What J.R. Smith admitted "scared" him about #Knicks free agency. And it has nothing to do with his role. More:

J.R. Smith came to the Knicks to play with Carmelo Anthony, but this summer he was afraid of losing his favorite teammate to free agency.

“We were so nervous and scared that we weren’t going to be on the same team anymore," Smith said of Steve Novak.

Yes, Steve Novak.

"People asked me who I texted the most this summer," Novak told me recently. "When I tell them J.R., they're like, 'Yeah, right.' But it's true. We talked all the time. He's a great guy."

This is some Felix and Oscar stuff, which is why I've gotten to call them The Odd Couple on MSG Network.

And the two have a genuine appreciation of each other, and their games.

"We got so close in that little time that I got here at the end of the season last year, we had a little joke going," Smith told MSG's Tina Cervasio.

"Whenever he’s open, I’m on the bench or wherever I’m at yelling ‘Find him! Find him! Find him!’ Before you know it, they’re finding him and he’s hitting six or seven threes a game. I think it helped his confidence."

Novak marveled at Smith's unselfishness, especially considering the reputation that preceded him.

"He draws defenses so a lot of attention so when teams do decide to go double, or he makes someone help, he passes the ball so well to me," Novak told Cervasio. "I think the fact that we’re both perimeter threats makes us hard to guard on the floor at the same time . . . I think we definitely compliment each other well.”

They couldn't be more opposite off the court; modest family man from Wisconsin meets fun-loving tattooed baller from New Jersey. It's easily a better sitcom format than Two Broke Girls.

But despite the amusing diametrics, they formed a bond that went beyond stereotypes.

"I don’t think he understood that I was like that before I got there," Smith said. "I didn’t think people knew how close we were going to get. But just the relationship we had, Steve is so . . . he likes to talk, I like to talk, I mean, it makes it great for us. Especially as shooters. We do shooting drills every day after practice. It helps us on the team aspect, too.”

It creates a dynamic 1-2 scoring punch of the bench, as well. Smith may not be completely satisfied with being a reserve, but he is happy to be reunited with his favorite wingman.

they butted heads but who knows, maybe they can get past that...i mean, if you think about it ever since Josh came into the league he was always one of the oldest dudes in that locker room so no REAL veteran leadership (or at least somebody that can keep dudes focused) was around and of course u might get young dudes wilding the fu*k out

Did someone kidnap Steve Novak on the bus ride to Hartford Saturday? In the preseason game against the Celtics at XL Center, Novak was 1-of-6 from 3-point land and 3-of-5 on 2-pointers. That’s a statistical oddity that deserves an investigation.

Coach Mike Woodson explained it yesterday, saying the 3-point specialist has added a dimension to his game — creating shots off the dribble. Novak was a catch-and-shoot machine from 3-point territory last season, leading the NBA in 3-point percentage (47.8). But that became the only way he could score.

“In the last game, he made a couple of shots off the dribble,’’ Woodson said. “That’s something we didn’t see [last season]. That’s something we talked about in the summer about developing. All it is, is two, three escape dribbles to get your shot. He’s been working on that. The next step is get him to take it all the way to the hole and make him get knocked on his [butt] and get to the free throw line.’’

Well, that may not happen anytime soon. Novak, who was 7-of-7 from 3-point range during he preseason opener in Washington, is as good at penetrating to the bucket as Alex Rodriguez is at avoiding attention.

“I don’t think it’s something you’ll see me do as my go-to stuff, but it’s just as good a weapon,’’ Novak said of creating his shot off dribble penetration.. “Put it on the floor, one, two dribbles. Nothing major.’’

It could be a major issue come playoff time. Last season, Miami shut down Novak, as the Heat never left him open at the 3-point stripe. Novak became a non-factor, hitting only four 3-pointers in the five-game series.

Novak is acutely aware of the criticism he received against Miami.

“There’s a lot of talk about the Miami series,’’ Novak said. “Obviously we wanted to play better. But we’re moving on. We’re improving from it, working harder this summer. It keeps coming up. There’s no doubt it left a bitter taste in our mouth. We’ll be better for it.’’

* While Jeremy Lin is on the cover of GQ, Carmelo Anthony is on the cover of November’s Slam Magazine and now ESPN The Magazine’s NBA preview issue. Anthony probably wasn’t thrilled to hear of Lin’s latest magazine cover, as Anthony’s jealousy of Lin last season has been well-documented. In the preview issue, the dynamic is rehashed, with one new detail: Lin warned Anthony he wouldn’t get the ball if he weren’t open.

“Jeremy is a tough guy,” an anonymous source said. “He told Carmelo under no uncertain terms, ‘I’m not going to give you the ball unless you create space and run the plays.’ None of the other guys had a problem with it. Tyson [Chandler] didn’t, Amar’e [Stoudemire] didn’t. They knew they had a better chance with the ball in Lin’s hands in the last few minutes.” ... As expected, the Knicks exercised their third-year option on Iman Shumpert’s rookie contract. Shumpert was named to the NBA All-Rookie first team last season.

Now for some good news on the Knicks’ bleak injury front:

Ronnie Brewer, their projected starting shooting guard, may practice today for the first time as a Knick and could make his club debut on their upcoming Montreal-Albany-Syracuse preseason road trip.

On Media Day, Carmelo Anthony said the 27-year-old Brewer’s August signing was “the most underrated’’ acquisition of their offseason. The former Bulls shooting guard, who had knee surgery to repair his meniscus cartilage in early September, is known for his ability to play defense — which is very intriguing to Knicks coach Mike Woodson.
IN ‘D’ MOOD: Ronnie Brewer, who defended against LeBron James as a Bull two seasons ago, and wore a Knicks uniform during Media Day, is expected to practice today and may make his preseason debut with the Knicks on Friday against the Raptors in Montreal.

IN ‘D’ MOOD: Ronnie Brewer, who defended against LeBron James as a Bull two seasons ago, and wore a Knicks uniform during Media Day, is expected to practice today and may make his preseason debut with the Knicks on Friday against the Raptors in Montreal.

Brewer, selected 14th out of Arkansas in the 2006 draft by Utah, can also bang in a perimeter shot. The thrifty Bulls let the heady six-year veteran walk this summer after he grew as a player under defensive genius Tom Thibodeau.

Woodson said Brewer is expected to practice either today or tomorrow and wouldn’t completely rule him out for Friday’s game in Montreal, where the Knicks face the Raptors in their third preseason game. The next two contests — Saturday in Albany against the Celtics and Monday in Syracuse against the Sixers — are definitely in play.

“If that could happen, it’s a major plus,’’ said Woodson, who views Brewer as their starter at least until Iman Shumpert returns in December or January.

With Amar’e Stoudemire to make his preseason debut in Montreal, it’s possible the Knicks’ projected starting five will be intact in Canada.

Asked if he preferred Brewer’s offense or defense, Woodson said, “I like them both. I think he can defend. That’s one of the reasons we brought him here. He knows how to play. He’s just a basketball player.’’

Woodson has scrambled to find a starting shooting guard in the wake of injuries. He refuses to start J.R. Smith under any circumstances — which has deeply disappointed the mercurial guard. In the first two preseason games, Woodson has started Mychel Thompson, who may not make the team, and James White, the free agent signee who recently played in Italy. Ultimately, it is Brewer’s starting job.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Knicks’ injury report regarding their backup big men is not encouraging. Marcus Camby’s seven-to-10-day timetable has expired and he didn’t practice yesterday, nor is he a sure thing for next week, because of his left calf strain.

Camby, the Knicks’ backup center, is in his second stint at age 38. His first stint also was marked by injuries.

“I can’t say he’s getting close,’’ Woodson said. “He’s feeling better, put it that way. I’ll talk to [trainer] Roger [Hinds] and the training staff and see if there’s a chance of him coming back next week. I don’t know yet.”’’

Camby lasted just three days of camp before going down.

“I’m not concerned,’’ Woodson said. “He’s got an injury and we’re treating it. Eventually he’ll be back on the floor.’’

The news also wasn’t good for backup power forward Rasheed Wallace, who has yet to scrimmage through the first two weeks of training camp as he remains on the sidelines, working on his conditioning.

As each day passes, there’s more mystery about whether Woodson will keep Wallace on the final 15-man roster.

“He’s got to get ready for practice first, then we’ll talk about scrimmaging,’’ Woodson said.

Wallace has been working with strength coach Dave Hancock and a.ssistant LaSalle Thompson in physical low-post drills, sprinkled with running laps after each shot. Wallace has also been seen boxing and jumping rope.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers, who coached Wallace two years ago in Boston, said over the weekend he felt Wallace was right to retire two years ago unless he had made a larger commitment to getting in shape.
