it will be totally on him...if he wants to take less money, he's a player that can be making 5-9 mill, doubt he'll take the 3 mill we can give him

So why did Marcus Camby pick the Knicks over the Heat?

There were several reasons. Money, of course, was one of them.

But the reason Camby cited in a recent radio interview is sure to get Knicks fans fired up.

"To be honest, I always prided myself on being a Knick. I remember all of those rivalries and heated skirmishes (with the Heat) we had back in the day so I couldn't see myself being a part of that team," Camby said in an interview Tuesday with the internet radio show Hard2Guard.

"Especially coming back here … into the Garden. I didn't want to be a villain. So this is a great situation for me."

Of course, the fact that the Knicks gave Camby a three-year, $13.2 million deal couldn't have hurt either.

But it's interesting that Camby cited his pride in the Knicks as one reason he declined the invite to join LeBron James' party in South Beach.

Miami made a strong push to acquire the 38-year-old veteran. Camby would have given the Heat the interior toughness that the NBA champs lacked at times last year. But Camby instead chose to return to New York.

"I just felt the situation was right," he said. "... Everything comes full circle."

The Knicks officially announced their acquisition of Camby on Wednesday. New York sent guard Toney Douglas, center Jerome Jordan, forward Josh Harrellson and second-round picks in 2014 and 2015 to Houston to get Camby.

Camby told the radio show that GM Glen Grunwald, a.ssistant GM Allan Houston and head coach Mike Woodson put together a "great" presentation to recruit him to New York.

Camby, a 16-year veteran, said he's perfectly comfortable backing up Tyson Chandler and Amare Stoudemire in a reserve role.

"I'm not trying to come here and step on anyone's toes. I've been a starter every year in my career but I don't have a problem coming in here and playing alongside or backing up Tyson or Amare or any of those guys," said Camby, who played in New York from 1998-2001 and was a key part of the Knicks team that made a run to the 1999 NBA Finals.

"... I feel like I'm still capable of doing a lot of things, even despite my age, and being back home and playing in front of the Garden will definitely add a lot of inspiration."

Click here to listen to the full interview (it lasts for about 10 minutes and starts at the 18:50 mark).

COPELAND IN THE MIX: The Knicks are going to give Chris Copeland a shot.

New York signed the former University of Colorado standout to a non-guaranteed contract and gave him an invite to veteran's camp, according to his agent, John Spencer.

Copeland, a 6-8 power forward, will play with the Knicks' summer league team in Las Vegas and will have a shot to make the team during training camp.

The Newark native won the Belgium Ethias League MVP award while averaging 20.1 points per game while shooting 59.6% from the field during EuroChallenge competition last season.

LAS VEGAS — Coach Mike Woodson rode into Cox Pavilion for the Knicks’ first summer league practice Wednesday, ready to talk about his team, the one that added two veterans and retained two free agents. The focal point, though, for Woodson was Jeremy Lin.

Jeremy Lin averaged 18.5 points and 7.6 a.ssists in 25 games as a starter.
Off the Dribble

Woodson talked as if the Knicks had already matched the four-year, $28.8 million offer sheet Lin agreed to sign with the Houston Rockets.

“Absolutely,” Woodson said when asked whether the Knicks would retain their young point guard. “Jeremy Lin has always been a big part of what we’re trying to do as we move forward.”

Lin is expected to sign the offer sheet as soon as Thursday, and then the Knicks would have to match it by Sunday.

Woodson took it one step further: Lin will be his starting point guard this season.

“You can’t lose your starting job based on injuries,” Woodson said. “Jeremy was our starter before he got hurt. He’s not going to be punished for that.”

Lin, who was waived twice before he became an international sensation last season, averaged 18.5 points and 7.6 a.ssists in 25 games as a starter.

Jason Kidd and Steve Novak have yet to finalize their deals, Woodson said, but the Knicks hope to sign them Thursday. Kidd will back up Lin and could play the shooting guard position at times.

“I’m happy he’s a part of our team,” Woodson said of Kidd. “He gets the most out of the guys around him, and that’s what’s going to be most important.”

Carmelo Anthony agreed.

“This is one of the best opportunities that Jeremy would probably ever have from a standpoint of playing under a guy like Jason,” he said. “I think he should take advantage of this.”

The Knicks will have to make a decision on Landry Fields, who started next to Lin. Fields, a restricted free agent, signed a three-year deal Wednesday with the Toronto Raptors worth $18.7 million. The Knicks have until Saturday to match the offer.

Before free agency, General Manager Glen Grunwald said he wanted to keep Fields. It is now unclear whether the Knicks will.

“I don’t know,” Woodson said of retaining Fields.

The Knicks finalized deals with Marcus Camby, J. R. Smith and James White on Wednesday.

Camby, who played for Knicks from 1998 to 2002, returned in a sign-and-trade deal with the Houston Rockets. He averaged 4.9 points and 9 rebounds last season and will back up Tyson Chandler.

“It’s exciting when you get the chance to bring a former Knick like Marcus Camby back home,” Grunwald said in a statement. “His defensive presence, shot-blocking ability and offensive board work will give us nice depth in our frontcourt.”

The Knicks will be the 6-foot-7 White’s third N.B.A. team. He played six games for San Antonio in 2006-7 and spent the 2008-9 season with Houston.

White, 29, improved his shooting touch the last two seasons in the Italian Serie A league, the highest level in Italian professional basketball. He averaged 17.4 points last year for VL Pesaro. The year before, White led the league in scoring, with 21 points a game for Dinamo Sassari.

White’s athleticism will allow him to play both shooting guard and small forward.

Smith could be the starting shooting guard when the season opens since Iman Shumpert continues to recover from his left knee injury.

With the addition of Camby, 38, and Kidd, 39, Woodson agreed the Knicks had become an older team. He did not flinch when asked whether Camby or Kidd were too old to help the Knicks achieve their goal of winning a championship.

“I haven’t seen a young team win an N.B.A. title in the last 15 years,” he said. “I think that’s why the Heat are loading up with older guys and why Boston did what it did. It’s veteran guys who are winning N.B.A. titles.”

LAS VEGAS — James White isn’t trying to win the NBA Slam-Dunk contest as much as he’s trying to win playing time as a Knicks swingman. Even more minutes might become available if the team doesn’t match Landry Fields’ offer sheet by Saturday.

The former 6-foot-7 Cincinnati high-flier, who has played the last three seasons in Europe, will make his Knicks debut on the summer-league team Saturday when they face the Grizzlies at UNLV’s COX Pavilion.

“I’m going to make the most of it,’’ White said. “Jeremy Lin last year took the opportunity and made the most of it. It comes with hard work.’’

White, the first pick of the second round in 2006, has played 10 career NBA games with the Spurs (six games in 2006-07) and the Rockets (four games in 2008-09) before going overseas to Russia for one season and the Italian League for two.

“I’m a lot better, a lot stronger,’’ White said yesterday before practice. “My all-around game is a lot better than it was from my rookie year. A lot of things of my game get overlooked because everyone looks at YouTube and the dunking. I’m an all-around player. You’ll see in the long run and I’m an all-around good player and not just a dunker.’’

Yeah, but you still have to see that YouTube-video dunk — his head elevating well over the rim, his armpit at rim level.

With eventual starting shooting guard Iman Shumpert probably out until January and the chances of the Knicks matching Fields’ three-year, $19 million Raptors’ offer sheet looking bleak, White may begin as a key piece in the rotation.

“Teams didn’t like what they saw,’’ said coach Mike Woodson, in Las Vegas with the Knicks’ summer-league team. “We brought him in and we liked some of the things he brought to the table. Being able to defend the 2-3 position, he can score a little bit. He’s an athletic player who can get up and down the floor. It’s a matter of him learning the NBA game and finding his niche.”

Woodson seems to have distanced himself from Fields. According to an NBA source, the moment free agency began, the Knicks never made Fields an offer and were more interested in thrusting him into sign-and- trades — with Phoenix, Dallas and others.

Asked about matching Fields’ offer sheet from Toronto, Woodson said, “As it stands right now, it’s about the guys we’ve already made the commitment to and get them where they need to be.’’

General manager Glen Grunwald was more diplomatic.

“We haven’t reached any decision,’’ Grunwald said, adding the club was looking at “what other alternatives might be available to us.’’

The Knicks believe Fields is at his best in the up-tempo attack former coach Mike D’Antoni employed, and his outside shot isn’t getting better. It may be time for Spike Lee to retire Fields’ No. 6 jersey and perhaps don the No. 4 — which White will wear. It’s also the number Nate Robinson, a former dunk champ, wore.

If White sticks with the Knicks, would he vie for the dunk title All-Star weekend?

“That would definitely be great, but that has lot to do with getting playing time and getting the opportunity to be seen,’’ White said. “A lot of people know me as a dunker and a lot of people are asking me to do it. That’s up to the league though.’’

***

The Knicks are expected to receive Lin’s signed offer sheet with the Rockets so they can match it.

***

Woodson will head to the London Olympics to see Tyson Chandler and Carmelo Anthony and will get a special bonus in seeing point guard Pablo Prigioni, who plays for the Argentine Olympic Team and who signed with the Knicks Wednesday.

“I thought he had a great workout for us,’’ Woodson said. “The young man can do a lot of things, running the position. That’s why he’s been one of the top point guards in the European League.’’

***

Woodson said Steve Novak had a stomach procedure after the season and hasn’t been able to practice until now. Woodson said Novak was “sick’’ at season’s end.
