Facing a Friday deadline to accept the Red Sox's contract offer, Jason Varitek is considering sitting out the 2009 season or even retiring, according to the Boston Globe.

Varitek is no doubt unhappy about the fact that he'll have to take a big paycut to stay in Boston, but he's not going to be any more desirable next offseason and retirement seems like an empty threat. With the Red Sox's deadline approaching, the newspaper reports that the two sides "seem caught in a stare down that could produce an unhappy ending for both the player and club."

good retire, I'm so sick of varitek, guy is absolutely useless hitting, and sucks at throwing people out. We shouldnt keep him just because he calls good games. He gets credit for good games, but on bad games, pitchers get sh*t. Get Varitek outta here and bring in Mauer when he's a FA

What is undeniable, and startling, is that the Red Sox were more productive without Ramirez than with him. They averaged almost a run more per game (5.79 to 4.94) after his departure, even though Ortiz was subpar because of injury and outfielder J.D. Drew, who had carried the club in June, also was hurt. They went on an 18-9 tear in August and played .643 ball without Ramirez.
:wow:

Gonna be a good season :applause:

Youkilis: Not WBC's fault

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Kevin Youkilis made sure to emphasize, when talking about his injured ankle today, that this is not something that can be attributed to the World Baseball Classic. In fact, Youkilis has felt soreness in the ankle for weeks at this point.

Youkilis's agent, Joe Bick, confirmed that the first baseman has been battling tenderness in his ankle for "a couple weeks."

"It was very disappointing for me to come home, but this was something that didn't just start a couple days ago," Youkilis said. "This was something that's been going on for a couple weeks now. It was nothing. I've been hearing that this is the WBC's fault, this is a stupid idea this thing. It's not. It's a great thing. We had fun. It was a blast. It was an honor to represent your country. The misconception is that I didn't get hurt just playing in the WBC."

Youkilis said the injury is a continuation of the plantar fasciitis that he's had in the past, notably in 2006, and that the tightness had been there ever since the beginning of spring training. He also said that if he needed to play right now, he could. But there is no reason for him to do so.

"I need time to recuperate, because if I don't stay in this boot for three days this will linger the whole season for me and this is something I had to do," he said. "I had to come home. It was not easy for me to walk away from playing baseball ever, especially with Team USA. But this was something that was in the best interests of the Red Sox and the best interests of myself."

There isn't much to do, other than the normal rehab. Youkilis did say the team might try orthotics in an attempt to lessen the tightness and soreness in that foot and ankle during the season. Right now the plan is to get rid of the swelling and tendinitis over the next few days. It is expected that Youkilis will be in a boot for two to three days, then will hit for a couple days before getting back into games.

General manager Theo Epstein said, "It was the right thing to do to shut him down for a few days, but it's nothing serious, nothing we're overly concerned with at all."

There apparently was no consideration to have Youkilis not participate in the WBC, mostly because he wasn't all that forthcoming about the injury to the team's trainers.

"If you ask any of the trainers I'm probably one of the last guys to talk about if something's bothering me," Youkilis said. "I'm probably not as smart with my injuries as most guys. ... But I really didn't tell anybody because I didn't think it was that big of a deal -- until now."

But, if you can't blame the WBC, there is someone you can blame.

"Dog-piling and running around, having so much fun doing that, I think that was probably not the brightest idea," Youkilis said. "But you know when you have your adrenaline up you can do a lot of things. Not a great decision on my part to participate in dog-piling, running around and jumping around. Probably didn't help it at all. But like I said, it had nothing to do with all of that. Derek Jeter kind of grabbed at my ankle, and twisted it."

I hate Red Sox fans but I saw one of the classiest things I have seen in awhile.
There is is a memorial in front of Angels Stadium filled with flowers/cards/pictures/ for Adenhart.
After the game tonight a Boston fan put his official jersey in the pile. I got teary-eyed. That's the spirit of a great human being. :applause:

Sox's Lowrie could miss rest of year
Shortstop to meet with specialist to see if surgery is needed

Jed Lowrie will visit a wrist specialist on Saturday and could be sidelined for the season.

According to published reports, Lowrie will be examined by Dr. Donald Sheridan in Arizona to determine the best course of action to address the Red Sox shortstop's ailing left wrist.

One option will be for Lowrie, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, to continue to rehab the wrist after receiving two cortisone shots earlier this week. Two other options require surgery. One procedure would involve reattaching the fractured bone, the ulnar styloid. The other would require removing the bone, which would end Lowrie's season.

"The last thing I want is surgery," Lowrie said. "But if it's something that will make this better and be the long-term solution, I'll do it."

Lowrie played through pain throughout much of last season after first hurting his left wrist in May. He's hoping his visit with Sheridan will help him to finally put the injury in the past.

"It's about me finding out what I need to do and embarking on that to get myself healthy," said Lowrie. "I'm optimistic about it. I'm optimistic to get as much info as I can and go forward from there."

Lowrie remains optimistic that his current treatment plan, rather than surgery, will be enough to get him back on the field.

"I'm hoping I go to Sheridan and he tells me what we're doing right now is what needs to be done," Lowrie said. "That would be ideal -- with rest and rehab, I'll feel good and it will be a long-term solution."

Lowrie's sucked this year, i could care less if he come back. Nick Green is doing soo much beter than him. I have confidence in Lugo, but we need to get rid of Lopez. I wouldnt mind Tulowitzki either though...

Im playing the show, a game but still a simulator. And to think what our record would be or even how much better our offense is WHEN Ortiz hits homers from the 3 spot. I mean damn Bay can't be the only guy to score Pedroia.

Trade in due time if he continues?
