Now, people did always bring up the 'shiny suit' BS, but that was really a small portion of the music coming out then, but of course when something is huge, people forget about everything else. With that said, I could argue '96 was better (it was), but '97 was dope too, but I knew from that point on, sh1t was going to get progressively worse. . I was right.

A lot of us weren’t feeling the music scene that year because after Big died, hip hop got super commercial overnight. Every rapper who was grimey in the early to mid 90’s suddenly switched over to a jiggy image. That’s why DMX in 98’ was such a breath of fresh air due to the contrast of what the hip hop scene was like shortly before he blew up

1997... The War Report came out during a time when Puffy wanted to make happy music.


1997 was a Sad year for Hip Hop. It's crazy how I was born in February too. A month before Biggie was slayed.




We lost Biggie.

Pac wasn't even dead a whole year and cats were still mourning

Snoop was starving until Master P decided to see Suge at the prison.

MC Eiht had a slept on album.


The Firm flopped.

No Way Out came out as well as Harlem World

Vol. 1 came out...Jay had Puff executive produce the album. Made everyone go back and listen to Reasonable Doubt which got a reissue in 98


Hot Boys album came out...Cats didn't appreciate it until Universal decided to reissue all the early Cash Money albums.


Master P had n1ggas saying Ughhh


Mobb Deep was on a break hence them releasing the Back From A Hiatus mixtape


Soundbombing 1 came out

My favorite album of 1997 other than War Report would be Supa Dupa Fly by Missy Elliott


I'll give Magoo a Honorable mention. Tim and him did a good job with their album.

Luckily, Hip Hop rebounded in 1998.

DMX came out and put a end to the shiny suit raps. When I was a kid in Baltimore, n1ggas were playing DMX everywhere. He was the first n1gga to release two #1 albums in the same year since Pac was dead.

Jay-Z was finally getting mainstream love once Hard Knock Life came out.


400 Degreez came out. Had a slow burn @ first. I didn't like Jigga on the remix of "Ha" just like he messed up the remix to Go Crazy.


No Limit ran 1998 of course.


Tical 2000 came out. Method Man and Redman had the audacity to put out 20 plus track albums.



Capadonna had a slept on album of course. I was playing The Pillage this morning.


N.O.R.E released his debut and after that we started hearing more of the Neptune's.


Heaven's Movie came out. Sadly, Tomica's fat a$s fu#ked up the album and didn't clear the samples either.

Timbaland released his album.


OutKast had the best album of 1998 !!! fu#k what anyone says. Aquemini aged better than Vol 2.
