A year ago, Eddy Curry was the center of the New York Knicks franchise, both literally and figuratively.

This season? Not even close.

Curry

New Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said he doesn't plan to play Curry in the team's season opener Wednesday against the Miami Heat, simply responding "no" when asked Tuesday if Curry would be part of his eight- or nine-man rotation.

Curry's minutes were limited in the preseason after he missed all of training camp because of a bacterial infection, and D'Antoni said he could have a hard time playing catch-up. D'Antoni also has not appeared confident with how Curry would fit in his high-tempo offense.

After playing in four of the seven Knicks' preseason games (including one DNP/coach's decision), Curry was surprised by the news that he is not part of his coach's regular rotation.

"Definitely stunned, especially being that [D'Antoni] didn't tell me that," Curry said Tuesday. "I haven't talked to him. I'm here with him every day. All he has to do is tell me. I'm definitely stunned to hear that."

Last season, the 25-year-old Curry averaged 13.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. During the preseason, he averaged 4.3 points and 2.5 boards in nearly 14 minutes.

Curry thinks he can play in D'Antoni's system, which emphasizes quick shots and working the ball on the perimeter.

"I don't need [the ball] to go through me," Curry said. "I don't need it to be my team."

D'Antoni said minutes were earned during practice and the preseason, though he may make an exception for first-round draft pick Danilo Gallinari. Gallinari, who has a bad back, did not play in any of the team's preseason games, but D'Antoni may give him some minutes in Wednesday's opener.

Such a scenario was not lost on Curry.

"You can't help but to think about that, especially [since] I feel like I'm in pretty good shape," Curry said. "Hopefully I can contribute and, if not, I will cheer my team on and see what the Knicks' plan is."
dont expect to see eddy tommorow....

glad to see gallo in the lineup but i doubt he'll get some real burn... mike d is still gonna shelter him. he's still not 100% in game shape

t/m will prob be a more along the lines of a 10 man lineup, add steph to that list

Two NBA sources claim that Al Harrington has asked the Warriors to trade him because he doesn't want to play for coach Don Nelson anymore.

He reportedly wants to be traded as soon as possible, but will not walk out on Golden State, who opens their season on Wednesday night.

One source with knowledge of the situation said that Harrington’s agent, Dan Fegan, is "actively working to get (Harrington) out of there" and that a few teams already have proposed tentative deals.

FYI, Harrington's contract is expiring 9 mill and the Warriors have 14 players (hint hint, could give em 2 dudes)

should we make that move and for who

yes we should make that move...

eddy and harrington's yearly salaries match-up... harrington is a runnig big man and playing in d'antoni's system would work a lot better than eddy.

i wish we could give them 2, so we could get harrington and resign PE2 but no other salaries would match up. but eddy for al sounds verrrry good

Starbury fuels the Obama Express

Our jack-of-all-trades staffer Anthony Rieber filed this column for today's Newsday about how Stephon Marbury is the only high-profile New York pro athlete to throw his support to one of the presidential candidates. Starbury's choice is Barack Obama.

Now, how can the McCain campaign use this against the Senator from Illinois...hmmm...Tucker Bounds, have ya seen the 'youtube' on that world wide web thing on that computer ya got there?

It would be too easy of a skit for Saturday Night Live, if only their political comedy was, you know, unbiased. Perhaps there's just nothing funny about Obama.

What about those ears? I mean how can you vote for a president with such funny-looking ears?

[Bloghost note: Now before you political types get all Janeane Garofalo on my a.., take heed that I'm still quite undecided and will be until Tuesday morning. And, quite frankly, my choice is my choice and not something I plan on promoting or even discussing here.]

Getting back to the point, Riebs quotes Stephon saying something multi-millionaires (athletes or not) can easily say but only a few would actually mean. Stephon's words come off as genuine because we know he does know what poverty is and he obviously know what excess is.

Sharing the wealth may be a "socialist tenet," but it also can be considered a moral virtue.

"By him trying to create change and by him trying to spread the wealth as opposed to the rich getting rich and the poor staying poor, he's trying to make it diverse and I believe in that," Marbury told Newsday.

"I pay taxes just like everybody else - half of my money goes to taxes - and I feel like it should go to the people who need it. Me coming from where I come from, I'm aware of the situation that people are in right now, coming from Coney Island and the projects. Me having what I have is a blessing."

We may not agree on the basketball court, but here is something I applaud.

Minutes Men

The honeymoon's over for Mike D'Antoni. Oh that first week in Saratoga Springs was so pure and idealistic. The optimism rose like Wilson Chandler over Jermaine O'Neal.

[Ooh, that dunk was nasty, wasn't it?]

But here's where we get down to business. Where the daily grind will show true character. The roster moves were mostly a joint process with D'Antoni and Donnie Walsh. But the lineup, the rotation and, most of all, those precious minutes? That's all on Mike.

So here we go.

For opening night tomorrow against the Heat, the Knicks will start like this:
PG - Duhon
SG - Crawford
SF - Richardson
PF - Lee
C - Randolph

First two off the bench will be Nate Robinson and Wilson Chandler. First big off the bench will be Malik Rose (more on that in a minute). At my count, that's eight. D'Antoni is known to play as few as eight and only as many as nine in the regular season.

We know rookie Danilo Gallinari will get a his first taste in this game. Don't expect him to get a ton of time, but if he's looking as comfortable as he has in the practice scrimmages, you never know. D'Antoni is concerned with exposing Gallinari to the home crowd and the bright lights of opening night. It'll be the kid's first taste of an NBA game since the summer league back in July. Kind of asking a lot.

OK, so if that's nine . . . who are we leaving out?

Right. As John McCain would say, "That one."

Stephon Marbury is on this roster and is certainly talented enough to provide scoring for the Knicks, who are going to need it. And I'm not at all suggesting that Marbury doesn't play (or shouldn't for that matter). What I am saying is where do you play him in this rotation -- where in the regular season, starters such as Duhon and Crawford are going to get 35-to-38 minutes a game -- and will he be effective as someone who only gets 10 to 14 minutes per game? Do you get more out of playing Mardy Collins in those minutes, especially because, as a big guard, he can defend the likes of Dwyane Wade?

I know, Mardy over Marbury? Bloghost are you out of your freaking mind serious?

Hey, D'Antoni is right now playing Rose over Eddy Curry. He made that clear today after practice when he said Curry is not in his rotation plans right now. That was news to Eddy.

Couldn't help but notice that Anthony Roberson saw a lot more time in the practice scrimmage today than we've seen of him during the preseason. Then again, maybe I'm just noticing him a lot more now. Despite this, he'll be among the inactives tomorrow, along with injured Jared Jeffries and the most expensive practice player in the NBA, Jerome James.

Gone by 2010: Stephon Marbury, Jerome James, Malik Rose, Quentin Richardson, Mardy Collins and Roberson.

One foot out the door: Nate Robinson, Wilson Chandler and Duhon.

Keepers (maybe): Danilo Gallinari and David Lee.

NY Daily News

daily news always find a way to say something stupid...

Salary-cap anchors (with commitments through 2010-11): Zach Randolph, Eddy Curry, Jamal Crawford and Jared Jeffries.

In terms of what this group can do, D'Antoni isn't buying gloom and doom, nor is he making room for the underachieving Curry, who he announced yesterday would not be part of the Knicks' 10-man rotation.

if chandler is fine, we shoot well, and don't turn the ball over a lot, we just might win :dancingcool:.... w/ home court advantage too

miami doesn't have any true inside scorers, so we can focus on stopping d-wade and marion's drives....
