Sing it with me:

Ain't no angst like Knicks fan angst 'cause Knicks fan angst . . . is actually not necessary on this one.

Before you light the torches and scream "shill!", take a breath and read.

The trade, once it is completed, will send Marcus Camby and Steve Novak, plus a 2016 first round pick, a couple of future second rounders and, to make the math work, a sign-and-trade of a peripheral free agent (Quentin Richardson? Earl Barron?) to the Raptors for Bargnani.

By word count, it appears the Knicks gave up a lot for the oft-injured, oft-maligned former first overall pick. But let's water it down to this: the Knicks traded their 2016 first round pick, which the Nuggets already had the rights to swap (via Melo trade), for Bargnani. And by doing so, they saved close to $4 million in salary cap space for the 2015 free agency period, which will otherwise be known as the Knicks Summer of the Reset Button.

Novak (3 years, $11.3M left) saw his effectiveness-and, subsequently, his minutes-diminish.

Camby is 39 and will be 41 when his deal ends (2 years, $8.6M left). Injuries and conditioning issues hve plagued him.

Bargnani, who the last two seasons has endured injuries, will cost the Knicks $10.75 million this season and, potentially, $11.5 million in 2014-15. I say potentially for two reasons: 1. He has an ETO and, therefore, could opt out to become a free agent (highly unlikely he'd leave $11.5M on the table); 2. He could be a valuable expiring contract to deal next summer.

So we will indulge in the basketball aspect. Bargnani's impact will be in pulling opposing bigs (attn: Roy Hibbert) out of the painted area with his perimeter shooting, which would allow Carmelo and Amar'e to work. However, before we think he could potentially replace Tyson Chandler, we remind you that defense and rebounding are important.

Let's get to why you have angst: the 2016 first round pick. Yes, another first rounder goes out the door. Fans love draft picks. They're your currency of hope. The Nuggets have the right to swap, so even if the Knicks fell into the lottery, it wouldn't be their pick. But even a late first round is better than no first round.

They do have three years to get one back, if they so desire, so it's not worth gritting your teeth and clentching your fists. In fact, this deal isn't worth your emotion because, on the surface, it seems more like a bookkeeping move than anything else.

But the summer has only just begun. Let's see where this leads

The New York Knicks are close to finalizing a trade for power forward Andrea Bargnani that would send Steve Novak and Marcus Camby to the Toronto Raptors, a league source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.

Sources say in order to make the trade work after July 10 -- when the league's annual moratorium is lifted -- the Knicks will have to sign-and-trade at least one player they had at the end of the season as part of the deal.

Earl Barron and Quentin Richardson are possibilities, according to sources.

Kenyon Martin, however, is not going to sign off on being signed-and-traded to Toronto, sources say.

Camby's agent, Rick Kaplan, said the trade is "going to happen."

The New York Times earlier reported the development, and the newspaper also mentioned the trade would involve the Knicks giving up their first-round pick in 2016.

Bargnani is represented by Leon Rose, whose clients include the Knicks' Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith.

In addition, Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald is the former GM of the Raptors, the team that drafted Camby with the second overall pick in 1996.

Camby did not sound enthused about potentially heading back to Toronto.

"It's unfortunate that I wasn't given a meaningful opportunity to contribute last season in New York. I was really looking forward to the upcoming year as a chance to show the organization what they missed out on last year, and pushing our team towards the Finals," he said in a statement through his agent.

"I have nothing but positive things to say about the city of Toronto and its great fans, having been drafted by the Raptors 17 years ago. Given that my goal at this point in my career is to have a shot at a championship, however, I'll have to evaluate my options going forward. I've enjoyed a great career and under the right circumstances I hope to continue making an impact in the league."

The trade would appear to put the Knicks -- already over the luxury-tax threshold -- in further short-term financial duress.

Camby and Novak's salaries total about $8.7 million for next season, while Bargnani, 27, is due to make $23 million in the next two seasons. If the trade goes through, he'll also receive a $500,000 bonus as part of a trade kicker.

In addition, Bargnani, the No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft, has missed 98 games in the past two seasons due to injuries. Last season he was sidelined in early March because of an avulsion sprain in his right elbow.

But Bargnani's contract will have expired entering the 2014-15 season, giving the Knicks the prospect of cap flexibility in 2015, when the salaries of Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler come off the books.

Trading for Bargnani is also viewed as potential insurance if Smith decides to bolt in free agency. A few teams, including the Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns, are preparing to make higher offers than the Knicks to sign the Sixth Man Award winner. The Knicks can only offer $5.58 million with "early Bird rights" but they still feel like they have the upper hand. In fact, Smith has agreed, along with his family, to first meet with Knicks coach Mike Woodson and the team's front office on Sunday night to discuss his future in New York.

It's unclear how Bargnani's role would affect Stoudemire's. But the move would appear to represent the Knicks' focus on contending for an NBA championship by 2015 and putting pressure on the Brooklyn Nets after their Atlantic Division rival's additions of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry.

A league source said the Knicks could also pursue point guard Aaron Brooks, who was recently waived by the Houston Rockets. Rose, who also represents Brooks, told ESPNNewYork.com earlier this month that Brooks would be a "good fit" in New York with his transition game and 3-point shooting, which figure to be two keys in the Knicks' offense next season.

The Knicks have been interested in Brooks in the past, and securing a backup point guard this offseason is a priority. They would also like to re-sign Pablo Prigioni, but he has given them no indications whether he'll return to New York or head back to Spain, where he played professionally for many years.

Because what the Knicks really need is another volume shooter. What they lack is a guy who needs the ball in his hands and shoots a low percentage on the shots he creates, and then is disinterested on defense.

Nonetheless the Knicks have interest in Monta Ellis, according to Ken Berger of CBSSports.com. The good news for Knicks fans is this likely does not happen.

A union of Ellis and the Knicks is viewed as a long shot, as the Knicks have only the $3.2 million taxpayer mid-level exception available. Ellis just opted out of a deal that would have paid him $11 million next season in Milwaukee.

But Ellis, 27, and his Washington, D.C.-based agent, Jeff Fried, are known to be willing to compromise in order to sign with a contending team. And the Knicks, who face the free-agent loss of sixth man of the year J.R. Smith, would provide ample opportunity for Ellis to showcase his scoring prowess deep into the playoffs.

Ellis averaged 19.2 points a game last season but on 41.6 percent shooting in Milwaukee. Paired with Brandon Jennings, then later in the season J.J. Red!ck, the Bucks backcourt was… interesting. Among the teams reportedly interested are Dallas and Atlanta (the Hawks seem an odd fit with their front office and coach, but it’s out there).

Ellis is a free agent likely in for a rude awakening about what the market will offer him. He reportedly turned down a two year, $24 million extension to get out of Milwaukee and he is not going to get anything like that on the open market. Teams are looking for efficient scorers and that is not Ellis.

Even so, the Knicks $3.2 million is low (and the reportedly want to spend part of that on Chris Copeland and Pablo Prigioni). This is a deal that just will not work out, which is good for the Knicks because Ellis is a bad fit.

i'm looking at the Ellis thing as a backup plan in case JR doesn't re-sign since they pretty much do the same thing. makes no sense to go after one when you have the other
