u should allready know they arent rich what are u a kid come now the industry is just like anyther industry u pay for everything u put out u pay for lettering in ur cd booklet u pay for studio time u pay producers for beats u pay engineers for a mix then u pay mastering engineers for ur master since most artist dont own they masters all the money coming in is split between them and the label not to mention if sumeone has points on the album due too sample clearences or just for producing a joint or giving the artist a good tip so now instead of u getting all the profits from the album u are now splitting ur points with lets say 5 producers a mastering engineer and 3 publishing companies due to sample clearences now u getting what 30 cent an album u sell 700,000 thats gold u aint eating that tuff of that but lets say u got iono a million dollars off that the record label spent 500,000 on promoting the album now due to re coup u dont have to pay it back right away so u tack that on to ur second album basically saying that thru the profits of ur second album u will repay past debt and current debt which now means u owe the label now u go on a tour to promote thats where most artist make the real money but even then they gotta pay for venue rental tour buses rentals back up dancers hype men dj etc the industry is like working a regular 9 to 5 with just higher pay specially if u aint selling

Depends if you do alot of touring you should be straight, many rappers are lazy and try to make most their money off the CD's.. not good.

Carl Icahn, made $4,800,000,000 last year. That's rich. Forbes 400 cats...they're rich.

Take all those rapper incomes and halve them due to taxes. Then figure out how much they pay out for all their expenditures for their career, and then how much more they blow on all the useless sh*t they buy.

Sad thing is more than one of the rappers on that list kids will be broke. Rich people can be defined as, kids never even close to being broke.

"...Depends if you do alot of touring you should be straight..."
Not as much as you think anymore...back in the day tour money was sacred, but times have changed alot.

Ever since the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, that was snuck in by Congress at the beginning of 1999, contractually, labels have been able to take more money from other sources.

I can't speak for every label; but I've actually done business with Sony Records & Interscope Records...so I can speak on those for sure. For about the past 5-6 years, they have been legally allowed to negoiate surprisingly large financial rights deals for tour/show money within in the recording contracts, especially if they give a big advance, using financial loss due to downloading & technology. (ie- It was revealed at a music conference I was at that in 2006, that Interscope contractually gets 51% of 50 Cent's tour money).

So don't fool yourself and think a rapper can get rich off of tour money alone. In the 1990's it was alot more possible, not anymore though.

props... been saying that sh*t

but to answer the threadstarters question... NO!

people get caught up in thge music video bullsh*t. all that sh*t in the music videos is rented. when you see them flossin money around 99% of the time its an advance from the record label.

artist only make like 5 cents per unit sold IF THEY ARE LUCKY!

so yea there is money to be made and certain artist are in fact rich but the majority are not.

think about it, if you are a record label shooting a video for your artist you arent going to have him driving some hatchback or something. you want him rolling in a benz. thus, creating the image that people buy into so much that they are all rich when in fact most of them are broke.
