Garden chairman James Dolan may be willing to release Marbury if the exiled point guard gives back $2 million of his $20.8 salary, WFAN radio reported Wednesday. The station's afternoon host, Mike Francesa, said he gathered that information during a causal conversation with Dolan. The Knicks say that Dolan doesn't recall saying that and reiterated that Dolan has given team president Donnie Walsh the authority to decide Marbury's future. -- NY Daily News

Stephon Marbury may finally get back on the court, but he'll have to fly halfway around the world to do it. According to a report last night by ESPN.com, a team from Greece, Olympiacos, contacted the Knicks yesterday to discuss how to get Marbury out of his contract so they can bring the exiled point guard to the Mediterranean. Knicks president Donnie Walsh did not immediately return a message for comment, nor did Hal Biagas, the NBA players a.ssociation a.ssociate counsel who has been representing Marbury in the buyout talks with the Knicks -- who are owned by Cablevision, which also owns Newsday. Marbury does not have an agent. -- Newsday

The LeBron James-to-the-Knicks in 2010 plan hit a speed bump. In the latest issue of GQ magazine, James takes a subtle shot at the Knicks during a pickup game against five GQ staff members. "They don't play no defense," James is quoted as saying. "They don't play no defense. New York Knicks." -- NY Daily News

The beat writer who covers the Knicks for the New York Post, but who seems to double as a one-man public relations firm representing Stephon Marbury, says that owners of Olympiakos are considering paying the exiled Knicks' guard $15 million.

"I will listen to what they have to say," Marbury wrote in an e-mail to Marc Berman. "I will never close the door that has not been opened."

Donnie Walsh said the interest of Olympiakos is legitimate and Hal Biagas of the NBPA is planning to speak to the team's owners on Marbury's behalf.

Marbury may be intrigued by the international exposure that would come with playing abroad, which could advance his off-the-court pursuits.

It goes without saying that the date for the launch of the new "Starbury" product line, as well as the Web site on which the merchandise will be featured, are included in Berman's blog entry.

Mike D'Antoni said the biggest surprise about Danilo Gallinari's game is his ability to cover the perimeter and competently defend two-guards and small-forwards.

"If he can do that, then he can play on the perimeter," D'Antoni said. "That just helps us that much more."

Gallinari is 20 years of age, listed at 6'10" and 225 pounds. He is expected to grower taller and stronger which could enable him to bang inside. Once that happens, D'Antoni expects Gallinari to be able to play three or four positions.

D'Antoni admitted that he at first a.ssumed Gallinari would be the standard all-offense, no-defense European player, "because you make generalizations, which you shouldn't."

D'Antoni sees Gallinari's basketball IQ also translating on the defensive end. "[H]e has shown he knows angles, he can use his length. And he'll get stronger. There's no reason why he can't become a good defender on the perimeter, which, if he can do that and inside, then you've got a heck of a player."

Olympiakos, the Greek team that has been linked to Stephon Marbury, is actually interested in a player with European experience, not a point guard that has spent his entire career in the NBA.

Owners of Olympiakos told agents Thursday that they want to sign a combo guard who has played in Europe before.

The Greek team that has been linked to Stephon Marbury actually is in the market for a player with extensive European experience, not one who has spent his entire career in the NBA. Owners of Athens-based Olympiakos, which is looking for a replacement for ex-Hawks forward Josh Childress, who is out for up to two months with a sports hernia injury, told Greek and American-based agents yesterday that they want to sign a combination guard who has played in Europe. Along those lines, Olympiakos Thursday rejected an overture from veteran guard and free agent Troy Hudson, formerly with Golden State, Minnesota and several other NBA teams, based on his lack of European playing experience. That would be just one of the obstacles preventing Marbury from going to Olympiakos, whose owners are nonetheless said to be thrilled that their team has been mentioned in the U.S. media as a potential destination for the exiled Knick. -- NY Daily News

Last week Mike D'Antoni mentioned David Lee as a possible All-Star, and with his performance, he's simply raising his stock for the upcoming offseason. A restricted free agent, Lee probably is putting the Knicks in a position where they will have to match another team's offer. -- NY Post

Mike D'Antoni was thrilled to see Nate Robinson break out of his shooting slump Wednesday, but not so pleased with his behavior. Robinson -- who was on the bench at the time -- celebrated a second-quarter David Lee dunk by skipping down the baseline and bumping the Suns' Amare Stoudemire, who had fouled Lee on the play. Robinson was a.ssessed a technical foul, his sixth of the season. "To be honest with you, that's why you don't have concealed weapons, because I'd have shot him at that point," D'Antoni said wryly. "I do like his feistiness, but he just needs to channel it in the right way. And he knows that." -- NY Times

The Knicks still have a major contract decision to make on David Lee, who will be a restricted free agent this summer. But there is little doubt now that Lee can thrive in Mike D'Antoni's offense, and that he can play in tandem with Danilo Gallinari. Lee is effective as a strong, but undersize, power forward and center. Gallinari, taller but thinner, is playing exclusively on the wings. Both are capable passers who do not demand or dominate the ball. The two can play well together "without a doubt," D'Antoni said. -- NY Times

The mother of Eddy Curry's son and her infant daughter were found slain on the South Side of Chicago on Saturday, the Chicago Tribune is reporting.

Police are searching for a "known acquaintance" of the woman in connection with the homicides.

Curry was in Philadelphia Saturday for a game. He was back in New York later that evening, distraught and contemplating a trip to Chicago, the source said.

Marc Berman from the New York Post is reporting that the Knicks' medical staff have decided to shut down Danilo Gallinari for the second game of back to backs for the time being.

Gallinari will not be in uniform tonight against Philadelphia.

The Knicks New York Knicks are being cautious because of a bulging disc that first emerged in early July and cost the rookie most of the summer league, all of preseason and the last 2 1/2 months.

Both the New York Knicks and Euroleague club Olympiakos are interested in former NBA guard Jannero Pargo, the New York Daily News is reporting.

Pargo signed with Dynamo Moscow last summer after helping New Orleans reach the second round of the playoffs. Olympiakos is hoping to have Pargo's deal done by Tuesday, when Euroleague rosters are finalized.

Olympiakos expressed passing interest in Marbury, who was exiled by the Knicks on Dec.1 and is still earning his $20.9 million salary. Knicks president Donnie Walsh is hopeful that he can trade Marbury before the Feb.19 deadline. If a trade doesn't happen, the Knicks can release Marbury or keep him on the roster until the end of the season.

New York Knicks' coach Mike D'Antoni, said he called Marc Iavaroni on Friday, but the pair didn't discuss a reunion.

When asked by New York media whether the Knicks are in Iavaroni's future, D'Antoni said that wouldn't happen anytime soon.

"Not now, D'Antoni said. "It's way too early (to consider). I wouldn't be ever against it because he's a great coach."

The Knicks are looking for another guard and get frustrated with Nate Robinson at times, but rival general managers doubt they'll trade one of their most popular players.

"I know they want a guard and I know Nate drives them crazy," said one GM. "But I'm not sure if they'll trade him."

The banished Stephon Marbury acknowledged for the first time yesterday he has a verbal commitment from the Celtics - and accused the Knicks of not accepting his latest buyout offer because they don't want him winning a championship in Boston. A frustrated Marbury said the Knicks were playing "kids games," adding "It's got to be personal." In an hourlong interview with The Post, Marbury also said another NBA team has made an overture toward him. Miami is known to have expressed interest. "I know I'll be able to sign with two teams," Marbury told The Post. "The question to be asked to the Knicks is: Are they fearful for me playing for another Eastern Conference team? My thing is, they shouldn't be fearful. They're trying to get under the cap for 2010. They shouldn't be worried about me. You had guys saying I was a distraction, I'm a cancer. If I'm all those things, wouldn't you want me to go to another team?" President Donnie Walsh may wait until after their final meeting with Boston, Feb. 6 at the Garden, though the teams could meet in the first round. Marbury, who returned from training in Los Angeles last week, said he also wonders if Walsh will not act until March 2, when Marbury would be ineligible for a playoff roster. The chances of trading Marbury at the Feb. 19 deadline are beyond slim. -- NY Post
