New York Knicks

Status: Buyer, sort of
Team Weaknesses: Rebounding, interior defense, foul-drawing
Projected 2010 cap room: $26 million
Untouchables: Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler
Potentially on the block: Jared Jeffries ($6.5 million, one more year), no, I'm not counting Eddy Curry
Expiring Contracts: Larry Hughes ($13.7 million), Al Harrington ($10 million), Cuttino Mobley ($9.5 million, with insurance), Darko Miicic ($7.5 million), David Lee* ($7 million), Chris Duhon ($6 million), Nate Robinson* ($4 million)
Prospects: Jordan Hill, Toney Douglas
Good trade partners: Boston, Chicago, Denver, Houston, LA Clippers, Memphis, Miami, New Jersey, Phoenix, Utah
Possible targets: Tracy McGrady, Ray Allen, Tyrus Thomas, Marcus Camby, Jermaine O'Neal, Amare Stoudemire, Carlos Boozer

The Knicks have a problem. Under normal circumstances, they'd be a seller, because their focus is the future. The goal would be to shed long-term contracts to get even more salary-cap space and position themselves better in the draft lottery. However, because of Isiah Thomas' stupidity, the Knicks don't have a first-round pick this year, which means they have no incentive to tank focus on the future. At the same time, they need to preserve cap space, and they currently only have enough space for one max free agent.

That means they'll look for an upgrade on an expiring contract to help with the "playoff push," all while trying to find a taker for Jared Jeffries (and, if we're honest, Eddy Curry, though that'd require spiking some GM's drink on the eve of the deadline). This is exactly what they did last year, and they ended up with Chris Wilcox and Larry Hughes, so that should tell you how effective their quest will be this year. They were rumored to be close to a Al Harrington/Tyrus Thomas swap with the Bulls a while back, and those talks could rekindle. Otherwise, they could trade for one of those giant expiring contracts like Tracy McGrady in one of those pointless trades designed to make fans happy. Yippee!

Mike D'Antoni said Monday that he will re-insert Chris Duhon into the starting lineup.

After Duhon's lackluster play, D'Antoni named Nate Robinson the team's starting point guard.

In his two-game stint as a starter, Robinson racked up 13 a.ssists against only one turnover. But the Knicks were 0-2 with losses at home versus the Bucks and on the road against the Cavs.

CLEVELAND - Even LeBron James has noticed a trend with the Knicks that has forced Mike D'Antoni to play master mixologist.

"It was two different teams," James said of the Knicks' second-half comeback from a 24-point deficit in a 113-106 loss to the Cavaliers on Saturday night.

Perhaps D'Antoni eventually will get to the point that he tells his players to just play street ball - call your own fouls, even - because it seems they're better at just playing without thinking. It's the most curious thing about this team: The Knicks seem to get more confident as they are getting blown out.

"Once they see one or two of them go in, they start to believe that they're all going to go in without really thinking," James said. "Some of the same shots they missed in the first half they made in the second half."

D'Antoni has said this about Nate Robinson, who scored 23 of his 26 points in that second half, when the Knicks shot 57.1 percent from the field. Before the game, he said that in Friday's loss to the Bucks, Robinson "was thinking too much. He just needs to be aggressive and attack and go."

The 5-9 guard, whom D'Antoni moved into the starting role ahead of Chris Duhon in the last two games, appeared far more comfortable about doing that with Duhon out there as the point guard. And D'Antoni, who never really has committed to going with Robinson as his lead guard, made note of it after the game.

"I think that's our best way to go," he said of the Duhon-Robinson backcourt tandem.

The two played the entire fourth quarter together. Robinson scored nine points and Duhon had four a.ssists, shooting 1-for-3 from the field. He missed a critical three-pointer that could have tied the score at 107 with 3:11 left in the game.

Although his shooting issues are part of the package, Duhon's impact as the only guard on the team who can handle the offense is likely to get him back into the starting lineup soon. Perhaps as soon as Tuesday's game against the Kings, which is the Knicks' last game before the All-Star break.

D'Antoni said he "wouldn't be opposed" to going with Duhon and Robinson together. For most of the season, he has used 6-8 Wilson Chandler, who is not much of a ballhandler or passer, in the shooting guard role. Chandler scored six points against the Cavs and tried to guard James for most of his 35-point explosion in the first half. D'Antoni benched Chandler, David Lee and Danilo Gallinari for the entire fourth quarter.

Notes & quotes: The Knicks will hold practice a little later Monday to allow the staff to attend the morning funeral service for d*ck McGuire at St. Elizabeth Church in Melville.

Nate Robinson was removed from the Knicks starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Kings. Will he remove himself from the Slam Dunk contest this weekend in Dallas?

The 5-9 guard, who could become the NBA’s first three-time dunk champion, sat out Monday’s practice with a strained left groin, which had been nagging him in recent weeks. Mike D’Antoni said Robinson is expected to be available for Tuesday's game, which is the last for the Knicks before the all-star break and would not tell him not to compete in the dunk contest on All-Star Saturday.

“That’s him,” D’Antoni said. “He has to tell me how he feels. If it bothers him, the best thing to do is to rest. But if he’s OK to compete, it’s a fun weekend, the NBA has asked him to do it, he’s the defending [champion], so I can understand why he wants to. But he has to know his body and know what’s best for him.”

One of Robinson’s closest friends, Nets rookie Terrence Williams, wrote on his Twitter account on Sunday that he expected to find out yesterday “if I’m in the dunk contest.” Robinson has promoted Williams as a terrific dunker who deserved to be in the contest.

One possibility is that Williams could be a substitute for an injured contestant, such as Charlotte’s Gerald Wallace, who will also be in Sunday’s all-star game. Wallace is dealing with with a hamstring injury that caused him to miss a game last week.

Robinson accepted the league's invitation to come back for a fourth appearance in the dunk contest, but sounded like the thrill is gone.

"If I don't win it, it would be good because I don't want to go back anymore," he said on Jan. 18.

I have heard that Robinson planned to involve Williams in his dunk plans. But if the groin is enough of an issue, Robinson may have good reason to tell the NBA he can't make it to Dallas and, instead, give his Seattle buddy T-Will an opportunity to show his stuff.

There are conflicting views on how available Marcus Camby actually is depending on the source.

The Clippers are believed to be looking for a player that can help them in 10-11, or cap space to sign a maximum contract free agent this summer.

Denver and New York, two of Camby's previous teams, are both interested in dealing for him.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. - After only two games, Mike D'Antoni didn't like what he saw out of the Nate Robinson Experiment.

"With 19 wins," he said, "I don't like anything right now."

But he does like Chris Duhon running the point a lot more than Robinson in that role. So Tuesday night against the Sacramento Kings, the Knicks' last game before the All-Star break, Duhon will be back in the starting lineup and Robinson will return to the bench as a reserve.

"We function better when Chris is running the team," D'Antoni said Monday after practice at the MSG Training Center. "Obviously, he hasn't played well, but that's the way we're the best."

Robinson had 26 points and was a big part of a comeback from a 24-point deficit in Saturday's loss in Cleveland. But he scored 23 of his points in the second half, most of which he spent as a shooting guard with Duhon running the point.

In Friday's loss to the Bucks, which was Robinson's first start, D'Antoni could see that the 5-9 guard struggled with the responsibilities of being in charge of the offense and getting others involved.

"He's just better as an off guard than he is at point guard," D'Antoni said of Robinson, who did not practice because of a groin strain but should be available Tuesday night. "I think he understands that and I think the team functions better with a true point."

D'Antoni also included a telling remark among his reasons for giving the ball back to Duhon.

"Sometimes a point guard has to make Gallo aggressive," he said in reference to the team's best shooter, Danilo Gallinari, who is averaging eight shots in his last three games after being in double figures in the previous 10. Gallinari has been guilty of being passive and often has gotten lost in the offense, which is the fault of the point guard.

Duhon has a firm grasp of the offense and has the ability to involve other players, but he has hurt the Knicks with his 35.2-percent shooting and his hesitancy to drive to the basket. He admitted Monday that in the final year of his contract, he entered the season putting pressure on himself to perform well. After he got off to a bad start, he paid too much attention to things being said by the fans and the media.

"At some point," he said, "you've got to look in the mirror."

In the meantime, the Knicks will look around the league for alternatives before the Feb. 18 trade deadline.

How can Wilson Chandler have the game of his life, making some of the sickest moves I've seen from his arsenal...and not get him the ball? This team SUCKS!!!

I love how Hill provides energy on d and was becoming a nuisance on the boards, and D'Antoni gives him SIX MINUTES!!!

Danilo Gallinari missed the entire fourth quarter and overtime period of Tuesday's loss to the Kings with a sore right arm, which happens to be the one he shoots with. X-rays taken after the game were negative for any structural damage and Gallinari said it is actually a recurring issue from when he experienced pain in the forearm after he fell into the Magic bench during the Dec. 2 loss in Orlando.

It caused him to miss one game -- Dec. 4 versus Atlanta -- and at the time he said part of the issue was a numbness in his fingertips, which obviously affects his shooting.

He said Tuesday night that he felt his forearm getting weaker as the game went on. Then he airballed a free throw late in the third quarter and he began to flex his wrist.

He left the game with 1:16 left in the quarter and went straight to the locker room for evaluation from the medical staff. Eventually he returned with a heavy wrap over the wrist and Mike D'Antoni was told his best shooter was not available. Just in time for the Kings to switch to a zone defense.

Gallinari didn't seem overly concerned about the injury -- "Maybe I need to get the muscle stronger," he said -- and said he's not even thinking about how it could impact his play in the Rookie Challenge game or the Three-Point Shootout (which he predicted he'd win).

He will get treatment at the MSG Training Center on Wednesday and is planning to depart for Dallas on Thursday.

* * *

* - Nate Robinson played through a left groin strain and plans to also go to Dallas to defend his Slam Dunk title. Robinson, who sat out Monday's practice, said before the game he would see how he feels afterward to decide if he was going to to back out of the contest to rest the injury.

* - Donnie Walsh said he's not going to Dallas for all-star weekend because he feels he can get more work accomplished by remaining in New York and calling other general managers to discuss possible trade scenarios. It used to be all-star weekend was a convention, where GMs could see each other face-to-face, run into each other in the lobby of the hotel and get to talking. But with people scattered in various hotels and countless events going on, the days of mingling with peers are over.

Walsh didn't sound very optimistic that he could work something that would fit into the strict parameters of the 2010 plan (read: does not eat up salary cap space beyond this season) and yet still produce a player who can help the team make the playoffs. With 31 games to go and six games to make up to reach the final playoff berth in the East, the Knicks may as well be sellers to clear out some veterans and allow the young players to get in some quality run over the final six weeks of the season. For instance, does it really make sense at this point to make a desperate play for injured Tracy McGrady if it means giving up Jordan Hill? The question to ask is if McGrady, an expiring contract and a player making a comeback from microfracture surgery, good enough to make that great of a difference in 31 games?

We'll discuss this more here later in the week.

* - I owe Robinson (and Jared Jeffries) an apology. In my game story I take Nate to task for driving on a critical possession late in overtime and kicking the ball out to the team's worst shooter, Jeffries, for a three-pointer. It should be pointed out that Jeffries had made two of three from downtown in the game before that shot and had made 11 of his last 22 from three-point range over the last seven games. And, statistically-speaking, he's not the worst three-point shooter on the team. His percentage from downtown (30.2) is better than Larry Hughes (28.9) and Wilson Chandler (25.9).

But I think we can all respectfully agree that Jared, though he has worked hard on his shooting, is the last player on the court you would draw up a play to get a three-pointer down the stretch in overtime.

The Houston Rockets are in the discussion stages of a complicated, three-team trade that would send Tracy McGrady to the New York Knicks, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The centerpieces of the trade would include the Washington Wizards shipping forward Caron Butler and center Brendan Haywood to the Rockets.

The Knicks would send the expiring contract of Al Harrington to the Wizards.

In order for the deal to work, additional pieces would have to be added.

For the Wizards’ part, they would still need another player, as well as a draft pick and cash to make this a workable scenario, sources said.

Other players and contracts would still need to be agreed upon for a deal to come together, but there is a framework to the discussions.

The Rockets have been peddling McGrady’s expiring contract of $23 million since exiling him in late December.

with Draft Picks being involved most likely, the Knicks can not only shed some contracts (if Jefferies and/or Curry get moved in this deal) they can also end up with picks since we are pretty much the middle man here, Wash want to get rid of Caron's contract and Houston want to rid T-Mac....let's see the Old Man work this s**t out....once Jefferies and Curry are gone, Walsh officially does the important goal, shed all of Isiahs' bad contracts and hit the restart on how we spend our money

A week after losing Hall of Famer d*ck McGuire, the Knicks today mourn the passing of yet another legend, Carl Braun, who died in Florida of natural causes at the age of 82.

Braun is often recalled as the Knicks' first star player. The 6-5 guard averaged 13.5 points per game in his 13-season NBA career, which includes the first two as the BAA and his final season was with the Boston Celtics. He played from 1947-62.

In Dennis D'Agostino's book, "Garden of Glory," McGuire talked about the impact that Braun made when he arrived as a 20-year-old out of Colgate in 1947.

"A very, very good shooter who changed his whole game around for us and became a very good passer," McGuire said. "Scoring was his strength coming out of college. He was a big scorer. But he came here, and we passed the ball, and he became a more-than-adequate passer. He changed his game along the way.

"We backdoored guys an awful lot, me and Carl. He was such a good shooter that he'd fake to come to me on a back door, and it was easy just to throw the pass right through there. And he got where he could do that with other people."

Braun was born in Brooklyn and played his high school ball at Garden City on Long Island. He was a five-time all-star from 1953-57 and currently ranks fifth on the Knicks' all-time scoring list with 10,449 points. He also served as player-coach in 1959-60 and 60-61.

Braun was honored last season as part of Knicks Legends Awards night. Braun was the only one among the group of the franchise's greats in each decade -- McGuire, Richie Guerin, Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, Bernard King and Patrick Ewing -- who was unable to attend the ceremony.

There will be a funeral Tuesday at St. Christopher's Church in Hobe Sound, Fla.

He is the second former Knicks star to die in a week as Hall of Famer d*ck McGuire passed away last Wednesday.

Braun was an All-Star from 1953 to 1957 and retired as the team's career scoring leader with 10,449 points.

He's still in fifth place on New York's career list.

Knicks general manager Donnie Walsh said Tuesday night that he doubts the team can clear more cap space prior to the Feb. 18 trade deadline.

New York is looking to make a deal in the next eight days, namely for a point guard and Tracy McGrady.

Walsh said if a deal is made, it's likely going to an exchange of expiring contracts.

"It's real simple strategy," Walsh said. "You get a good player who doesn't hurt you in the summer and helps you now, you consider it. Depending on who you have to give up, I think there's good players who will be available."
