When Prigioni does sign, will he try to recruit a fellow Argentine to join him? Carlos Delfino remains an unsigned free agent and is disappointed with his former team, the Milwaukee Bucks, for not reaching out to re-sign him. The Knicks have a need for another wing player, and someone who could handle a starters role at shooting guard in the absence of Iman Shumpert. Would Delfino come to New York for the veterans minimum? He could get more (and is worth more) but Knicks certainly have the tough, versatile Delfino on the radar.

The New York Knicks are in the final stages of contract negotiations with Mike Woodson and are expected to make him their coach in the coming days, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told ESPNNewYork.com.

The deal could be announced as soon as the end of this week, according to the source.

"They're just waiting on paperwork," the source said.

"The job's his," a second source familiar with negotiations said. "It's just a matter of time."

The two sides are working on a multiyear deal, a team source confirmed.

Woodson took over as coach on an interim basis when Mike D'Antoni stepped down March 14. Under Woodson, the Knicks finished the regular season 18-6 and in seventh place in the Eastern Conference. He coached the team to a win in Game 4 of its first-round playoff series against the Miami Heat, which snapped the franchise's NBA-record 13-game postseason losing streak.

Woodson has received the support of many Knicks players, among them Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin.

Anthony has shown the strongest support for the 54-year-old Woodson.

"I'm hopeful he's back," Anthony said earlier this month. "There's no need to try to change it up now. I'm a big believer in sticking with what you have."

When D'Antoni first stepped down, Phil Jackson, the former Knicks player and Bulls and Lakers coach, and Kentucky coach John Calipari were mentioned as potential replacements.

But there was no indication that the 66-year-old Jackson would come out of retirement -- one team source said that the Knicks did not reach out to Jackson -- and Calipari repeatedly has denied interest in leaving Kentucky. New York was hesitant to reach out to Jackson because of his age and the hefty contract offer that it would likely take to entice him to take the job.

Woodson is longtime friends with Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald. Woodson and Grunwald played college basketball together at Indiana.

Many believe Woodson's candidacy for the full-time job greatly improved when the Knicks removed the interim tag from Grunwald's title late in the regular season. But Grunwald said at the time that hiring the team's next coach would be an "organizational" decision, not his alone. He was, however, highly complimentary of Woodson.

"Woody's done a fantastic job. I can't give him enough credit for the job he's done since he's been here," Grunwald said in late April. "Normal coaching changes don't result in such a dramatic improvement in a team's performance so I think that speaks very well of him."

Woodson, who coached the Atlanta Hawks to the playoffs in three of his six seasons with the club, declined comment through a team spokesman. A team spokesman also declined comment when asked about the state of negotiations between Woodson and the Knicks.

Earlier this month, Woodson split with his agent, Keith Glass.

Glass is the son of Joe Glass, who represented former Knicks coach Larry Brown during his stormy one-season tenure in New York. Brown, who signed a five-year, $50 million deal with the Knicks, reached an $18.5 million settlement with the club after being fired.

"Anthony said he's admired newest Knick PG Pablo Prigioni from afar and got to speak with him after Argentina game. Melo said his USA teammates also think he can play. “I’ve always liked him even before we signed him,’’ Anthony said. “Playing against him in international basketball. I got to talk to him after the game (Sunday). I told him be ready for training camp, be ready for the #Knicks. We had some laughs and jokes after the game.’’ "

By committing to a "win now" mentality, the Knicks are putting their money where their mouth is, signing veteran leaders and role players to surround their stars.

In doing so, New York has had to spend more money this offseason, making the necessary sacrifices to lure in proven talents.

As the team still has at least one (two if the team chooses not to retain Chris Copeland) spot to fill on their fifteen man roster, Knicks General Manager Glen Grunwald may be, at this point, looking for a couple diamonds in the rough.

Grunwald was present at the Basketball City facility yesterday in New York City for the "RBA Sports Summer Showcase." His attendance came just a day after the Knicks' G.M. met with RBA Sports client Tony Taylor Jr. and gave him a tour of the team's training facilities in Westchester.

Taylor Jr. hit the hardwood yesterday ready to prove himself to an array of NBA team representatives. The Nets and Grizzlies were also amongst the teams present at the workout.

A George Washington University alum, Taylor Jr. demonstrated some of the great playmaking ability many around him rave about. It's easy to see the young point guard is a smart player with stellar instincts. He looks for his teammates and knows how to find them in the right spots.

Though Taylor Jr. was clearly the best floor general at the workout, what he wasn't quite able to show off was his strength. Having been compared to the likes of Chauncey Billups and Jeremy Lin, one would have expected the Sleepy Hollow native to penetrate to the basket a little more often.

While he did indeed have a strong showing, the workout wasn't all about Taylor Jr. Many other notable NBA prospects thrived despite the immense amount of pressure.

Among those to impress was Kayode Ayeni. Ayeni displayed a strong jump shot, making it rain from both corners during scrimmages. Despite having spent training camp last year with the Erie Bayhawks, a Knicks D-League affiliate, Ayeni's physical frame is perplexing. He's listed as a 6'6 forward who weighs 180 pounds. If he were able to bulk up just a bit, his consistent shooting could earn him an opportunity.

Rashad Bishop was another wing who had a strong showing during scrimmages as well. He too displayed a consistent jumper, connecting on a bevy of passes from Taylor Jr. Unlike Ayeni, Bishop is 220 pounds and therefore was able to hold his own on the defensive end as well. The forward played in Brazil last season.

Past NBA D-League participant Vernon Goodridge was among the better big men part of yesterday's workout. The 6'10 forward rebounded the ball well and displayed some high-flying athleticism as he dunked home quite a few put-back buckets. Having said that, Goodridge failed to really use his strength to his advantage. The big man could have essentially dominated the workout, had he used his frame to muscle his way around and get inside more often.

All the mentioned players did a decent job of giving the NBA representatives a taste of what they could do, but perhaps the most (pleasantly) surprising display came from 28 year old Brian Kortovich. A 6'0, 180 pound guard, Kortovich may not look like your typical NBA player at first glance. But the fact is the Manhattan College alum can shoot with the best of the them.

Kortovich was aggressive in his shot selection. He wasn't afraid to take a number of bold shots, but never seemed to fail at knocking them down either. One of the best shooters in the entire workout, Kortovich even began to outplay Taylor Jr. during the early goings of the scrimmages. The guard with a sweet shooting stroke played in Israel last season, but has been in training camp with the Knicks and Nets over the last three years as well.

There was certainly enough talent to observe and take note of during yesterday's "RBA Sports' Summer Showcase," so it's entirely possible Grunwald and the Knicks may end up giving a couple of these guys a shot during training camp. More to come as it develops.

LONDON — Pablo Prigioni a.ssured Knicks fans they have nothing to worry about at the point-guard position without Jeremy Lin.

Prigioni, starting point guard for Argentina’s medal-contending Olympic squad, said he is more of a pass-first point guard than Lin, and the club will be solid with a three-headed platoon of Raymond Felton, Jason Kidd and himself.

“I think we have at that position everything, Prigioni said Saturday in an interview at a remote high school in East London. “Raymond can score more. Jason and [I] can run the team. I feel we have many options at that position. Fans will be happy and enjoy our game.’

“Jeremy is more a scorer. He likes to shoot more. I saw him play 10 games. I’m not this kind of player. I like the team to play good, pass the ball, find open shots. I like to play smart — if someone’s hot, pass the ball to him.’’

Prigioni, 35, confirmed the Knicks pursued him for four years. In the past, he elected to stay in the Spanish League, where he has been a stalwart since 1999-2000 and was once Jose Calderon’s backup.

“It’s more important to me the people from New York showed me they wanted me to go and play and really feel I can help the team — 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes,’’ Prigioni said. “Doesn’t matter. They’re very interested. Not only this year, but the last four years they followed me. In the past it wasn’t a good situation to go. This year was better. I finished my contract and they talked to me at the right time. They are pretty sure I can help the team.’’

Prigioni got a big endorsement Saturday from Argentine teammate Manu Ginobili.

“He’s been one of the best point guards in Europe for many years,’’ Ginobili said. “He’s a great point guard, but many times it’s opportunity. I have complete confidence in him. He’s a great player, great character. Not shy of taking a tough position and making a big shot.’’

Prigioni signed a one-year deal for the minimum of $473,000, turning down two years so he can prove himself.

“Before, he was thinking about his financial status,’’ Ginobili said. “Now he thought, ‘I have a great opportunity in New York and want to take it.’ I’ve talked to him a lot about not letting opportunities get away. Then you’re 45, retired and may think, ‘What if?’ ’’

Prigioni, whose Argentine team will face Team USA Aug. 6, thinks he can be a perfect feeder for Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire. He is known for his pick-and-roll play.

“For me it’s great, the way how I play,’’ Prigioni said. “It’s great to have wonderful player like that and I like to play for my teammates and try to give the ball at the right moment and exploit his talents. That’s how I think as a point guard. I don’t want to score 30 points. I want to play for my teammates.’’

As reported in The Post, Prigioni visited the Knicks in mid-June.

“They invite me to go there a couple of days wanted to watch my body and the medical people check how I am,’’ Prigioni said. “They told me exactly what they want from me.’’

Anthony was asked two days ago about playing in London with the Knicks and he said he would “love to come back.’’ The Knicks will. A source said the Knicks-Pistons game Jan. 17 will be staged in London, though the league hasn’t announced it.
