Nice Post...and I agree with much of what you said.

As much as I can't stand No Sharrington A.K.A Free Candy...he does put up points in bunches, extends the defense and can play some pretty solid defense when he's into it. He'll have the whole year to find his ROLE, becuase he's nothing more than a ROLE player...but he can be a good one.

I'm not so sure about Wilson becoming more of a vocal leader, he just doesnt possess those leadership qualities. He's more the "Silent a.ssasin". We all know who the leader of this squad is going to be for this season, and I'm more than fine with Gallo a.ssuming that role.

I do see Lee digressing as well, but possibly adding new elements to his game (extended J). He had an awesome year last year, but he really hurt us on the defensive end. With the additions of Milicic and Hill possibly getting some time at the 5, I can see his rebounding totals dip a bit while his scoring #'s go down (since he wont be able to use his speed off the dribble against slower Centers). He'll still see plenty of time at the 5 though, Im sure of it.
Word... Harrington will find his role, he'll know the offense better, and within 2 months of the season starting, you'll notice his game taking form and him maturing.

Wilson is the silent k!ller, but he will be more vocal this yr. He listens when people tell him, and D'Antoni has now told him in so many words, "This is your time to show you can be an All-Star, and you will be one in this offense if you're being more vocal." I doubt he'll be an All-Star this year, but he can have a skill set like Caron Butler (though not as good) by the middle of the season if he keeps progressing, including finishing games.

Agreed about Lee. But I am betting that as the year goes on Jordan Hill will start to chip away at getting more and more PT. Lee should've accepted the 7-9 mill and work at securing his position and "shine time" in the offense AND defense, before Hill takes it. Cuz if he doesn't start practicing with the team soon, his the D might as well be left out his nickname. Lee needs get with it, before he hurts his stock. WTF does Bartelstein think he's gon get this dude? 10-12 mil? Not even in 2010, no one will give him that. Improve on the court for another yr, then maybe some team will at least give thought to 10-12 mill...

The Knicks have reached an agreement with David Lee on a one-year contract that will pay him $7 million and an additional $1 million bonus if the team makes the playoffs this coming season.

The contract could pay Lee more than triple the amount of his qualifying offer even though it appears that Lee did not have any other options at this late stage of the off-season.

"They did something that's never been done before," Mark Bartelstein said about the Knicks' decision to pay Lee based on performance rather than forcing him to accept his $2.6 million qualifying offer.

The Knicks turned away a number of sign-and-trade proposals brokered by Bartelstein. Portland made a substantial offer to Lee in late July, but he turned it down. "Unless something was completely life-changing from another team, I was planning to come back to New York," David Lee said. -- NY Times

^^Exactly^^

I remember that BS article a month or so ago about Lee and Nate feeling "disrespected" by Knicks brass and everyone ran with it. Walsh has been upfront about what he's been trying to do here from the get. He waited out the market and let is determine Lee and Nate's value. They had no other options really but signing a 1 year deal with the Knicks. With their backs against the wall, Walsh could have easily just made them except the Qualifying Offer...but out of goodwill, signed them at their market value.

He would like to have both (or at least Lee) locked up, but he needs the flexibility going into the 2010 Free Agency period. They understand he's just doing his job, and he's still done right by his players giving them their "mini" payday.

Knicks guard Nate Robinson is happy to have re-signed with the team and believes that they will shock the league this season.

"We're going to shock everybody this year," Robinson told Newsday.

Alan Hahn of Newsday then asked Robinson if he felt the Knicks could make the playoffs this season.

"I think we can," the guard replied. "The only thing about our team is we just have to play defense. We can score points. That's easy. There are nights we might be off, but we can still score. It's just stopping the other team from scoring ... We have everything else. We just have to pick up our defense and everything will be OK."

Mike D'Antoni told the media that he has never seen a shooter as good as Danilo Gallinari.

"He's the best shooter I've ever seen," D'Antoni said.

Donnie Walsh said that the Knicks will have more 2010 cap room than any other club.

"We have the most room in the league," Walsh said. "That's good. We're No. 1."

Walsh & D'Antoni Address The Media....(knicks.com)

Knicks Notebook: Walsh, D'Antoni Happy with Roster, Eye Playoffs
by Mike Slane, nyknicks.com
Posted Sept 25 2009, 8:30 p.m.

Donnie Walsh and Mike D’Antoni’s annual Media Day officially marked the end of a long offseason. The Knicks’ president and head coach met with the media for the first time during the 2009-10 season on Friday – five days before training camp tips off in Saratoga – to discuss the team’s recent roster moves and what to expect this year.

There was certainly excitement and anticipation in the conference room at the MSG Training Center as the pair, entering their second season together, began looking forward to the season that will hopefully snap a six-year playoff drought.

“I’m not going to say it’s not going to be tough (to make the playoffs), but I think it’s tough for any team first of all,” D’Antoni said. “But I go back to the fact that we have a lot of question marks, and if a few of these question marks can come through then we’ll have a very good chance. We lost 18 games by five points or less last year, and won 32.”

Some of the question marks for next season include Danilo Gallinari’s health, Eddy Curry’s return, Darko Milicic’s potential, and how much the team’s two rookies can contribute this season. “If two or three of those question marks come through, I think we’re right there,” D’Antoni said.

The Knicks are bringing back their core group of players from last season, along with the additions of free agent Milicic and first-round picks Jordan Hill and Toney Douglas. Friday afternoon’s re-signing of restricted free agents Nate Robinson and David Lee brings the roster total to 20 players (five above the league limit), including the retired Cuttino Mobley.

“I’m excited about the team and I’m really excited that a lot of the guys are back from last year and we don’t have to go through another process of trying to get them all together,” D’Antoni said. “They’ll be ready to go.”

Another bright spot about the Knicks’ offseason is the fact Walsh was able to continue along with his plan of creating significant cap room for next summer while still competing for a playoff berth this season. Right now, according to Walsh, the Knicks currently have the most cap space in the NBA.

“I think we did the best we could do in trying to be competitive for this year and yet retain the salary cap flexibility that we want next year and the year after,” Walsh said. “That was the goal when I got here and that remains the goal. This summer was going to be a test of that, because it was hard to go out, particularly in this second summer, only looking for guys who can take a one-year contract. You couldn’t look for free agents or trades that brought you guys into next summer. That really confines what you can do.”

Don’t Expect Many In-Season Trades

Last season, the Knicks reshaped their roster throughout the year - making four major in-season trades and signing a handful of young prospects late in the season. This year, don’t expect to see many moves. “My history is I don’t trade during the season,” Walsh said.

“There are guys on one-year contracts and I don’t know how we give them away for other guys on one-year contracts, and you can’t eat up the cap for next year,” D’Antoni added. “I’m hoping we stay the way we are all year and we overachieve. If something great comes up, I’m sure Donnie will pull the trigger on it.”

Knicks Look Forward to Curry’s Return

Curry was limited to a grand total of 12 minutes in three games last season, as he battled knee problems that eventually affected his overall conditioning. Following an intense offseason training regimen, the Knicks believe he is on pace to once again become a dominate offensive player in the NBA.

“I think Eddy has basically worked on his body all summer,” Walsh said. “He’s worked very hard and put himself in a position to come into training camp, but he hasn’t played NBA basketball. He hasn’t gone up and down the court at the speed you’d go even in practice in the NBA, so I think it’s going to take him time to get back into the flow.”

Walsh was told that Curry weighed 317 pounds last week, about 40-something pounds less than he weighed at the end of last season. Walsh also pointed out that he gained muscle at the same time.

The Knicks are hoping Curry can get back to the days when he was one of the league’s most dominate players in the low post. In 2006-07, he averaged 19.5 points on 57.6 percent shooting from the field.

The Rookies Need to Prove Themselves

With a number of veterans filling up the frontcourt spots already, it could be difficult for Hill to find his way into D’Antoni’s eight- or nine-man rotation right away.

“We see flashes of the guy being very good,” D’Antoni said. “He’s athletic, he’s a great kid and he’s been working hard. But to be able to project that he’ll be better than… we have a lot of guys. We hope he continues his progress and can contribute, but again, he’s a question mark.”

How about Douglas?

“Toney Douglas did not look good in the Summer League I didn’t think,” D’Antoni. “I thought he was OK in the game he had 12 a.ssists and no turnovers, so there was some stuff there. But over the past three weeks he’s looked terrific. He’s coming on everyday, but again, another question mark if he can contribute at all. We’ll see.

“I think both of them have real shots at being really good players in the league at the least, if not great players.”

D’Antoni: Gallinari is the Best Shooter I’ve Ever Seen

If Gallinari returns from the back injury that plagued him throughout his rookie campaign and can do nothing more than spot up from the corner, D’Antoni will take it.

“He’s the best shooter I’ve ever seen,” :agreement6: said D’Antoni of his first draft pick as Knicks head coach.

Playing at just 50 percent, Gallinari helped lead the Knicks to a 14-14 record while shooting an impressive 44.4 percent from long range last season. It is believed that he’s at 100 percent entering camp.

“The bar is high for him to get up there where we want him,” D’Antoni said, “but with a little luck he can get there.”

Gallo Running the Point?

The Knicks could play a lineup that feature five players standing 6-feet-8 or taller. And who better to D up the opposing team’s point guard than 6-10 Gallinari? That doesn’t mean Gallo would be taking the ball up the court, but matching up with a point guard would certainly help get him good looks at the basket.

“I don’t see why we can’t put five guys out there 6-8 or over. We got some guys who can do some things,” D’Antoni said. “We have some interesting things we can try".

Darko Arrives in New York

Milicic, who was acquired from Memphis in exchange for Quentin Richardson on draft day, arrived at the Training Center for the first time on Friday. The 7-footer spent most of the summer in Serbia, where he and his wife, Zorana, celebrated the birth of their first child last June.

The Knicks are in a great position to try to get the best out of the former No. 2 overall pick. And Milicic is at a position in his life to prove that he belongs in the league.

“You see his potential and he’s in a good spot because he just got married and just had a kid,” D’Antoni. “He’s 24, he speaks great English now and he’s comfortable in America. Sometimes you get guys right at the right moment. And he has the talent, I don’t think anybody questions his talent.” :applause:

No Questions About Sun Yue?

With no media members asking about the 6-9 point guard Sun Yue (once nicknamed the Chinese Magic Johnson), D’Antoni took it upon himself to talk about the intriguing prospect who was signed last week.

“You haven’t asked about Sun Yue,” he said. “As a matter of fact, I’m telling you this guy is 6-9 and can play. We’ll see, you know.”

I agree...and i do believe Jeffries will be shed by the deadline without any doubt in my mind. BUT, what some dont realize is that we can use Jeffries or Curry as bait for another superstar via S&T or we can acquire better talent for LONGER contracts.

We'll see how it plays out. As much as I cant wait for this season to start...I cant wait for it to end! Summer 2010!

Eddy Curry has reportedly lost 40 pounds this offseason, but the Knicks aren't setting their expectations too high for the center.

"I think it's going to take him time to get back into a flow," general manager Donnie Walsh told Newsday of Curry.

Curry played in just two games last season because of knee and conditioning problems.

"I'm not expecting anybody to come out of the gate and we all go, 'Wow,' " Walsh added.

Responding to a question about the ability of the Knicks to attract a top free-agent given the team's present roster, Mike D'Antoni expressed the belief that a superstar will be confident he can turn any team into a winner.

“They're going to go where the money is. I would think any superstar would think, 'If I go there, I'll make a difference. I'll win wherever I go,'" D'Antoni said.

Concerning D’Antoni’s first point, the Knicks will not be able to match the maximum contract offer that the free-agent’s current team can make. Donnie Walsh understands this fact.

"They have to want to leave, to a degree, their home team,” Walsh said. “And the home team can always keep them because they are always able to give more money.”

But Walsh also thinks the quality of the roster will not be the only criterion a free-agent will use in deciding whether to sign with the Knicks.

"I think the fact that it's New York plays into it, how good our team is plays into it, that we have a great coach in Mike D'Antoni plays into it," Walsh said.

Bring Skip Home!

Nets guard Rafer Alston expects to begin the season with either the Knicks or Heat, according to a source.

"New York and Miami are the top two teams on Rafer's list," the source told ESPN 1050 in New York. "He can't play in a contract year in New Jersey behind Devin Harris and Keyon Dooling."

Alston was part of the package that the Magic sent to the Nets for Vince Carter back in June.

Because of his expiring contract, Alston is a valuable trade chip.

"(Mike) D'Antoni might be the only coach in the league that would let Rafer be Rafer," the source added.
