NOTEBOOK: Gallinari's bad back improving

BY ALAN HAHN |
December 22, 2008

BOSTON - Danilo Gallinari slowly and quietly has been making steady progress as he recovers from a lingering back injury that has shelved the lottery pick for most of his rookie season. His running and shooting workouts have intensified, but the Knicks will continue to proceed cautiously with the 20-year-old, who suffered a bulging disc during the summer.

"I think he's getting better," Mike D'Antoni said. "But said give it a couple more weeks to make sure."

After Gallinari met with several back specialists last month, the collective a.ssessment was that he needed rest, not surgery. A time frame of six to eight weeks was given, meaning he could return sometime in January.

D'Antoni said Eddy Curry, who hasn't played this season because of a bone bruise in his left leg, is "improving" and is "close" to getting on the court. "I would think within the next two or three weeks, he should be able to," D'Antoni said. "They say a couple weeks start practicing, then playing soon, but that may be wishful thinking."

No rush to fill spot

Until the NBA rules on the Knicks' appeal to get a disabled player exception - which would be worth up to $4.4 million - for the roster spot that opened after Cuttino Mobley's retirement, the Knicks won't sign a player to replace Mobley.

"We just don't want to do something rash," D'Antoni said. "There's really no sense in doing something rash right now."

A possibility is Patrick Ewing Jr., who is playing in the D-League for Reno, a shared affiliate of the Knicks and Kings. Teams can sign players to 10-day contracts starting Jan. 5, but Ewing is more likely to fill a spot if and when Stephon Marbury is bought out.

Knicks General Manager Donnie Walsh could miss on LeBron James and still revive the franchise in 2010, just by being in the market again. The possibilities are intriguing: Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh? Joe Johnson and Amare Stoudemire? Michael Redd, Tyson Chandler and Steve Nash? As Walsh said the day he was hired as the Knicks' team president last spring, having cap space "would be a monstrous thing" for the franchise. "You can turn something over overnight in a lot of ways if you can manage the cap the right way now," he said. -- NY Times

The Knicks and Raptors haven't discussed a trade in months, according to an executive familiar with both teams' plans.

This comes on the heels of Sam Smith floating the trade idea of Stephon Marbury and Eddy Curry to Toronto for Jermaine O'Neal and Anthony Parker.

Berger does report that Bryan Colangelo has been eager to make a trade.

MAKE THIS sh*t HAPPEN.....if this happened, we pretty much have 25 mill coming off the books

It doesn't look like Stephon Marbury will be receiving a $20.9 million Christmas present from the Knicks. The banished point guard likely will remain on the roster until the calendar flips to 2009, at which point the Knicks are expected to release him. "I don't know if it's imminent, but I think we're continuing to try to see if we can come to an understanding," Knicks president Donnie Walsh said Monday. "I'm always hopeful something can get worked out. It's in his interest, it's in our interest. We're not taking it lightly and Stephon not's taking it lightly." Walsh refused to comment on Marbury's decision to attend last week's game in Los Angeles. Walsh had ordered Marbury to stay away from the team until his future is resolved. Marbury claims that several teams are interested in signing him once he is released. -- NY Daily News

The record indicates that the Knicks are on a pace for another 33-win season, a modest total they've reached in two of the past four campaigns. But with one-third of the season complete, Mike D'Antoni believes that the Knicks are better than their 11-16 record and that they'll get better results over the next four months. Not even an ugly loss to the Boston Celtics on Sunday could curb D'Antoni's optimism. While the defending NBA champs are a lock to make the playoffs, the Knicks, according to D'Antoni, have the next six weeks to demonstrate that they also can qualify for the first time in five years. "The schedule is kinda in our favor," D'Antoni said. "Now we have to make up some ground. And if we do that, we'll have a good shot. This next month and a half is going to be a telling point." -- NY Daily News

The Knicks are expected to release Stephon Marbury after the calendar rolls over to 2009. The question is when exactly.

"I don't know if it's imminent, but I think we're continuing to try to see if we can come to an understanding," Donnie Walsh said on Monday. "I'm always hopeful something can get worked out. It's in his interest, it's in our interest. We're not taking it lightly and Stephon's not taking it lightly."

Danilo Gallinari, the sixth pick in the 2008 draft, went through an individual workout on Monday and Mike D'Antoni said Gallinari will be re-evaluated in two or three weeks.

"We'll see what his therapy does," D'Antoni said. "If he's ready to go in two or three weeks we're doing it. If not, they'll have to think about another strategy."

Eddy Curry has yet to play a single second this season, but that could all change in the next weeks, the New York Post are reporting.

Curry confirmed he is on track to join the team full tilt in practice in a little more than a week. After that, "It's up to the coach when he thinks I'm ready to play," he said.

The Knicks have made no secret that trading Eddy Curry would enhance their prospects of signing two major free agents in the summer of 2010. Charlotte has expressed interest in Curry, and people close to the Knicks center say that he would welcome a change of address. "I don't know what's going to happen," Curry said. When asked about the Bobcats, Curry only said, "I enjoyed playing for Larry (Brown) when he was here." Two weeks ago, Charlotte acquired Boris Diaw and Raja Bell from Phoenix, and the thinking among some NBA executives is that both players will eventually be shipped to New York in a deal for Curry and possibly David Lee. -- NY Daily News

The Knicks, who are owned by Cablevision, which also owns Newsday, can use the exception to sign a free agent, such as a player in Europe. They could make a play for 6-6 shooting guard Carlos Delfino, who is playing in Russia and technically still is property of the Toronto Raptors. The Knicks could sign Delfino to an offer sheet and hope the Raptors don't match. -- Newsday

Al Harrington doesn't want to be a shooting guard trapped inside a power forward's body. In fact, the Knicks' 6-9 forward believes he is relying too heavily on three-point shots and is re-committing himself to scoring inside first before drifting outside. "At this point now when I play my next game I've got to start inside out," Harrington said. "I just can't rely on shooting threes to start the game off. I've got to know how I got here. 'sometimes you've got to start with a two, get a couple of twos and then step outside. I've been hovering the line too much. You miss four, five in a row, you start thinking about it a little bit and it affects your whole game." -- NY Daily News
