J.R. Smith could sign with the Knicks Friday, according to his father.

According to an NBA source, the Knicks and Smith were talking contract terms tonight after none of the current offers on the table from other teams bowled Smith over.

But Earll Smith, J.R. Smith’s father, told The Post Smith could still change his mind if a new whopping offer comes down the pike Friday when the Dwight Howard situation is resolved. That seems unlikely at this point.

“I’m diehard Knick fan, I want to see my son get justice,’’ Earl Smith told The Post tonight. "We know the Knicks only have so much money because of early bird rights. But if some team offers a crazy amount of money, like $10 million per, he’ll probably go there. We’ll see what happens. He’s not signing yet (tonight).’’

Two of his suitors, Houston and Dallas, were waiting to see if they landed Howard before making an offer for Smith Friday that could be a four-year deal.

The Knicks’ best offer under the new CBA is expected to be 4 years, $24.7 million. It hasn’t exactly been determined until league audit is official next week. But the Knicks have his early-bird rights and can pay him starting at the league’s average salary with 7.5 percent raises. So the deal is expected to start at $5.57 million.

The Knicks have talked to Smith about a two-year package (worth roughly $11.5M). After the two years are up, Smith could then re-sign with the Knicks with full Bird rights and get a maximum contract. It is unclear which package Smith prefers.

That sort of two-year structure would surely keep Smith motivated and also keep the Knicks clear of contracts for the summer of 2015 when they may have to start over again under the salary cap.

Milwaukee had Smith high on its list but today instead signed shooting guard O.J. Mayo and had made a 3-year, $10M offer to swingman Kyle Korver. It is believed the Bucks made an offer to Smith that didn't trump the Knicks bid by enough.

Chris Copeland appears on the way out and Pablo Prigioni on the way back.

Things were heating up on the Copeland hunt yesterday as he was on the verge of signing an offer sheet that would likely spell the end of his brief but entertaining Knick career.

According to sources, Copeland has three offer sheets to choose from — the Pacers, the Lakers and an unknown team, possibly Cleveland.

As The Post reported, Mike D’Antoni was the first to call Copeland’s agent, John Spencer, when free agency began.

The Knicks have already offered a portion of their $3.18 mini mid-level exception to Prigioni. According to a person close to Prigioni, he received a two-year deal in the $2.3 million range. That would be $1.15 million of the exception and would likely not leave enough to match Copeland’s offer sheet.

“The Knicks loved Pablo,’’ one person familiar with their thinking said.

The Pacers, who eliminated the Knicks in six games, were looking to sign Copeland to an offer sheet with a portion of their mid-level exception of $5 million. The Knicks would technically have three days to match, but wouldn’t be able to under new collective bargaining agreement rules.

Apparently, Pacers coach Frank Vogel also thought the Knicks 29-year-old rookie should’ve played more in the second round. Knicks coach Mike Woodson took some heat for not playing Copeland more in the playoffs as he was never a big fan. The former Belgian Leaguer got two third-place votes for Rookie of the Year despite being in Woodson’s doghouse at times.

Copeland played in just three of the six games in the Boston series. He played in all six contests of the Indiana series, but some just in garbage time.

A friend of Copeland’s said last week he would have a tough time playing for the Pacers because they just knocked the Knicks out of the playoffs.

J.R. Smith has accepted the terms of a new 4-year, $24.7 million contract this morning, his agent Leon Rose told The Post.

Smith, who was seeking a significantly higher offer elsewhere, will make roughly $6 million per year, starting at the league's average salary of $5.75M. It was the most the Knicks can offer under the early-bird rights rules since Smith played only two seasons for the Knicks. Smith will have a player opt-out after the third year.

It is unclear what role Smith will play this season but the Sixth Man of the Year sat down with coach Mike Woodson over the weekend at Amare's Stoudemire's wedding bash to talk about it. Smith could conceivably start next season - something he wished for last year.

Earl Smith, his father, told The Post last night that his son still could receive a higher offer elsewhere, but his agent felt the market wasn't there for Smith to receive what he was looking for - a $10 million per year offer. Smith would've left the Knicks if he received either a 3-year, $30 million offer or a four-year, $36M offer but his market value wasn't that high after a poor playoff in which he was suspended one game for elbowing Jason Terry and shot 33 percent.

The Knicks conceivably could have a starting lineup of Raymond Felton, Smith, Iman Shumpert, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler.

^Word. Cope take that the rest of the money from that mle and sign a 2-4yr deal with an option would be love. Plus the chance to compete for a championship (or division title ) is better than makin money on a wack a.ss team, plus how u gonna beat the NYC atmosphere.
Also he can play 2-5 if he comes back which would fill a lot of our needs cause he's versatile on offense and is a willing defender
