Some with explanations; and some needed no explanation like 2003/50 Cent
2000 - Eminem
2001 - JayZ/Nas (tie)
- I'm not a big fan of ties but these two in 2001 are prob the most equal year span foes on this list; fueled by each other
2002 - Eminem
- Maybe the most dominant year from a rapper in this 15 year span; even the defending champs Jay/Nas are not in the same stratosphere as Em this year; 1.3 million first week sales of 'The Eminem Show'; and a number one movie and soundtrack in the classic 8Mile
2003 - 50 Cent
2004 - Kanye West
- I gotta be honest this was tough; 50 Cent has a very strong case to be a back to back champ with the GRODT and Beg for Mercy hangover; this is a testament of how amazing Kanye West's debut year and album was
2005 - Kanye West
- And we have our first back to back champ (50 fans ain't gonna like this, trust me I remember how big 'The Massacre' was)... This is not an album sales list, but it's a factor... This isn't even a music quality list, but its a factor. Kanye's talent reached heights and broke through barriers very few hip hop artist have in 2005... Garnering a billboard 200 #1 hit; releasing an critically acclaimed highly successful sophomore album; going on epic and now classic award show rants, and cementing his name and self on the throne.
2006 - T.I.
- Lets be clear Jay Z outsold every hip hop artist this year by a large margin but if you were living in 2006; T.I was the man, 'The King'... He had everything from the the streets to suburban America in his palm
2007 - Kanye West
2008 - Lil Wayne
2009 - LilWayne (Young Money)
- Lil Wayne had no official album release in 2009 but still dominated with guest features, mixtapes, and bringing the world his YMCMB crew and introducing the masses to Nicki Minaj and Drake
2010 - Kanye West
- Epic, Epic, EPIC year from Ye.. Now four time champion
2011 - Kanye West/Jay Z
- Could easily go Drake here and start off his fore coming dominance off early but Watch The Throne was the most anticipated talked about event in hip hop; and the tour = EPIC... Jay Z should thank Ye here cause I could easily just have him as a singles champ who as an individual had a pretty crazy year to say the least
2012 - Drake
- 6 God snatches the throne for the first time
2013 - Kendrick
- Kendrick is like the 2002 Buccaneers to Drakes 2002 Patriots. With a 2012 4th Qtr release of GKMC, and the infamous 'Control' verse it set Kendrick up for a monster 2013; hands down the most talked about artist in all of music in 2013; if this didn't happen Drake may have an unheard of four year reign
2014 - Drake
- no need for an album release; Drake take the crown back
2015 - Drake
- still time left in the year but it's pretty clear cut, Drakes having an Eminem 2002-esq dominant year... Arguably the two hottest albums of the year came from him; a complete annihilation of Meek Mill (let's not forget about ethering Tyga's existence with one bar)... With Views coming early 16' should we just give him that year in advance?
Multiple Champs
Kanye West - 5x champ
Drake - 3x champ
Jay Z - 2x champ
Eminem - 2x champ
Lil Wayne - 2x champ
