His work means a lot to him, there's nothing wrong with that. A lot of artists are sensitive, that's part of what makes them perceptive. If they didn't care about the validation of others they probably wouldn't have sought fame, that need for external validation is what drives people like this to work hard and do promo and whatever else.

Big Sean is the most relatable rapper in the mainstream to me. He's much richer than me but his music for the last couple years is always about him bettering himself and trying to let go of traumas and be healthy. Far cry from the dude that was trying to blow with songs like a$s and My Last. He's who I think J Cole should be. J Cole just comes off as a pretentious I'm more intelligent than you and live a boring nice life even though I'm rich but I'm not like them but I'm definitely better than you on some Miami Heat LeBron interview type sh1t while actually living the life of the dude in "She Knows" in real life. But there's people that can relate to that too so I guess he can rock.
