Knicks president Donnie Walsh confirmed to the New York Daily News that Nate Robinson's agent contacted him earlier in the week to discuss the guard's status.

Robinson was benched on Friday night for the eighth straight game.

According to a source, agent Aaron Goodwin first contacted Walsh about Robinson after his initial benching on Dec. 2 against Orlando.

"Anytime he's talked to me he's been very courteous, and look, he wants Nate to get out in front," said Walsh. "I told him, 'Look, from [coach] Mike [D'Antoni's] first statement on this, he said Nate's going out of the rotation but it won't be forever. I'll get back to you.' The idea is to get Nate playing the way (D'Antoni) wants him to, so that's what I'm going with. I'm OK with what Mike wants to do in any game."

Walsh added that he's not looking to trade Robinson.

"There are conversations going on every day, but that doesn't mean there's going to be a trade," he said, referring to dialogue in the Knicks' front office. "I haven't been shopping anybody....I'm not shopping him."

Jonathan Bender made his debut with the Knicks on Friday night, scoring nine points in New York's win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Knicks overcame a 20-point deficit in the first half to beat the Clippers 95-91 at Madison Square Garden.

"It feels good," said Bender, who also had 2 rebounds, 1 block and 1 flagrant foul in his first game since Nov. 5, 2005. "I was real excited. I had a lot of adrenaline going out. I just wanted to get out there and do good, definitely make my first shot. After I got that off my back, I felt pretty good from there."

Aaron Goodwin, agent for Nate Robinson, told The Post today he is asking Donnie Walsh for his client to be traded in wake of his eight straight DNPs.The final straw came when Robinson did not play the past two games vs.

Chicago and the Clippers last night despite Larry Hughes' groin injury.

Referring to a remark D'Antoni made Thursday in Chicago, Goodwin said, "He made the statement he'd play Satan if Satan could help him win, and I found that to be disrespectful to Nate. Nate gave 4 1/2 years to the Knicks and tried like hell to win games, and he didn't look Nate's way."
The Beginning of the end for Nate. This is all on him not the organization. He was given more then 1 chance to grow up.

Now lets see what we can get for him.

Agent Aaron Goodwin has asked the Knicks to look into trading guard Nate Robinson.

Robinson has been glued to the bench in recent weeks. He hasn't played in New York's last eight games.

A team spokesman says the request was made Saturday and that Knicks team president Donnie Walsh will have discussions with Goodwin.

New York coach Mike D'Antoni insists that the benching isn't personal. He claims that he's only playing the guys he feels give the team their best chance to win.

"We're trying to win," D'Antoni said. "I can't explain exactly every second the ins and outs, and we were on a roll and that roll doesn't quit just because you lose a game. You see over time if this works or not."

Nate Robinson's agent, Aaron Goodwin, officially made a trade request to Donnie Walsh. So now everyone will find out if what the Knicks had whispered all summer -- no one wanted Robinson in a trade during the offseason -- still holds true.

We know Mike D'Antoni and the coaching staff preferred to not have Robinson back this season. When he was re-signed, D'Antoni met with Robinson and they talked about the behavior issues (it's not just the bravado, Fixers, it's also a grating lack of professionalism and maturity that are magnified on a losing team). D'Antoni decided he would stick with Robinson and try to use him in his best role -- scorer off the bench -- and hoped he possibly could pair him with rookie Toney Douglas for an athletic, high-scoring tandem. But the same issues came up on defense -- Robinson often freelances rather than follow the defensive gameplan, which leads to breakdowns all over the floor -- and the fact that Nate shot the ball so poorly early on compounded the issues.

Confidants urged D'Antoni to bench Robinson, but he stuck with him until he finally relented and made the move. The success the team had afterward -- four straight wins -- was undeniable. But, to be fair, not entirely attributable to Robinson's absence.

Goodwin insisted that Robinson went to Walsh when he became a restricted free agent on July 1 and told him he would not sign any offer sheets from other teams because his intention was to stay in New York.

The Knicks looked at several point guard upgrade options during the summer -- Jason Kidd, Andre Miller and Ramon Sessions -- while they left Robinson (and David Lee) unsigned until a week before training camp.

Those from Robinson's camp will tell you the Lakers and Magic had interest in Robinson. We'd also add that the Chicago Bulls could use his scoring punch off the bench to make up for some of what they lost from the departure of Ben Gordon.

If the Knicks like Tyrus Thomas that much, the salaries are close enough to make it work straight up. We have in the past suggested the Knicks could ask for Jordan Farmar from the Lakers, but his $1.9M salary isn't enough to make up the money swap, so they would have to be part of a bigger deal, perhaps with a third team involved.

From the Magic, the Knicks would also have to work a multi-player deal to make the finances work.

Of course all deals would have to bring expiring contracts in return.

I wouldn't expect anything imminent. In fact, as some were suggesting this summer, there might not be any activity at all. What teams might prefer to do is wait for the Knicks to agree to a buyout with Robinson so they can sign him for a much lower number.

I'd have to think the Knicks have little interest in doing that.

We've won/lost with Nate, we can win/lose without him. He can pack his bags and sit by the phone for all I care, but he and his agent are causing rumblings that are starting to become a distraction.

It always seems our management can never be right in the way they handle situations, controversy always follows this franchise. It's just funny to me that those who cause the controversy are ego maniacs who don't bode well to criticisms (in most recent case Nate, and Marbury). Now I'm not saying Nate is anywhere near on the level of Marbury mentally, but the situations are similar.

I'm just glad that this time our management is smart enough to get rid of the player who doesn't fit and comply with the way things are being run, then the proven coach...not the other way around.

Dec. 22nd can't come to soon.

I think NY rather wait and use him to move Eddy and Jeffries, but I've already accepted that Eddy and Jeffries are here next year. Eddy more then Jeffries since he's looked trade-able the last few weeks.

Nate for Ty Thomas
Nate for Farmer + Filler
Nate for Redd*ck
Nate for Foye

The question is do any of those teams want him.

Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni was reportedly against re-signing guard Nate Robinson this past offseason.

Robinson hasn't played in New York's last eight games, heading into Sunday's action, and D'Antoni claims that the decision not to play the guard isn't personal.

Robinson's agent, Aaron Goodwin, has asked the Knicks to look into trading his client.

Multiple sources told the New York Daily News that D'Antoni was against re-signing the guard, who was a restricted free agent.

D'Antoni's decision to bench Nate seems to only confirm the reports.

ALAN HAHN

David Lee and Nate Robinson came in together as rookies, grew up together as fan favorites and even signed together what could be their final contracts with the Knicks in September.

But as Lee has picked up where he left off as one of Mike D'Antoni's favorite players -- notice how much he has the ball as a decision-makerf at the top of the offense lately? --Robinson has found himself among the unwanted buried deep on the bench.

And while the players miss the entertaining spontaneity of the effervescent 5-9 guard, who is as popular among his teammates as he is among fans, there is also a keen understanding among the Chosen Few (rotation players) that you can't argue with the results. In the nine games since Robinson was moved out of the rotation and D'Antoni has gone with the truncated rotation, the team is 6-3, including Sunday's win over the Charlotte Bobcats.

"I think the hardest part about it is that everybody on the team knows Nate's a good guy and he's got a good heart and he plays very, very hard out there," Lee said. "It kind of happened quickly there, playing and then suddenly not playing. It's just about continuing to try to be a good teammate to him like everyone else and know it's pretty much our of our control."

Lee, who obviously has no qualms with his focal-point role and team-high 35:08 per game, was also quick to defend D'Antoni for making the switch to using mostly six to seven players in games, with spot minutes going to an eighth player on most nights.

"It's not like Coach in Phoenix played like 13 guys and suddenly he comes here and is making this up," Lee said. "He's been a coach in the past who has gone with an eight or nine-man rotation and he's found some success doing it these past 10 games. Whether that's the reason for success or whether it's just a coincidence, it would be tough for him to go back and change it now. We've won a couple in a row."

But some within the group standing around Lee couldn't quite grasp the concept. So Lee was asked why teammates haven't come forward to publicly defend Robinson. As if this was like the movie Rudy and the players were to go to D'Antoni's office and drop their jerseys on his desk in protest.

"You all know Nate's my friend, we've been friends for five years now," Lee said. "He's my teammate, but part of being on a team is respecting what Coach and what Mr. Walsh chooses to do as far as playing time. Whether I wore a 'Play Nate' t-shirt or whether I said I don't like the kid doesn't affect their decision. That's what Coach wants to do and just like Nate, I have to play my role and do what I'm told and that's what I'm doing right now. I'd love to have him back in there, but if he's not back in there that's up to Coach and them and has nothing to do with any other players."

* * *

* - D'Antoni absolutely loves what he's getting off the bench from Jonathan Bender, who had 11 points (3-for-3 from downtown) in 14:42 against the Bobcats. "Once he gets a little bit stronger and gets used to what we're doing," D'Antoni said, "he's very positive." Bender has made 5 of 8 from the field in two games and is a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range. He does have four turnovers, however, and has shown some issues in controling the ball, but his size and shooting touch make him difficult to guard on the perimeter and you can tell D'Antoni is already looking to find more ways to involve the 7-footer into his strategy. And as Bender emerges, as Anthony Rieber wrote on Sunday, that means the plug has been pulled on The Eddy Curry Trade Showcase.

* - Al Harrington logged 31:18 off the bench, but scored just 10 points on 10 field goal attempts (four makes) and shot 1-for-5 from three-point range. He is shooting 31.3 percent from downtown this season and has taken the third-most attempts (147) on the team. It seems like a subtle move, but in watching the past few games it does appear that D'Antoni is trying to reduce Harrington's role within the offense. He moved him back to the bench and the system is clearly starting to transform around the triumverate of Lee, Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler as the primary players. Chris Duhon may be still getting major minutes, but as Toney Douglas continues to learn how to play the pick-and-roll, you will see his minutes steadily increase.

* - Some of you may have missed it, but we did report last week that the Knicks have held an interest in Anthony Randolph since last season. The Warriors may be willing to trade the former lottery pick but from what I'm told the price would be extremely high (Gallinari). The Knicks have absolutely no interest in making that swap.

* - In our NBA Hot Shots on Sunday, we reported a potential move by the Cleveland Cavaliers to acquire Troy Murphy from the Pacers for Zydrunas Ilgauskas. We then offered a reason why Jared Jeffries should also be under consideration for Cleveland.
