Jared Jeffries is drawing the interest of several teams seeking to acquire him from Houston, a source told Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports. This final season of Jeffries' contract pays him $6.9 million.

The Knicks are offering the expiring contract of Eddy Curry plus other a.ssets the team has stockpiled since missing out on LeBron James.

There is speculation that New York will make a push to trade for Carmelo Anthony or Chris Paul before the season begins. The Nuggets and Hornets maintain that they are not interested in trading their respective superstars.

looks like it's true,

The Knicks will sign Roger Mason Jr. to a one-year contract worth $1.4 million.

New York will sign Mason in lieu of Rudy Fernandez. Portland was seeking a future No. 1 pick for Fernandez.

The Knicks will name Isiah Thomas a part-time consultant to the team but keep his job as head coach of Florida International.

Thomas was cited during the Amar'e Stoudemire press conference for helping in the recruitment of the Suns forward. Thomas also was dispatched on the eve of LeBron James' decision to meet with one of the members of his entourage whom he knew.

Since he left the organization as a consultant to Donnie Walsh to head the FIU program two years ago, Thomas has remained close with owner James Dolan and kept his house in Westchester. Thomas' involvement with recruiting Stoudemire has led to speculation he could return to the Knicks as GM, a job which is vacant.

Thomas has been on a campaign to try to rebuild his image for a return to the NBA, but Dolan risks the backlash of the fans if he gives Thomas a prominent role. Dolan, however, clearly wants to help Thomas.

The Post reported two weeks ago Thomas was at 2 Penn Plaza meeting with Dolan and others. The Knicks denied at the time it was a job interview, but at the very least, Dolan is bent on helping Thomas restore an image that was mired by the s3xual harassment lawsuit defeat against former employee Anucha-Browne Sanders.

Donnie Walsh maintains he is not hiring a general manager any time soon, with Allan Houston and recently fired Mark Warkentien of the Nuggets potential candidates.

Ronny Turiaf represents a major health risk but should be a legitimate low-post presence.
The finale of a three-part look at the players the Knicks acquired from the Golden State Warriors.

The Knicks entered the offseason with the scary proposition that Eddy Curry stood as their starting center -- not to mention the only one on the roster. But after signing Timofey Mozgov from Europe and trading for former Golden State Warrior Ronny Turiaf in the David Lee deal, the Knicks have three centers in the mix for a starting gig.

Oddly enough, Turiaf, who missed 40 games last season, is the most well-known quantity of the bunch entering next season but that doesnít make the situation less unstable.

Turiaf, 27, has a balky left knee that limited his availability last season to merely 42 games but even so, heíll f!ght for a starting job next season should the Knicks opt to slide Amare Stoudemire to his more natural position at the power forward. In addition to his knee issues, the French product had open-heart surgery five years ago to correct a serious heart condition discovered after he was selected in the 2005 draft.

Turiaf represents a major health risk going forward but he should provide the Knicks with a legitimate low-post presence they've long desired. He certainly hasnít carved out an five-year NBA career because of his scoring chops.

While Turiaf has almost no scoring skills on the block, itís worth noting that he doesnít waste possessions down there either. Among players who averaged 20 minutes per game last season, Turiaf used the eighth lowest percentage (11.3) of his teamís possessions on a shot, foul, or turnover. According to Synergy Sports Technology, the 6-10, 250 pound Gonzaga alum only used 20 post ups last season during his 872 minutes of playing time. That selfless discipline keeps him in the lineup even if heís reliant on his teammates to hand him gimmes down low and put-backs off of misses.

The defensive end is where Turiaf shines. He may not be taller than Stoudemire and Anthony Randolph, but heís wide enough and quick enough to compensate for his vertical deficiencies at the five. Heís particularly effective guarding the pick-and-roll as a lane-clogger against penetrating ball-handlers. According to Synergy data, opponents scored on only 34.8 percent of their pick-and-rolls against a tandem featuring Turiaf, ranking him third best in the league (league average is 40.3 percent). Furthermore, the Warriors were 4.5 points per 100 possessions stingier with Turiaf inserted into the lineup according to 82games.com.

The Knicks will rely on Turiaf to be healthy because heís one of only three true centers on the roster but luckily, the Knicks success isnít predicated on production from the center position. As is, the Knicks should have enough scoring punch in their starting rotation with Stoudemire, Danilo Gallinari, and Raymond Felton to swallow Turiafís ineffectiveness on the offensive end. In a practical sense, Turiaf will be asked to balance Stoudemireís skill set on the court and Turiaf should fulfill that role just fine if he can stay healthy.
We knew this, but good stats.

Donnie Walsh has been absolutely brilliant this summer.

Love the Mason signing, love the Amar'e signing, love the Felton signing...not much of a Felton fan but Walsh got him on a BARGAIN of a deal...He r*ped GS in the Lee trade, Landry Fields looks like a potential 2nd round steal, and we still have the flexiblity to land Melo next year... What a beautifully executed offseason. So much for Lecon or bust.

The future of NY basketball is a bright one. I'm too hyped for the upcoming season.

Can you provide some insight to your hate?

Douglas isn't ready to be the full-time and there weren't many alternatives. Felton = Stopgap. His contract is 2012 friendly AKA the summer Dwill and Cp3 become available.

Im not that high on him as a player but his contract is a bargain and easy to move if need be. He's still young with room to improve and D'antoni's system suits his game to a tee. I guess time will tell... Honestly it'll just be refreshing not having to watch that scrub Duhon running the offense.

Insight: Dantoni's system fits felton, but his talent is not at the level where it can be executed effectively at a consistent basis.

I swear, I'll renounce my love of all things Knicks if that man is put back into power. He's an absolute snake, and a poor excuse of a man. He will continue undermining Walsh'Toni saying they couldn't land the big fish (LBJ) and that he can bring them Melo and Paul. Dolan has got to be the worst owner in all of sports. This guy does not know how to properly run a business, it's obvious he was a trust fund baby who never learned how to properly make money.

After 2+ seasons of restoring our franchises reputation around the league, and even fans of other teams...we go right back to being the laughingstock with the mere mention of Isiah's name. How doesn't Dolan see this?

Knicks Sign Second Round Rookie Andy Rautins

[pic - click to view]

New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh announced today that the team has signed guard Andy Rautins, the 38th overall selection in the 2010 NBA Draft, to a player contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Rautins, 6-4, 194-pounds, played four seasons at Syracuse University and averaged 12.1 points and 4.9 a.ssists as a senior in 2009-10. He finished his collegiate career ranked second on the schoolís all-time list for three-point field goals made (282) and attempted (754). He also became the 53rd Syracuse player to score at least 1,000 career points (1,121). In 2010 NBA Summer League play in Las Vegas, Rautins averaged 5.8 points, 1.4 a.ssists and 23.9 minutes in five games as a member of the Knicks entry.

Carmelo Anthony to NY becoming more a possibility, he's not signing that extension for now and it's building tension. Melo's been telling his boys he's in a NY State of Mind

and with Paul officially off the market, Tony seems like a more likely option. Eva Longaria was asked at the soccer game yesterday and said that Tony pretty much wants to play in NY aka she can't get the exposure she wants to help with her s**tty career in SA

The message remains consistent and familiar, even after a summer of upgrading the roster: The Knicks just don't have enough a.ssets to be legit players in a blockbuster trade for a high-end talent such as Chris Paul or Carmelo Anthony. In fact, as we reported in the July 28 editions of Newsday, they don't even have enough to make an amenable deal for Rudy Fernandez.

We also first told you in that story that Fernandez would bolt for Spain rather than spend another season being miserable in Portland. A source close to the player made it crystal clear that Fernandez would have no problem sitting out a year back home waiting for his contract to expire before he could sign with a team in his home country.

It's the only leverage Fernandez has to force a trade, though the Blazers, so far, aren't blinking and aren't at all interested in what the Knicks could offer. They'd like a first round pick, but the Knicks can't offer one until 2014.

Meanwhile, as we told you in Tuesday's editions of Newsday, the Knicks can't engage the Nuggets in talks for Carmelo -- even if that's the player's preferred destination -- because the Nuggets first need to hire a GM. David Griffin, the former Suns executive, is considered the lead candidate.

And naturally the minute the stories started to come out that Carmelo plans to pass on the Nuggets' three-year, $65M extension offer and intends to sign with the Knicks, the rebuttals that the Knicks don't have enough value to trade for him and that other teams could make a play, instead (Nets, Rockets) were sure to emerge. SI.com reported, citing sources, that the Nets and Rockets are also on Carmelo's list of preferred destinations.[The Nets I can understand, because of the proximity to New York City and the pending move to his Brooklyn roots, but Houston? How does a move to Houston make any sense when you consider why he'd leave Denver -- to get back East and in a major market?]

As we said here in the previous blog, this situation could turn into another LeBron James/Cavaliers fiasco for the Nuggets if they aren't proactive. But that doesn't mean they need to make a trade in August or even September.

The Knicks, in fact, would probably prefer to wait until November or December, if not before the February trade deadline, to get something done mainly because it gives them the time they need to -- they hope -- showcase one or two of their young players. For instance, they have Anthony Randolph and believe he can be a dynamic talent, especially in Mike D'Antoni's system. There is also Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari. If one of them starts putting up strong numbers, their value would go up and perhaps that would be enough to make something happen on a grander scale, such as a blockbuster trade for Carmelo.

Of course the argument is that the Knicks could avoid giving up any of their young players and just wait until July when Carmelo becomes a free agent and sign him with their available salary cap space (they'd have to wait until a new CBA is completed, however, with the probability of a new system in place). But the Knicks have to be careful not to let Carmelo slip out from under them if the Nuggets decide they would rather trade him now and get legit value for him rather than putting on the same blinders the Cavs wore last July and lose him as a free agent for nothing.

The Fernandez-to-Spain situation could also find the Blazers more motivated to deal before the season, though it's certain the team would first suspend Fernandez if he went AWOL and refused to report. They could effectively keep him out of the NBA out of spite, unless, of course, a team comes along with an offer they liked. The Bulls and Celtics have made strong overtures -- Chicago would be a perfect destination for Fernandez -- but the Blazers have yet to engage.

Still, as we said at the top, August is not the time to make these types of deals. Expect the activity to peak before and during training camp.
