LAS VEGAS — James White isn’t trying to win the NBA Slam-Dunk contest as much as he’s trying to win playing time as a Knicks swingman. Even more minutes might become available if the team doesn’t match Landry Fields’ offer sheet by Saturday.

The former 6-foot-7 Cincinnati high-flier, who has played the last three seasons in Europe, will make his Knicks debut on the summer-league team Saturday when they face the Grizzlies at UNLV’s COX Pavilion.

“I’m going to make the most of it,’’ White said. “Jeremy Lin last year took the opportunity and made the most of it. It comes with hard work.’’

White, the first pick of the second round in 2006, has played 10 career NBA games with the Spurs (six games in 2006-07) and the Rockets (four games in 2008-09) before going overseas to Russia for one season and the Italian League for two.

“I’m a lot better, a lot stronger,’’ White said yesterday before practice. “My all-around game is a lot better than it was from my rookie year. A lot of things of my game get overlooked because everyone looks at YouTube and the dunking. I’m an all-around player. You’ll see in the long run and I’m an all-around good player and not just a dunker.’’

Yeah, but you still have to see that YouTube-video dunk — his head elevating well over the rim, his armpit at rim level.

With eventual starting shooting guard Iman Shumpert probably out until January and the chances of the Knicks matching Fields’ three-year, $19 million Raptors’ offer sheet looking bleak, White may begin as a key piece in the rotation.

“Teams didn’t like what they saw,’’ said coach Mike Woodson, in Las Vegas with the Knicks’ summer-league team. “We brought him in and we liked some of the things he brought to the table. Being able to defend the 2-3 position, he can score a little bit. He’s an athletic player who can get up and down the floor. It’s a matter of him learning the NBA game and finding his niche.”

Woodson seems to have distanced himself from Fields. According to an NBA source, the moment free agency began, the Knicks never made Fields an offer and were more interested in thrusting him into sign-and- trades — with Phoenix, Dallas and others.

Asked about matching Fields’ offer sheet from Toronto, Woodson said, “As it stands right now, it’s about the guys we’ve already made the commitment to and get them where they need to be.’’

General manager Glen Grunwald was more diplomatic.

“We haven’t reached any decision,’’ Grunwald said, adding the club was looking at “what other alternatives might be available to us.’’

The Knicks believe Fields is at his best in the up-tempo attack former coach Mike D’Antoni employed, and his outside shot isn’t getting better. It may be time for Spike Lee to retire Fields’ No. 6 jersey and perhaps don the No. 4 — which White will wear. It’s also the number Nate Robinson, a former dunk champ, wore.

If White sticks with the Knicks, would he vie for the dunk title All-Star weekend?

“That would definitely be great, but that has lot to do with getting playing time and getting the opportunity to be seen,’’ White said. “A lot of people know me as a dunker and a lot of people are asking me to do it. That’s up to the league though.’’

***

The Knicks are expected to receive Lin’s signed offer sheet with the Rockets so they can match it.

***

Woodson will head to the London Olympics to see Tyson Chandler and Carmelo Anthony and will get a special bonus in seeing point guard Pablo Prigioni, who plays for the Argentine Olympic Team and who signed with the Knicks Wednesday.

“I thought he had a great workout for us,’’ Woodson said. “The young man can do a lot of things, running the position. That’s why he’s been one of the top point guards in the European League.’’

***

Woodson said Steve Novak had a stomach procedure after the season and hasn’t been able to practice until now. Woodson said Novak was “sick’’ at season’s end.

main difference unless they ain't update this is, there's no 4th year option

personally if that's the case, i would still match the offer because he would come off the books in 3 years if he's sh*tty, same with Melo, Amar'e, Kidd (if he makes it that long) and Chandler so we can reevaluate who "we" want to bring back

"With this Jeremy Lin contract ballooning at $14.5M in Year 3, the Knicks would have $76.7M in payroll committed to four players (Melo, Amar’e, Tyson and Lin) in 2014-15. Potential for massive luxury tax payments. HOWEVER. All four would be expiring contracts, plus Melo and Amar'e have Early Termination Options for that season. Doubtful they would opt-out at that point of their careers, of course, but the fact that those are each expiring deals means $76 million comes off the cap for 2015. Basically, 2015 free agency bonanza for New York. Who is scheduled to be a free agent that season? Jersey's own Kyrie Irving, for one. "

LAS VEGAS -- The Knicks are “unhappy’’ about a change in the terms of the Rockets’ offer sheet for Jeremy Lin, according to an NBA source, after the offer was bumped to $25 million guaranteed over three years,

Despite their anger, the Knicks still are expected to match it in the next three days. That doesn’t mean they are thrilled with their point-guard prodigy, who has a resume of 26 games with starter’s minutes. As of last night, the Knicks had not received the offer sheet in their hands as the Rockets continued to play games.

Knicks coach Mike Woodson, who gushed three days ago about Lin keeping his starting job when training camp opened, seemed cooler Friday.

DEALIN’ WITH IT: The Knicks are peeved over a revised Rockets offer sheet for point guard Jeremy Lin worth a guaranteed $25 million over three years, but still are expected to match.

When asked about Lin’s impending offer sheet, Woodson said, “I don’t know. Until we get it in hand and Glen [Grunwald, the general manager] is able to evaluate everything, we’ll make a decision.’’

The Knicks are committed to Lin despite signing Jason Kidd and Spanish League veteran Pablo Prigioni as point-guard mentors. But they are furious at the way this played out.

Lin went to Las Vegas yesterday to meet with the Rockets to renegotiate, and sign, the offer sheet and never told the Knicks he was coming to town, The Post has learned. The Knicks held a double-session practice for their summer-league team yesterday.

The Knicks played hardball with Lin from the start, and Lin and his agents went right back at the Knicks. Rockets general manager Daryl Morey stuck it to the Knicks, too, as the ramped-up offer sheet calls for a bump in the third year of the contract to $14.9 million from the previously offered $9.3 million, which will hurt owner James Dolan badly in luxury-tax ramifications.

It begs this question: Will Dolan flip out and tell Grunwald to have Lin pack for Houston?

The back-loaded deal is something of a poison pill, and the Knicks will have salary commitments of about $87 million for eight players in 2014-15. That could be as much as $17 million over the luxury-tax threshold.

The original offer agreed upon last weekend was four years for $28.8 million, but only $19.5 million was guaranteed across the first three years. The final year was not guaranteed. There is no fourth year in the new offer sheet.

According to a source, Morey upped the offer because he heard the Knicks easily would match the old offer and had lost all his point guards. Morey is good friends with former Rockets center Yao Ming, Lin’s mentor.

The Knicks were angry even before yesterday at the Rockets because they did not receive the offer sheet on July 11, as is customary. It took two full days for Lin to sign it.

A source said Lin was too busy Wednesday at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles, where he received the honor of “Breakthrough Athlete’’ and posed for pictures with Jessica Biel and Tim Tebow.

Because the Knicks wouldn’t make him an offer immediately after the start of free agency, Lin withdrew from the U.S. Select Team on July 5 that practiced against the Olympic team.

Woodson said he hoped Lin would attend the Knicks summer league practices to work out with the coaches.

Last month, Woodson said he was excited Lin would be on the Select Team.

Yesterday Woodson said, “You’ve got to live with it, but it’s not the end of the world. Any time you can experience something like that when you’re playing against the best talent in the world, it can’t do nothing but enhance or help your game. You can learn a lot from that experience. He chose not to play. They’re not going to stop because he didn’t play. They’re going to move on.’’

Houston was within its legal rights to alter the offer that was agreed upon July 6. Lin couldn’t sign until July 11. But it is very unusual for terms to be changed so dramatically.

The Knicks have until today to match the offer sheet to Lin’s buddy Landry Fields, who received a back-loaded offer totaling $19 million from the Raptors with $8.5 million for the third year. But now there’s no chance of that, with the third year — that 2014-15 season — becoming a big issue financially for Dolan.

LAS VEGAS — J.R. Smith said he doesn’t care if he starts for the Knicks or comes off the bench as long as he is paired with Jason Kidd.

“Wherever J-Kidd is, that’s where I want to be,” said Smith, who re-signed this week. “Wherever J-Kidd is, that’s where I’m at. That’s where I want to be. I love his game. I don’t know him personally. I love his demeanor toward the game, how serious he takes the game. I heard he’s one of the best teammates. He’s a class act from what I understand.’’

Smith sees Kidd, the veteran point guard who signed a three-year free-agent deal, having a big effect on the Knicks offense.

“It’s open shots all day,” Smith said. “Our job is to make them. With J-Kidd, he’s finding everybody. Not only is he going to help myself and [Steve] Novak, he’s going to help our bigs.”

Smith popped into the Knicks’ summer-league practice to watch his brother, Chris, who was undrafted out of Louisville and is vying for an invite to training camp.

Smith signed a $2.8 million contract with a player option for the season. The Knicks were unable to offer him more than a 20 percent raise. J.R. said he got a bigger offer, but wanted to be on a winner.

“There were options for more money,’’ Smith said. “I’ve got money. I’ve been playing this game since I was 18. Money’s not the option. You can’t be on winning teams forever. I’ve been on losing teams. It’s not a great feeling.’’

Smith said he needs to be better after losing his shot in the playoffs, shooting 31 percent in the first-round exit against the Heat.

“I really didn’t want to go anywhere else,’’ he said. “I was comfortable with my situation. I got a great opportunity from the team to come in and help. I really think I didn’t do that last year. I think I got a lot to prove.”
