Phil Jackson Calls Shaq "Lazy" and Exposes D-Wade

Jackson's comments may have reignited feud

It wouldn't be Christmas without a Shaq-Kobe feud, and now it seems Phil Jackson wants in on the tradition.

Shaquille O'Neal
O'Neal
Jackson, who once upon a time seemed to favor his star center over his star shooting guard, on Sunday called out O'Neal, saying he was "the only person I've ever had that hasn't been a worker."

Shaq, who is rarely at a loss for words, was asked about Jackson's comments on Monday following Miami's 101-85 win over O'Neal's former team.

"How can Benedict Arnold be reliable in what he says?" the Big Aristotle was quoted as saying in Tuesday's edition of The Los Angeles Times. O'Neal declined to elaborate on his statement and, since he was in street clothes for the game, was not required to give a formal post-game interview.

O'Neal and Bryant had been feuding since O'Neal's trade to Miami following the 2003-04 season. But last year the two superstars stated publicly that they had reconciled their differences.

Then came Jackson's comments on Sunday.

"He's the one guy that didn't really like to work," said the coach who boasts nine NBA championship rings. "I know Pat [Riley] got him working here in Miami. We had a hard time getting him to work. All the other players -- Michael [Jordan], Scottie [Pippen], Dennis Rodman, all those guys that we had, Horace Grant, they're all hard-working practice and personal work players."

Of course, O'Neal was not the only player Jackson prodded. Speaking about Dwyane Wade, Shaq's new partner in crime and last year's NBA Finals MVP, Jackson said, "He travels on that spin move. He picks up that pivot foot … everybody knows it. Dwyane Wade can cover so much ground when he makes that move. As you know, he can go 20 feet with that spin move and get to the basket."

While Jackson's comments are sure to refuel a media frenzy that was threatening to die down, it did little to help his team, which has lost three of five.

Jackson gets O'Neal into war of words

MIAMI – Someone forgot to tell Phil Jackson that you don't have to pick sides between Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal anymore.

But being an inherent pot-stirrer, Jackson answered an innocuous question Saturday about Bryant's work ethic by bringing up how O'Neal was "the one guy that didn't really like to work" in Jackson's coaching career.

O'Neal responded Sunday by calling Jackson "Benedict Arnold."

O'Neal trotted out the famous traitor's name before the Lakers-Heat game and liked it so much that he threw it out for mass consumption to more reporters afterward.

"How can Benedict Arnold be reliable in what he says?" O'Neal asked.

When Jackson was told the name O'Neal was calling him, the Lakers' coach O'Neal used to call "my white father" was amused.

It is no surprise that O'Neal still is talking smack, even though he has been dodging the media while idled after knee surgery. (Sunday was just the third time he has spoken to reporters in any capacity since knee surgery more than five weeks ago.)

The thing about O'Neal is that there is always some piece of his heart in the trash that he talks. He is sensitive and is fully aware that there's no denying two things:

Jackson came back to the Lakers to coach Bryant, Jackson explaining it just the other day in this way: "I just knew his intensity, his dedication to winning, all those things were a plus for a basketball team."

And while Jackson and Bryant have grown close, Jackson and O'Neal have grown apart. Jackson has not even spoken to O'Neal since he won his first Jackson-less championship last spring.

All Jackson did, he said, was send "a message through with his people" because O'Neal had been squawking loudly about his Miami championship being the best one. O'Neal also made some comments ranking Pat Riley above Jackson among coaches.

"I told him not to forget," Jackson said of his message to O'Neal. "He was saying how happy he was, and 'it was the greatest' and everything. I said not to forget. Sometimes it's easy to overlook how happy he was in 2000, 2001 and 2002."

But Jackson added with a laugh that he knew it to be O'Neal's nature to "love the one you're with."

This was Jackson's comment Saturday: "The only person I've ever had that hasn't been a worker in the fortunate times I've been coaching is probably Shaq. He's the one guy that didn't really like to work. I know Pat's got him working here in Miami, but we had a hard time getting him to work.

"All the other players - Michael (Jordan), Scottie (Pippen), Dennis Rodman, all those guys we had, Horace Grant - they were all hard-working practice and personal-work players."

It was an unprompted shot, but it also is undeniably true. O'Neal is a freak of nature who could have been better than Jordan or Wilt Chamberlain if he had a will to work for it. When friends said that to O'Neal during his Lakers years, he would view it as betrayal - the hardest work O'Neal did in his life was apparently the day he learned about Benedict Arnold in sixth-grade history class - not encouragement.

Jackson was the leader of the prodders and got one NBA MVP season out of O'Neal in 2000. Jackson's pleas for more were ignored, though.

Jackson acknowledged Sunday that he thought O'Neal could have given more and that multiple MVP seasons were "the kind of game that he could play." But Jackson chose to offer appreciation for what O'Neal did give him between Krispy Kremes.

"MVPs kind of pale behind all that when championships are won," Jackson said.

Where O'Neal goes from here is sketchy. When Bryant asked before the game if I had seen the Heat's newly and lavishly redecorated locker room (and suggested he was going to go have a word with Staples Center emperor Philip Anschutz about what the Lakers can do to upgrade their place), I headed over there and saw O'Neal.

He was in workout shorts - though can they be called "workout shorts" when he was not working out and had not been working out? - and it was more than a little shocking to see how atrophied O'Neal's legs have gotten during the time he hasn't been running.

O'Neal still does have the magical Wade at his side, so who knows? But one other thing Jackson said before the game was that the NBA was pushing the stardom of Wade, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony to market to kids.

But "for us adults," Jackson said, "there's a certain sense that Bryant has the spot where he has the best overall game in this crew - and that has been my conviction."

Benedict has sure got Bryant's back these days. Maybe Jackson will even push baby Gianna's stroller when the Bryants hit Disney World at 6 p.m. today.

And just in case you think O'Neal doesn't care, guess who was standing outside the Heat's huddle during timeouts Monday staring down the sideline at the Lakers huddle, eager to see just what's up?

Damn, I agree with Phil's comments, Shaq is lazy as fu*k. Reporters say it all the time, he only shows up during the playoffs, but Phil shouldn't be saying this sh*t. Why bother? We got owned yesterday, let's just get them back in January. We have a better record in a tougher conference. There's no need for jealousy in Lakerland.

That says it all, and before you call me some kind of Kobe Stan look inside youself and say with a straight face that Wade has a better jumper or plays better defense.
