yo.. NO sh*t sales are down. THERE DOWN IN EVERY CATAGORY ACROSS THE BOARD.. why??? because of people like us lol.. how can u guys sit here and blame south rappers.. north, westcoast or east rappers for this??? its people like us who download albums for free. thats the problem. rap isnt dead. rap is more alive then it EVER was. if it wasnt for rap music. i dont think black and whites would have bonds with each other like they currently do. all music sales are down. not just rap. and its because we download this sh*t for free and supply it to our friends for whatever. 5 bucks.. a few cds for a sack of some good bud. whatever you do with ur free music u get. u know u supply it to your friends and your friends think your the sh*t because u do it. i read the topic to this thread and i thought NOOOO sh*t!! lol if u guys didnt know rap sales were down already.. seriously what world are u living in? like i said its not just rap all music is down. and believe me rap isnt going anywhere, because of this website and others like it, rap has grown to more then it ever could have been with "record sales".

this was an awsome read. and for hiphop being dead ehh i think sometimes it is but then again i feel there just going to bring more people into the light. like i was chill'n out in the village, most of the stores was bumping wordsworth, k-os, stronghold ish and so on. i hardly hear a mainstream track playing. i think the world is changing in hiphop and people are going to start to love this sound they once been egnoring, and finaly hear for themselfs that this is what has been missing. and hiphop will come back with a bang back on that 90's era ;] probably take some time yo but it will happen.

hip hop is the same as its always been, the only problem is we don't get to hear all thats out there cuz the only sh*t that gets airplay is the songs they think appeal more to younger listeners. in 2000, djs stopped having control over what got played because major corporations like radio one and clearchannel started telling them what to play based on how much the artist promotional budget was, and major labels give better budgets for promotion to artists that they believe will fit into mainstream . in 2005 clearchannel made a rule where indie artists would not even be considered for airplay unless they had a big budget behind them. thats why we only hear about 12 out of hundreds of songs out now, and all 12 of those songs are what they believe young listeners would buy into the most.

oh yeah one thing about hip hop some of you need to keep in mind

some people just don't wanna hear lyrical rappers (this isn't me in particular); they don't care about those similes, meta4's, punchlines, delivery etc. i've been reading this site and so many times have i seen this, a few of my homies have told me this too not alot, but some.

what is mainly selling in hip hop rap, is what people want to hear, i wouldn't even blame the artists no more, if anything be mad at the fans are spoonfed and want ;they want and they must want it so much they'll cop it. When someone told me jeezy was k!lling nas in sales i was like "ok so everyone wants that hood sh*t right now" even i liked a couple tracks off the jeezy (particularly j.e.e.z.y), but buying? ni99a please.....i don't support what he is saying that much to give up my hard earned. I could go into my own moral reasons but knowin how boxden ni99as is......um no.

last but not least, if any of u are sick of rap listen to another genre, i saw some dude who said he listens to techno now. You aren't alone, i bump daft punk. Some of my homies look at me crazy, but im enjoying what im listening to.

A good question i ask myself is....are hip hop fans so close minded that they'd rather complain about the music genre they so call "love" instead of just listening to another genre or is that all u can get into?

I think the sales decline is more to do with people becoming more critical of what they listen to.

You have hip hop fans talking about hip hop is dead, you have pop fans saying pops dead, heavy metal fans saying heavy metals dead, punk fans saying punk is dead, country fans saying country is dead, techno fans saying techno is dead.

Music as a whole is in a decline... The industries been monopolised to much

Agreed.

Rap takes the brunt of it all since it is currently the most popular. Popular music in general has been targeted since the beginning.

As time passes, different genres of music control the ever-growing market, and whichever one is the biggest (most profitable) at the time must push the envelope and eventually k!ll itself.

Of course rap will die. Back in 1977 no one ever thought rock would.

Duh.

Remember in the good ol' days when almost every rapper had a "MC" to start their moniker? Since then it's changed to "Young" or "Lil", why u say? Cuz there ain't no such thing as an "MC" anymore. It's so funny that I find myself still listening to sh*t from the early-mid 90's. I grew up DPG, my first album was the "Doggystyle" tape. Everything I LISTENED to was original. Everything I HEAR now is just a re-run.

good point.:applause:

some of this is true....and to be honest most blame falls on the south, like it or not, i've never seen a whole bunch of n*ggaz who constantly talk bout the same sh*t over and over again.....joc, wayne, jeezy....sh*t gets stale after a while

but theres hope with n*ggaz like mos def, talib, and common....

man i misss the days of the pharcyde and tribe called quest when n*ggaz actually had sh*t to talk bout
man i feel you on who your sayin, although i wouldnt say blame the south only. its rappers from every coast. i got this friend of mine who thinks he listens to great rap and shows off in his car by sayin "i only listen to good rap" but all hes blastin is sh*t like jeezy and dipset where its like the same commercial gangsterism over and over again over a different beat, not to mention their lyrisicm is way below subpar. they drop i good line every once in awhile, a good song even less then that, but they got these listeners out there that think this 'ballllllin' sh*t is amazing.

i'm not a fan of weezy either but he does drop a hot song IMO every now and then, maybe alot of it is cause i can't stand half the beats he raps over(what the hell happened to consistancy manny fresh) and weezy hasn't really talked about much anything different for years now.

some on gunit got better skills on the mic but they spend half their time with their d*ck in dirt beefin (50 esp) with every single rapper they don't like, baby a.ss sh*t like "oh you rapped with my enemy now you my enemy so im gonna write 15 diss songs torwards you for some filler tracks on upcoming mixtapes"

everybody it seems nowadays is tryin to rip everybody down im just hopin DETOX sheds some light with NAS, JAY Z, GAME, and 50 all on the same CD.
i :applause: nas and jay z for what they did, they makin some money... now people callin em pussies for doin it, but its good music to hear them together.

they thinkin they gotta earn respect by glorifyin cookin crack, actin like lovin life is all about materialism and 27 inch rims and 75grand watches and chains and platinum teeth and tearin everyone down in a 'survival of the most gangster'.
its not the true gansterism thats k!llin the music, its the fact most rappers now try to proove it on wax when hip hop is supposed to save the hood its imploding and bringin everybody back down into it
i barely touched on this and barely mentioned any rappers, most not worth listening to anymore. theres also alot of great rappers out there, but somehow unfortunately... maybe thanks to the music industry, they don't get the commercialism they deserve

all thoughts are welcomed

Word to that.
Hip-hop lately is just such bull-sh*t. I was raised to be a gangster child, and most people don't step up from that, but most people still think of me as a gangster, mostly because I'm a Latin King and sell weed an all that. But you know what? I fu*kin hate this music. I hate hearin it in my schools played by people who don't know what they're playin. I LOVE a good gangsta tune every now an then, but this sh*t SUCKS! A lot of good music is bad in a lot of ways, but is redeemed by some quality, like really good lyricism, or a bangin beat. Neither seems requisite any more.
Brand Nubian. The Geto Boys. Et cetera. Good artists of gangsta music. They did it. These fools don't do it any more. I'm a producer, and I just can't stand this bullsh*t any more. I'm gonna keep producin for SBR&P, but as for my personal sh*t, it's merengue an rancho from here.

Labcabincalifornia is probably one of THE MOST UNDERRATED hip hop CLASSICS and every tribe LP was flava's but your right the south recycles sh*t so much its like they sucked the life out of the sh*t I mean you have exceptions else where and not all southern artist fall in that group but the vast majority do

Everyone should stop listening to it. Just leave the true fans to their hip hop. Then all the corporate artists who have nothing to bring to the game wont have a market and hip hop will do a 180. Maybe without the materialistic rap sh*t being everywhere, my people will go out and get jobs instead of sitting around looking for a hustle, and finally we can make something for ourselves.

Just take hip hop out of the hands of the people who enslaved us years ago, and maybe we can break from this new form of slavery now.

i 0donno...im from nyc....you gotta look at this this way.....southern rap is like electronic dance music... on the other hand...nas/az/common etc. ....they are more like roots rap to me....eventually rap will be like reggae...where u have roots reggae artists like damian marley, richie spice (nas/common type rap) and the you gonna have pop dancehall elephant/beenie man (young jeezy/jim jones) .....theres just going to be a split...at some point...it has to give...but i think rap can't really die out....i mean believe it or not, theres still ridiculous amounts of money in the rap game for artists, so people are still buying records and going to concerts.....the reggae comparison is how rap will become ..mark my words

But Bob Marley remains one of the most consistently-selling artists of all time. People buy the C.D.'s because they love him. Besides, rap is modern American pop, or at least for the moment, and reggae was never pop music.
