Acquire rights to Labeyrie with the 57th overall pick

NEW YORK, June 26, 2014 – New York Knickerbockers President Phil Jackson announced today that in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft, the team has drafted Cleanthony Early from Wichita State with the 34th overall selection and Thanasis Antetokounmpo from Athens, Greece and the Delaware 87ers of the NBA D-League with the 51st overall selection. Both picks were acquired yesterday from Dallas.

Early, 6-8, 219-pounds, averaged 16.4 points and 5.9 rebounds in 36 games for the Shockers last season. The Middletown, NY native was named to the All-Valley First Team as a junior and senior after being named the NJCAA Division III Player of the Year twice for Sullivan County Community College.

Antetokounmpo, 6-7, 215-pounds, averaged 12.0 points and 4.3 rebounds in 50 games for the 87ers last season after playing professionally in Greece for two seasons.

In addition, the Knicks acquired the draft rights to Louis Labeyrie, the 57th overall selection in the 2014 NBA Draft from Indiana for cash considerations. Labeyrie, 6-10, 200-pounds, is a 22-year-old Gonesse, France native who played professionally in his home country for the past three seasons.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- New York Knicks president Phil Jackson said one of the reasons he wanted to ship Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton to the Dallas Mavericks was to "change some of the chemistry" of his team.

"To do that we felt (it was) important to bring in some new personnel and start with some character guys that we feel can carry this forward," Jackson said on Thursday evening.

In Jackson's first major trade as president, he sent Felton and Chandler to Dallas for point guard Jose Calderon, guard Shane Larkin, center Samuel Dalembert, forward Wayne Ellington and two second-round selections in Thursday night's draft.

Calderon is a strong outside shooter and is seen as a strong fit in the Knicks' triangle offense.

"Jose is a thoughtful guard. He's got great control of the ball. He pushes the ball up, accelerates it up the court," Jackson said. "He's a very good 3-point shooter. He organizes a team quite well and we anticipate he'll fit in to what we're trying to do."

Jackson sees Dalembert as a strong rebounder and interior defender.

"He can replace Tyson's defensive ability -- maybe not be the defensive player of the year like Tyson was, but he's going to be a quality defender," he said.

Jackson, who took over as team president in March, said he could see chemistry issues between Knicks players last season. The team finished with just 37 wins and missed the playoffs for the first time in four seasons.

"Watching them play I saw guys that looked at each other like, 'You didn't back me up, you weren't here when I needed help,' " Jackson said. "There just wasn't the right combination or feel (where) it felt like everybody was in synch all the time."

Chandler drew headlines last season when he questioned coach Mike Woodson's defensive schemes. Felton, meanwhile, was charged with two felony gun counts and last week reached a plea bargain to avoid jail time. Jackson didn't reference Chandler or Felton specifically when he talked about chemistry issues but said he wanted Felton's legal issues to be resolved before agreeing to the deal with the Mavericks.

Jackson hoped that the rest of the Knicks' players were paying attention to the trade.

"Well, we want to send a message to all of our players that we are on the move and we are making changes and we are making changes to move forward in the direction that we want to go," Jackson said. "We want to be more aggressive defensively, we want to have a certain sense of offensive alacrity, getting up and down the court and challenging defenses to get back and protect the basket."

Jackson said he's fielded "a lot of calls" about a "couple" of Knicks players but declined to name who those players were. ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported that the Knicks had talked to teams about trading Iman Shumpert for a first-round pick earlier this week.

The Knicks' president was asked if he "consulted" with free agent Carmelo Anthony about the trade. He corrected the questioner to say that he "informed" Anthony about the deal.

"He saw the value in it and was appreciative of it," Jackson said. He later added, "We just felt that what we are doing appeals to (Carmelo) also and he realizes where he has been and how we want him back."

Jackson also addressed his decision to trade Chandler, who is entering the final year of his contract this coming season. In the transaction, the Knicks forfeited $5 million in cap space in the summer of 2015, when they hope to be able to attract big-name free agents.

"We didn't want to watch another player go off and not get anything in return, so to speak," Jackson said.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Phil Jackson says he doesn't know what will transpire with Carmelo Anthony once free agency begins with LeBron James also on the market.

But the Knicks team president reiterated that he wants Anthony back in a Knicks uniform and again discussed the possibility of Anthony potentially taking less money to help the team be competitive.

"It's a big question because there are so many things that can happen out there," Jackson said when asked if he is more or less optimistic about keeping Anthony as July 1 approaches. "We really don't know. With LeBron getting in this free agency, and all this stuff, kind of tipsy and turvy right now.

"We don't know what all that means. But we have every confidence that Carmelo is good for what his word is, that he wants to be in New York, he likes playing in New York, he wants to compete, he wants to be part of a playoff team that is competitive toward a championship."

Anthony said this past season that he would consider taking less money if it meant being part of a winning team. Jackson talked about that recently and again Thursday night.

"When I take his word, he's the one who opened that up, that it wasn't about the money," Jackson said. "So I challenged him on that, because I wanted our fans to see he's a team player, that he was going to do what's best to get our team ahead farther and faster.

"But you know, that's not going to be an issue. I think there's gonna be things happening in the league in the near future in the NBA that's gonna grow this league, and monetarily it's not going to be an issue for us to do it."

Jackson was asked if the Knicks will offer Anthony a maximum contract. They can pay Anthony up to $129.1 million over five seasons.

"We haven't come to that," Jackson said. "But the perception is we want Carmelo to be as interested in winning. When saying he's competitive and wants to be on a competitive team to also being able to demonstrate that if push comes to shove in a situation where he may have to take a little bit less and we're more competitive to bring in another player to help us bring this concept along."

Jackson said Anthony hasn't told him when he hopes to make a decision. ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard reported that Anthony is planning on visiting with the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and Chicago Bulls once free agency begins July 1. Anthony can receive up to a max of $95.9 million over four years from other teams.

Jackson would not discuss whether he will consider doing a sign-and-trade if Anthony opts to leave.

The Knicks traded Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton on Wednesday to Dallas for Jose Calderon, Samuel Dalembert, Shane Larkin, Wayne Ellington and two second-round 2014 draft picks. Jackson said Anthony was informed of the potential of the trade when the two teams began talking.

Jackson believes the trade improves the team, especially its chemistry. He said the Knicks "want to send a message to all of our players that we are on the move and we are making changes."

Jackson, though, acknowledged that creating enough cap space to be a player in free agency next month remains "a very difficult task."

"We have many handicaps obviously with our salary cap being what it is," Jackson said. "But, you know, there's always a possibility. We're not going to rule ourselves out of any gambit that could possibly put us in the chance to really do something special."

But the Zen Master understands that he doesn't have any control over what will transpire in July and how it only takes one significant bidder to lure away Anthony.

"Well, we don't have control," Jackson said. "Someone goes into free agency, that is what it is about. They have the option to do that. They get a chance to see what other people have to say about it. He is (going) to step into a situation in which people are going to appeal to him and his better self and about what their team is and he is going to have to make that judgment call."

"And we just felt that what we are doing appeals to him also. And he realizes where he has been and how we want him back."

Well if that's true, then we need to resign Baby Melo aka Chris Copeland once his Indy contract is up...

but so far only JLin has panned out as a decent player after leaving the Knicks in recent yrs, unless you wanna go all the way back to Trevor Ariza

basically... I'm sure Phil is doing behind the scenes stuff but no need to pay & actively recruit ppl until Melo comes back from his FA trips and we can hash out the details & get him back

after that we can make trades & sign FAs
