Now that the Knicks' Steve Novak Era has begun, will there be a K-Mart in the club's future?

Last night, the Knicks claimed 6-foot-10 reserve shooting forward Steve Novak off waivers on the same day Kenyon Martin's contract was bought out by his Chinese team, Xinjiang.

Martin, according to his agent, Andy Miller, is flying back to the U.S. for Christmas, but he is ineligible to play until after his team's season in the Chinese Basketball a.ssociation is over -- likely in mid-March.

A source familiar with the Knicks' thinking said it is "possible" the Knicks would have interest in signing Martin later in the season if they need a jolt up front and they will pocket their $2.5 million exception. A source said the 33-year-old former Nets star would be amenable to joining the Knicks.

Another Chinese league player of interest also would be ex-Knick Wilson Chandler, who still is playing in Asia and also wouldn't be eligible until March. Multiple sources said Chandler would love a return to the Knicks, who reluctantly traded him to Denver in the Carmelo Anthony deal last February.

"I don' think anything stands out now," coach Mike D'Antoni said before the Knicks' 88-82 win over the Nets in last night's preseason finale at the Garden. "I think we're good everywhere. Maybe three weeks from now I'll have a better answer for you. If you can better the roster, [interim general manager] Glen [Grunwald] will do that. But we're no desperate to do something. We're not.''

For now they have Novak, who will make the minimum for a player of his service -- roughly $1.1 million. The Knicks claimed him off waivers instead of letting him clear just in case another team such as Miami had the urge. Novak was at the Garden last night but did not dress.

"He's a shooter and spreads the floor, it's obvious something we could need," D'Antoni said. "You can't have too many shooters.''

Novak, 26, has been strictly a low-end reserve during his five seasons but has a 41 percent 3-point career shooting percentage -- which always attracts D'Antoni's attention because his up-tempo offense creates a lot of open shots from the 3-point line.

"It's a great fit," agent Mark Bartlestein told The Post. "Mike puts a premium on shooters and he's one of the best 3-point shooting big men in the league.''

The 6-foot-10, 240-pounder out of Marquette has averaged four points and 9.7 minutes in a career 225 games. He has played for the Houston, Clippers, Dallas and Spurs. He was the 32nd overall pick in the draft in 2006, selected by the Rockets.

According to the source, Anthony wants Martin in New York, though he is not permitted to sign a contract until March, when his Chinese team is through with the playoffs. The rugged forward was bought out earlier this week and was expected home for the holidays.

The source said Martin considers the Knicks his top choice, partly because of his friendship with Anthony. They became tight during their nearly seven seasons together in Denver. Martin could fill the role of another gritty big man off the bench with athleticism.

Andrew Smith talked about this right after the trade went down and again over the summer before Martin went to China. Hard not to love Martin’s toughness. The guy is a pro and playoff tested. Sign me up.

If the Knicks match up against the heat, sick Martin on Bosh like Riley stuck Xavier McDaniel and Anthony Mason on Scottie Pippen and let’s go…

A win is a win is a win...

The BXSC has got to be the WORST forum I pop my head in from time to time, but I enjoy hearing from the Knick faithful that I've developed relationships with over the years when we were turrible. The hypocrisy of some of these posters in the gamethreads cracks me up, and almost makes it worth it for me to come back every now and again.

How can some of those f*gs throw shots at us because we beat a Pierce-less Celtics squad, when they rip us apart for bringing up the fact they beat us without 2 of our BIG 3 at the time in Chauncey and Amar'e? Coupled with the Rose jockey's joining the frenzy, and in the same breathe celebrating their point-GOD's winning bucket in a game they had no business winning against a BYNUM-less Lakers squad?

These guys will never give credit when its due, they will never acknowledge the Knicks are indeed "back"...until we win a title. And even if we did, it wouldn't stop there.

*They were the first one's to say we'd strikeout in Free Agency, we landed Amar'e.
*They poked fun at the max deal, said he couldn't play without Nash, ripped on his medical history, and even compared him to David Lee.
*They said our package would never net us a player of Melo's caliber, and when it did...Melo is not a superstar and Denver r*ped us.
*They laughed at our pursuit of CP3, said we'll never be anything without a center who can play D and rebound the basketball. And when we decided to go in that direction by signing what was regarded as the key addition to the World Champion Dallas Mavericks, we overpayed a bum center.

It doesn't matter what these idiots say, there's no reason to justify anything we do. It will never matter to them, why should it matter to us? I hope this fanbase starts to take on the identity of what this team is actually becoming...a bunch of grown a.ss men who won't back down from anyone. A grew up of individuals who have come together in hopes of one thing...a championship.

These other fan bases don't think we belong in those "championship" discussions...fu*k EM. They think that Amar'e and Melo can't win a title because they don't play D...fu*k EM. They think D'Antoni's style will never win a championship...fu*k EM. They think we're the same ol' Knicks...fu*k EM!!!

I don't care to be the favorites...I grew up watching the bully ball of the early 90's Knicks squads. We were never the favorites. Granted, we never won a title during those runs...but it was a joy to watch. I don't care if we get beat in the playoffs, as long as we continue moving forward to accomplishing our goal. And when we do, it will make it all that sweeter.

fu*k EM!!! LETS GO KNICKS!!!

I hear ya BL...hope you had a Merry Christmas brother, I know I did. Anytime a Boston team loses to NY, I feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I know Lin impressed for that one week in Summer League (lol)...but I'd look into ANY pass-first point at this juncture on a 10-day contract.

'I’m on a train going to cover some games today, but wanted to give some quick thoughts on the Jeremy Lin signing.

I have covered the Ivy League since finishing my playing career at Columbia in 2006. There is still argument amongst many Ivy League aficionados as to who was the best player to come through the league this millennium. But one thing no one argues about is who the biggest surprise was. Undoubtedly, it was Jeremy Lin. He was never bestowed a ton of hype coming into Harvard but over his first 2 seasons went from good role player to the most versatile and dangerous player in the league in his Junior and Senior campaigns. During his Junior year, he was the only player in the country to rank in the top 10 in their conference across all statistical categories. In his senior year, he lit up UConn for 30pts (61% from field), 9 rebounds, 3 a.ssists and 2 monster dunks that put him on the national map. To those of us that followed the league, it just vindicated what we had been saying for some time. He may not look like a physical freak, and yes went to Harvard, but the kid can play.

In terms of his game now, he doesn’t do anything great but does everything well. He’s a combo guard, not a true PG but able to play either position. He’s a decent 3 point shooter. His mid-range game is his bread and butter. He is a patient guy on the wing and uses his body well to create space off the pivot. The most interesting thing about his game is he’s a sneaky good athlete. He has a good first step and can finish over guys. He has a solid handle and good court vision. He has long arms for a guard and good anticipation on the defensive end of the court, which enables him to get a lot deflections and steals. He’ll need to show improvement in is his lateral quickness on the ball and defending the pick and roll. The Knicks will need Lin to step up in this area and keep guys out of the lane.

In terms of his role for this squad, he should be a solid guy off the bench. With Bibby coming back, I think he’ll get most of the 2nd unit minutes at PG with Lin getting some time at PG and SG (maybe 10 mpg total). He doesn’t have the upside of Shumpert or the same type of physical talent but will be able to pick his spots on offense, play very hard on defense, and rebound from the guard spot. Lin will help this team most in terms of his effort and basketball IQ. He’s bounced around the league already in only 1 full season so he will be looking to make an impression in the country’s biggest market. Looking at this team and the city it represents, the way to do that is by defending, rebounding and just being tough. I think he’ll understand that and bring all those things to the table. Additionally, he won’t do a lot to hurt you. Obviously he is intelligent coming from Harvard, but he really understands the game and the right way to play it. He may not be the seasoned veteran many people want added to the team, but he will bring it every day and has the intangibles to help this team until B Davis and Shump get healthy again."

No problem with losing this one, and I don't even think its as much a stinker as most are making it out to be.

First off, I want to give props to Marc Jackson and what he's doing for this Warriors ball club. His philosophy reminds me a little of Doc Rivers, who also came from a very similar background. The Warriors can run, but I like that his focus is on half-court sets and running the clock. With Monta-Curry-Lee, the W's will have no problem scoring the basketball...but controlling the clock by slowing it down will keep them in games longer. Also, the addition of Brandon Rush could go down as one of the more underrated moves good teams seem to make.

I'm not going to jump off a ledge because of one game. I'm not going to call for D'Antoni's head or try to find a loophole to void Chandler's contract. There were actually some positives I can take away from games like these...

-Our defense in the 1st half was excellent. Foul trouble limited Chandler's impact on that side of the ball down the stretch. When Chandler picked up his 5th foul in the beginning of the 4th quarter, I actually wished D'Antoni would leave him in and hope he could get some solid minutes out of him. Tyson just couldn't find a rhythm.

-Fields looked MUCH better tonight. He's struggled finding his niche alongside Melo and Stat since the trade last year. I have no doubt he'll figure it out, whether as the starting 2 or as a role player off the bench.

-Though Stat and Melo struggled from the field, D'Antoni is developing some of our secondary players with solid bench roles. I have a lot of respect for Bill Walker and what he could contribute. He doesn't back down from anyone, I just wish his defense reflected that mentality. Even Novak drilled an open look corner 3. We have some solid pieces but If this team wants to move into contender category, we need to upgrade the backup big situation. A KMart would do wonders.

It's obvious this team is simply lacking a playmaker at the point. Toney Douglas is not that guy. In a different system...maybe. He's simply an undersized shooting guard that is more valuable off the bench. I truly believe Baron Davis will negate this weakness once he comes back. Say what you want (believe me, I've said plenty), but he would be the best pg D'Antoni had to work with since he's taken over as Knicks coach. He fits our needs on the court and in the locker room. The guy is the perfect fit in NY.

Good game by the W's...keep playing like this and you'll make it interesting in the West. Looking forward to see more of Klay Thompson as well.
