Foundation recruiting athletes to spur charity

Tuesday, July 17, 2007
By Dan Fitzpatrick, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Pittsburgh Foundation enlisted two star football players yesterday in its quest to turn affluent local athletes into philanthropists, with Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward and safety Troy Polamalu agreeing to launch new funds targeting children and young military veterans.

Mr. Ward, a Super Bowl MVP, and Mr. Polamalu, the long-haired acrobatic tackler, join 6-foot-8 offensive tackle Max Starks as the three Steelers thus far to establish charitable organizations through The Pittsburgh Foundation, a Downtown-based nonprofit that oversees more than 1,000 funds for individual donors. Former Steeler Dwight White, who played between 1971 and 1980 and introduced Mr. Starks to Pittsburgh Foundation President Bill Trueheart, also is in the process of setting up a fund.

"A lot of people recognize athletes, so we can bring more attention to different causes," said Mr. Starks, who created his fund in 2005 focusing on childhood literacy and education. "We want to be recognized as athletes, but also as humanitarians. ... I really enjoy it, making a difference in at least one person's life."

Mr. Ward, who will make $3.5 million this year, asked The Pittsburgh Foundation to manage his philanthropic effort, which will donate to charitable causes affecting children, "rather than trying to reinvent the wheel by establishing my own foundation." Mr. Polamalu, who will make $1.08 million in 2007, started a fund with his wife, Theodora, and named the venture after Theodora's grandfather Harry Panos, a World War II veteran. The Polamalus would like to help soldiers injured in Iraq -- an idea that began with Mr. Polamalu's visit last summer to female soldiers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Some had been injured by roadside bombs.

The signing of two additional Steelers to philanthropic endeavors is the work of The Pittsburgh Foundation's 14-person Sports Outreach Advisory Committee, a group formed to recruit figures from Pittsburgh's sporting community. It is chaired by former Allegheny County chief executive James Roddey and includes former Steelers defensive end L.C. Greenwood; Women's National Basketball a.ssociation star Swin Cash; Pittsburgh Xplosion general manager Freddie Lewis; Katie Leyland, wife of Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland; and Curtis Randle El, financial adviser for investment firm Hefren-Tillotson and brother of former Steelers wide receiver Antwaan Randle El.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2007 Training Camp Preview

[pic - click to view]

By Tony Moss, NFL Editor

(Sports Network) -

REPORT DATES: Rookies July 23rd, Veterans July 23rd

SITE: Saint Vincent College, Latrobe, PA

CAMP OBJECTIVES: The Steelers' veterans will report before any of those on the league's other 31 teams, which is handy given the amount of work new head coach Mike Tomlin has before him in his first summer session. The most pressing concerns are on defense, where major questions remain about how the Tampa-2-loving Tomlin will coexist with coordinator d*ck LeBeau and his zone blitz. The fact that the team drafted a pair of defensive end/outside linebacker hybrids - Lawrence Timmons (Florida State) and LaMarr Woodley (Michigan) in the first two rounds - failed to tip Tomlin's philosophical hand. Other battles worth watching will come from the secondary, where Deshea Townsend, Ike Taylor, and Bryant McFadden are f!ghting for two cornerback jobs, and where Anthony Smith and Ryan Clark are duking it out for free safety honors. On offense, there won't be much philosophical transition from departed coordinator Ken Whisenhunt to Bruce Arians, who served as Pittsburgh's wide receivers coach for the past three years, but the team will be expected to be more consistent behind a fully healthy Ben Roethlisberger from the outset of camp. There are issues on the offensive line, where ex-Buccaneer Sean Mahan is expected to take over for the retired Jeff Hartings at center, and where veteran left guard Alan Faneca could make some waves due to dissatisfaction with his contract.

PRESEASON SCHEDULE: 8/5 vs. New Orleans (Canton); 8/11 vs. Green Bay; 8/18 at Washington; 8/26 vs. Philadelphia; 8/30 at Carolina

Steelers Add Two Players To Roster

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers added two players to their offseason roster today, signing running back Larry Croom and claiming wide receiver Dan Sheldon off waivers.

Croom (5-10, 201), from UNLV, was originally signed by the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2004 and finished with 29 carries for 76 yards in six games that season. He was signed by the Tennessee Titans before their 2005 training camp but was cut later in camp. He also spent time on the Detroit Lions practice in 2005 and was signed to San Diego's 2006 offseason roster. He spent three seasons in NFL Europe.

Sheldon (5-8, 179), from Northern Illinois, was claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons. He was most recently with the Cologne Centurions in NFL Europe and finished second in the league in kickoff returns with a 25.1 average. He was originally signed by the Arizona Cardinals as a free agent in 2005 and spent the season on their practice squad. He then signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2006 before being released and then signed to the Chicago Bears practice squad. The Falcons signed him earlier this year and allocated him to NFL Europe.

All Steelers are scheduled to report to Training Camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., on Monday, July 23.

In addition to being one of only three teams to sign their 1st round draft pick, we have finally extended Polamalu's contract. It's a 4 year deal, the financial terms of the deal haven't been released yet. But its good news!

Actually the details of the contract were announced last night around 7 pmET.

His contract manipulates $33 million through the 2011 season with options & incentives.

It will make him the highest paid Safety in the NFL.

Steelers sign Polamalu to four-year extension

LATROBE, Pa. (July 23, 2007) -- Pittsburgh Steelers star safety Troy Polamalu signed a four-year contract extension worth $30.19 million that makes him the highest-paid player in team history and one of the NFL's top-paid defensive backs.

The deal guarantees the Steelers will keep their most versatile defensive player through the 2011 season, or when he will be 30 -- meaning Polamalu could negotiate another big-money contract before his NFL career ends.

Polamalu, an All-Pro safety in 2005, already was due to make $1,088,000 in salary and $1,722,000 in guaranteed bonuses this season, for a total contract of $2,810,000 and a salary cap value of $1,632,000. His extension kicks in next season and will pay him a guaranteed $15,375,000 during the 2008-2011 seasons in guaranteed money and roster bonuses, which are automatically paid as long as he is on the team.

Previously, the Steelers' highest-paid player was wide receiver Hines Ward, who signed a four-year extension in 2005 that has a maximum value of $25.8 million and guarantees him $10 million. That deal runs through 2009.

Polamalu's signing was the second major contract deal by the Steelers in two days, but is likely to be their last before this season begins. On July 22, they agreed to a five-year contract with outside linebacker Lawrence Timmons, their first-round draft pick, that guarantees him $12 million and could be worth as much as $15 million.

All-Pro guard Alan Faneca wanted to sign a contract extension during the offseason, but was unhappy when he was offered a deal worth less than the NFL's other premier guards.

During a May minicamp, Faneca said this will be his final season in Pittsburgh. Faneca, a five-time All-Pro left guard, is making $4,375,000 this season but could possibly make twice that as a free agent.

Polamalu, one of the most versatile players in Steelers history, was a first-team All-Pro player when Pittsburgh won the Super Bowl during the 2005 season and was a second team All-Pro in 2004. He made the Pro Bowl the last three seasons and, besides being known for the flowing black hair that streams out of his helmet, is widely regarded as one of the league's top defensive players.

Polamalu, a former Southern California player, has 10 sacks and 10 interceptions during his four-season career.

Defensive coordinator d*ck LeBeau, who was retained by new Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, uses the strong safety in a variety of positions, sometimes lining Polamalu up as an outside linebacker in the pass rush, on the inside on running plays or deep in a formation.

"Troy Polamalu is a very special football player who has been a key ingredient to our success over the past few seasons," Steelers president Art Rooney II said. "We are excited to know he will be a Steeler for many seasons to come."

Polamalu's contract was announced minutes before the Steelers officially opened their first training camp under Tomlin with conditioning tests, a much-dreaded drill that former coach Bill Cowher previously held on the second day of camp.

Steelers, top pick Timmons agree to terms

PITTSBURGH (July 22, 2007) -- Outside linebacker Lawrence Timmons, the No. 15 pick in the NFL draft, agreed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a five-year contract.

Timmons became only the third first-round pick in the April draft to reach terms and the first in the upper half of the draft. Previously, the only first-rounders under contract were 49ers offensive tackle Joe Starkey (No. 28) and Bears tight end Greg Olsen (No. 31).

The deal was reached less than 24 hours before the Steelers become the first NFL team to open training camp with its full squad and fulfilled first-year coach Mike Tomlin's goal of having every player signed by the reporting deadline.

"It is important because the train starts moving at 4 p.m. Monday," Tomlin said. "It is tough to get on a moving train if you haven't tried before."

The Steelers will be pleased enough merely to get Timmons onto the practice field. Timmons, relatively inexperienced for a first-round pick after starting only one season at Florida State, injured a groin on the first day of the Steelers' initial minicamp in April and missed the rest of their offseason workouts.

Losing that practice time was a setback to Timmons, but Tomlin said he is healthy now.

The Steelers have long had a policy of wanting to get their first-rounder signed by the first day of camp, and might have decided to give Timmons a five-year contract rather than the six-year deal allowed under NFL rules to make sure he didn't hold out.

The 6-foot, 234-pound Timmons wasn't seen as a first-round pick until last season, when he replaced former star Ernie Sims -- a Lions 2006 first-rounder -- at strong side linebacker to make 126 tackles, 22½ for losses, eight sacks and one interception. He also had two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries and blocked three punts on special teams during his college career.

With former Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter now with Miami, Timmons figures to play much sooner in Pittsburgh than he would have previously. He will get a chance to push new starting right outside linebacker James Harrison, an undrafted former backup. He might get practice time at inside linebacker since Tomlin likes his players to play multiple positions.

The Steelers will have two new pass rushers in camp, with second-round linebacker LaMarr Woodley of Michigan also getting a shot to play immediately. Pittsburgh has three returning linebacker starters in its 3-4 system in outside linebacker Clark Haggans and inside linebackers Larry Foote and James Farrior, but wants to improve a pass rush that had only 39 sacks last season.

Because the Steelers added the two rookie pass rushers, they are considering removing Haggans during passing downs to play one of them.

The Steelers' only other previously unsigned pick, cornerback William Gay of Louisville, signed a three-year contract. He was the second of their two picks in the fifth round.
