The Knicks are optimistic about the addition of Darko Milicic, but are realistic at the same time.

"There's three or four coaching staffs that really haven't gotten anything [out of Milicic], so we're not saying, 'Oh we can," Mike D'Antoni said. "Just sometimes in a person's career it's the right time. He's having a kid, he's married, maybe he's settled down. He's in the last year of a contract. We'll get the best out of him that he has. Is it good enough? We don't know.

"It's a shot in the dark."

"It's low risk, high reward," his New York-based agent, Marc Cornstein, told The Post on Sunday. "There is a reason he was drafted where he was drafted. Now it's a matter of will we see it? It remains to be seen, but I'm optimistic off this situation."

Milicic, who hasn't adapted well to U.S. living, now is surrounded by a larger support system, featuring Cornstein and a European-style head coach. But one NBA executive whose franchise had Milicic said: "He's been in the league six seasons. He is what he is."

Cornstein disagrees.

"We're thrilled on so many levels," he said. "I'm excited to have him in my hometown, personally and selfishly. We've known him for a long time and are very close to him. On a basketball level, we're more thrilled. Coach D'Antoni is the ideal coach for him. He has a great understanding of European players and how to utilize his skill sets and talents."

The Lakers and Kings appear to be the front runners to land guard Nate Robinson, a restricted free agent of the Knicks.

Sacramento was reportedly close to swinging a deal that involved Robinson and Jared Jeffries at February's trading deadline, but talks between the Kings and Knicks fell through.

It's possible that the two teams could rekindle talks this summer.

The Lakers was rumored to have inquired about Robinson after he scored 33 points at the Staples Center in December, and both Kobe Bryant and Jerry Buss gushed about the guard after the mid-December game.

Thanks man. I took a little break because of the baby but I'm back. I'm probably going to wait a few summer league games before I make a Hill mix. With the addition of Douglas and Hill I really doubt that Lee or Nate will be resigned. Donnie Walsh also tried to trade Chandler on draft night so have to wonder how long Chandler will be wearing a Knicks uniform.

All that being said Douglas can ball. The kid has a nice handle and shoot the big shot.

Jason Kidd plans to meet with Knicks officials Wednesday morning, opening day of the free agent recruiting period. A league source told the Daily News Monday night that Kidd is scheduled to sit down with Knicks president Donnie Walsh and head coach Mike D'Antoni early Wednesday. Kidd said in January that he would strongly consider signing with the Knicks. It is believed that Kidd also will talk to the Portland Trail Blazers.-- NY Daily News

David Lee will be the greater commodity. He led the N.B.A. last season in double-doubles, with 65, and averaged career bests in scoring (16 points a game) and rebounding (11.7). He will most likely draw interest from at least three of the teams with major salary cap space -- Detroit, Oklahoma City and Portland. -- NY Times

Nate Robinson became one of the league's top sixth men, averaging a career-high 17.2 points and 4.1 a.ssists. His showmanship and flair also made Robinson one of the most marketable players in the league, which could make him attractive to a number of box office-conscious teams. The Knicks were unwilling to meet the demands of each player last summer, when Lee was seeking about $10 million a year and Robinson about $6 million. The poor economy and a tight market -- only four teams have major cap space -- should work in the Knicks' favor. -- NY Times

The Knicks also have a strong interest in Jason Kidd, the 36-year-old Dallas Mavericks point guard and former Nets star. Kidd, who still has an off-season home in New York, could be tempted. The Knicks have only the midlevel exception (about $5.6 million) to spend, however, and they will probably offer only a one-year deal. The Mavericks could easily top that, so the flirtation may be brief. -- NY Times

The Knicks plan to meet with free-agent point guard Jason Kidd on Wednesday.

Kidd is scheduled to meet with New York president Donnie Walsh and coach Mike D'Antoni early Wednesday, according to a league source.

He is expected to talk with the Mavericks before meeting with the Knicks in order to give them the first chance to re-sign him.

The Knicks could offer Kidd their mid-level exception, or work a sign-and-trade with Dallas.

Nate Robinson may accept the Knicks' qualifying offer and return to New York for at least one more season.

The decision would make Robinson an unrestricted free-agent in the summer of 2010 when several marquee players are expected to be on the market.

anyway...

you must of missed this...

EW2 News....

The Knicks have yet to finalize the roster for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, but one name that we did hear to be among the players expected to be there is Patrick Ewing, Jr.

The 6-6 forward was the final cut by the Knicks at the end of training camp and spent the season with Reno of the D-League. He injured his knee in March and did not finish the season. The hope is he will be ready to play in time for the first game, which is July 14 against Hasheem Thabeet and the Grizzlies.

Here's the schedule for those who wish to tune in to see Ewing Jr., or, of course, first round picks Jordan Hill and Toney Douglas.

Another player apparently on the roster is UNLV guard Wink Adams. I've heard soon-to-be former Clipper Alex Acker, who becomes a free agent tomorrow, is also a player the Knicks hope to have on Vegas for a long look.

The Knicks affiliation this season is now with a new team, the Springfield Armor. They share that team with the Nets and 76ers. The Knicks are still considering their own D-League team in the future, with Harlem as a potential site. But there has been no progress made on that front.

could we possibly find a way to send eddy curry to ok. city?? they have a great young core but are really weak up front...i think eddy curry could potentially fit in there greatly...we should really get rid of him just to save money...f*ck trying to get anything of value in return for him...i think it could work financially for them as well as they have a ton of rookie contracts and nothing major in terms of impending extensions since they are so young

A source told Ken Berger that he believes David Lee's days as a Knick are over. Agent Mark Bartelstein will reportedly have Lee sign an offer sheet with the Grizzlies or Thunder that the Knicks will not be willing to match.

"It's a tough loss for New York, but they don't want to screw up their 2010 plan," the source said.

The Rockets could provide the Knicks with some additional 2010 cap space by taking on Eddy Curry.

Daryl Morey, according to a source, would be interested in discussing a Tracy McGrady for Curry ($10.5M) and Cuttino Mobely ($9M, 80 percent) swap.

I agree... then our plans for 2010 are SET. Eddy could have done well in our system, but would thrive much more so in Houston. Especially since Yao is behind schedule. Plus Adelman knows how to get a lot out of players. Eddy could shift to PF even when Yao comes back, but they need a big man. Period.

My wishlist = Jefferies, Curry, and Cuttino for T-Mac, Chase Budinger / James White, 2010 1st and 2nd rounders. (I know, I know, contracts don't add up.... but it's my pipe dream to kick off this rumor.)

Stephon Marbury, who becomes a free agent again today, believes star players should be cautious about signing with the Knicks because of Mike D'Antoni's offensive scheme and the way the organization treats people. "I wouldn't want to play in that system,'' Marbury told The Post. "That system can't win championships. You can't win championships if you don't talk about defense. In Boston, the coaches even play defense.'' Marbury said he believes being exiled for four months "mentally damaged'' him and affected his Boston performance. -- NY Post
