By Tom Shanahan, Chargers.com

The Kansas City Chiefs capitalized on two Chargers turnovers with touchdowns in the second half to come from behind and beat the Bolts 30-16 Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium.

Tight end Tony Gonzalez caught a 22-yard touchdown pass three plays after an interception by linebacker Derrick Johnson to tie the game at 16-16 and cornerback Tyrone Brackenridge returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown for a 30-16 lead with 7:24 left in the game.

The Chargers' loss dropped their record to 1-3, while the Chiefs improved to 2-2.

The Chargers opened the game's scoring with a Nate Kaeding 24-yard field goal on their first possession and a LaDainian Tomlinson 5-yard touchdown run on their second for a 10-0 lead with 3:56 left in the first quarter.

Kansas City put up its first points with 11:10 left in the second quarter, but the Chiefs had to settle for a field goal when the Bolts stopped Larry Johnson for a 2-yard loss on a third-and-goal from the 1. Dave Rayner's 21-yard field goal trimmed the Chargers' lead to 10-3.

The Chargers led 16-6 at halftime when the Kaeding sandwiched second-quarter field goals of 51 and 38 yards around a 25-yard field goal by Rayner.

Rayner kicked a 41-yard field goal to trim the Chargers' lead to 16-9 before the Gonzalez's touchdown catch tied the game.

After a Chargers punt, the Chiefs took their first lead on a 51-yard touchdown pass from Huard to Dwayne Boe.

The Chargers travel next Sunday to face the Denver Broncos

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers turned in one of the best performances of his career last Sunday in Denver and the NFL recognized him for the performance Wednesday. Rivers was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Bolts to a 41-3 win at Denver.

Rivers completed 13-of-18 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. His passer rating of 151.4 was his highest single-game total of his career. Coincidentally, his previous career high of 136.0 came against the Broncos last December at Qualcomm Stadium.

The honor was Rivers’ second Player of the Week award. He was also recognized last October following his 334-yard, two-touchdown performance against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Bolts’ starting signal caller is also in the running for FedEx Air Player of the Week. Fans can click here to vote for Rivers as well as FedEx Ground Player of the Week nominee Michael Turner

Sproles tired of being ‘close’
Send to a friend Print Page Adjust font size Wednesday, Oct 10, 2007
By Casey Pearce, Chargers.com
Chargers return specialist Darren Sproles again feels like he’s close, but that’s a word he’s tired of using.

“I’ve got to get in the end zone,” Sproles said. “I’ve been close for a while. It’s time to get past just being close.”

The last two weeks Sproles has appeared to be one defender away from the end zone. Sunday at Denver he had an impressive 23-yard punt return that set up the Chargers’ first touchdown of the day. Two weeks ago he had a 17-yard punt return and also returned kickoffs for 32 and 42-yard gains.

“I’ve been able to get past that first wave and get into the open field,” Sproles said. “That’s the big thing. I just have to make that last guy miss.”

While he’s yet to score on a return in the regular season, Sproles has made big plays and has helped his team gain valuable field position. That has Head Coach Norv Turner believing Sproles could find the end zone soon.

“He’s finding the space and when there’s not much he’s sticking it and getting that extra three or four yards,” Turner said. “If you keep doing that, when you find a team that’s maybe not quite as good in coverage as some of the team’s we’ve played, that’s where you go and get the long run.”

Sproles has modest averages of 25.2 yards on kickoffs and 8.3 yards on punts, but his consistency has pleased Turner and Special Teams Coach Steve Crosby. Turner has also taken notice of the toughness Sproles has shown.

“I think one of the things that people talked about was Darren wasn’t quite physical enough and couldn’t break tackles,” Turner said. “The thing that has impressed me is that he is being very physical with his returns.”

Medical update

Defensive tackle Jamal Williams was given Wednesday off due to a coach’s decision. Wide receiver Vincent Jackson (shoulder) and linebacker Brandon Siler (back) also missed all of Wednesday’s practice. Turner doesn’t believe any of the three are in danger of missing Sunday’s game.

For Oakland, quarterback Josh McCown (toe) and defensive tackle Gerard Warren (quad) did not practice and running back LaMont Jordan (back) and defensive end Derrick Burgess (calf) were limited.

Facing off

When asked his thoughts regarding facing the Raiders, Turner downplayed any personal significance.

“When you’ve bounced around like I have, you can do that quite often,” Turner joked in reference to coaching against one of his former clubs.

Turner explained that any personal feelings about the game are largely trumped by his commitment to getting his current team ready to play a crucial AFC West contest.

“This is a big game,” Turner said. “It doesn’t matter if I’ve coached there or not. It’s a big football game for everyone in our organization and everyone in their organization. We’re preparing for it in that manner and we got a good start today with the way we practiced.”

Arrive early

With a capacity crowd expected for Sunday’s game, fans should expect delays getting to Qualcomm Stadium and into the parking lot.

The parking lot will open at 8 am and could close as early as 11 am. The stadium entry gates will open at 11 am for General Ticket Holders and at 10 am for Club Seat and Suite Ticket Holders.

Fans planning to tailgate are only permitted to do so in their own parking space. Police will issue citations to fans whose tailgate parties infringe on neighboring parking spaces or parties which block sidewalk and pedestrian areas. Fans are also reminded that glass bottles are not allowed in the parking lot.

The Chargers have signed rookie free agent running back Lydell Ross from Ohio State to a two-year deal.

Ross, 6-0, 225, rushed for 2,426 yards and 26 touchdowns during his career with Ohio State. In 2004, he rushed for 475 yards (4.1 avg.) and four touchdowns while playing in nine games for the Buckeyes.

Ross was born December 14, 1983 in Tampa, Florida. He was a first-team All-Florida and a Super Prep All-American at Gaither High School in Tampa.

The Chargers also announced that the team has released rookie defensive tackle Lui Fuga and rookie tight end Cody McCarty (Reserve-Did Not Report).

On the Chargers' fifth play Sunday in Denver, going against a cornerback who has been to seven straight Pro Bowls, a stylish new Antonio Gates was on display.
Lined up as a wide receiver at the 34-yard line, with Champ Bailey playing off him 7 yards away, Gates sprinted straight to the 20. There, without slowing, he feinted inside with his upper body. With that movement, Bailey stepped inside and got turned around. Meanwhile, Gates broke outside and was all alone as he caught Philip Rivers' pass going out of bounds at the 11 for a 23-yard gain.

K.C. ALFRED / Union-Tribune
Antonio Gates started the season with a 100-plus-yard game against the Bears and hasn't looked back since.
“I would argue with anyone that's the best corner in the NFL,” Rivers said. “And I haven't seen anyone do that on Champ in any film I've watched.”

That would be the first of Gates' seven catches for 113 yards against the Broncos.

With three 100-yard games through five games, Gates is third in the league with 489 yards and second with 40 receptions. No other tight end is within 10 catches or 80 yards.

There is little reason to doubt Gates is on his way to the best season a tight end has ever had. At this rate, Gates will surpass by far the NFL season records for receptions (Tony Gonzalez's 102 in 2004) and receiving yards (Kellen Winslow's 1,290 in 1980).

Moreover, his ascending skills indicate that, if he remains healthy, any career records held by other tight ends are simply being kept warm until Gates can claim them in the coming years.

But confining Gates to one position is perhaps myopic at this point.

“Him being the best tight end in the game right now, I don't think that's an argument,” Rivers said. “I think you can argue about him being the best (receiver).”

Gates, who ranks second in the league in receptions and third in receiving yards, is unconcerned with designations.

“I look at it as more of a role I play,” he said. “I take pride in them believing in me to make a play. I don't say, 'OK, they're calling a tight end route or a receiver route.' I look at it like they're calling my number to make a play.”

He caught two passes at Denver, including that first one and his touchdown reception, having lined up as a receiver. While he still catches most of his passes out of the tight end spot, he is running more varied routes out of more personnel groupings this season.

“That's part of what Norv Turner brings to the table – being able to put me in a position where I have a chance to be successful,” Gates said.

Rivers points out, however, a lot of his being open is Gates' own doing.

“Sometimes he's lined up and there is a guy here and a guy here and they say, 'We're doubling him.' ” Rivers said. “He doesn't move any, and he beats 'em.”

Such a play happened on third-and-9 in the third quarter Sunday. Gates faced two defenders, ran straight, juked right, turned left as safety Nick Ferguson fell for the fake and grabbed a 12-yard pass going left toward the sideline. It was Gates' league-leading 17th third-down reception.
It has come to be taken for granted over the past three-plus seasons how Gates takes the ball away from defenders who seem to have him blanketed.

“It doesn't even matter if you have him covered half the time,” Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said yesterday. “He still makes the play.”

That ability is often attributed to Gates' basketball background and his knack for getting great position. But what is becoming just as common is to see Gates run a pristine route that simply confounds defenders and enables him to make a catch unfettered.

It is startling how often it seems no one is covering him. He appears to surprise defenses sometimes – as if they are unaware he might actually be a target.

Funny, since 32 percent of Rivers' 157 passes have gone to Gates.

Asked how you cover Gates, Raiders linebacker Kirk Morrison laughed and said, “I don't know. I guess the first five teams haven't found a way yet.”

It's not an illusion when people remark it appears Gates is hardly running. He has put a lot of work into being a technician, studying film and tweaking his game week to week.

“When you're watching me play now, I'm not this jittery guy,” he said. “I've got a smoothness. I've got a feel for when I can go 100 mph and when I don't have to. It's time, being around guys who know the game – Keenan McCardell, Eric Parker, guys who know route running.”

Gates will talk for an hour about his film study and how he likes to “play chess” with defenders, varying his tendencies in routes. He speaks at length of the trust he and Rivers have built and effusively praises LaDainian Tomlinson's role in his being open.

But he will not address his place in history.

Not about how this season appears headed toward an unprecedented echelon.

“It's too early,” he said. “It's five games.”

And not about a career that could be historic as well
