Austin (TX) St. Andrew's Episcopal School QB Preston Dewey made a telephone call to Hurricane coaches at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

He had some big news.

"I want to be part of the family," Dewey told UM Offensive Coordinator Jedd Fisch. "I want to commit to the University of Miami."

Fisch let out a yell.

"He was pretty ecstatic," Dewey said. "They told me that I will have a chance to compete to start for three to four years. I will compete my hardest."

Dewey is Miami's third quarterback commitment for the 2012 class, joining Gray Crow and David Thompson. Like Crow, he is working to enroll at UM in January.

"They both are great quarterbacks," Dewey said. "Wherever you go, you have to compete."

Dewey said he hears comparisons to his high school coach Ty Detmer.

"I can see it," Dewey said. "But coach won't tell me that."

For his part, Detmer says the Canes have landed a great one.

"Fundamentally he's real sound," Detmer. "He throws a real accurate ball. He's the type of kid we didn't offer a whole lot of protection for in the last year - he throws it under pressure. He's got real good mechanics.

"He's a real pro-style quarterback. He'll move around enough to buy time and create and is looking to throw it. I think we'll see another big jump from him this year. We're looking for good things from him."

Dewey says that Detmer "Pushed me to make sure I perform at an elite level. He tells me where I need to be, and I'm not far from it."

Dewey worked out at the Al Golden Football Camp last weekend and his time there helped convince him to commit. His other finalists were North Carolina and Tennessee.

"After my visit I just wanted to think about it, but I kept coming back to Miami," Dewey said. "I was really seeing myself there for four to five years. So I decided to pull the trigger."

Dewey's father, Mike, said that on the UM visit "we met with (Donna) Shalala and (Al) Golden - that's a group of people you can feel comfortable sending your son to. That's the U. We were very impressed with the school, facilities."

Dewey finished his junior season throwing for 1,500 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 200 yards and another score.

His goals at Miami?

"I want to get them back to winning championships," Dewey said.

I felt very comfortable and I also looked at how many players they put into then NFL DB wise. It was the best fit for me." Kevin Olsen is a beast

• ESPN’s Tom Luginbill said UM’s newest 2012 oral commitment, Austin, Texas-based pro-style quarterback Preston Dewey, is “very accurate with a very high ceiling.” Coached by Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer, Dewey chose UM over North Carolina, Tennessee and UCLA.

UM also covets 6-3 junior-to-be quarterback Kevin Olsen, brother of former UM tight end Greg Olsen. “We have interest in Miami — the offense is a good fit,” said Chris Olsen, Kevin’s father and high school coach in Wayne Hills, N.J. “Kevin is attending Al Golden’s camp this weekend.”

UM, FSU, Notre Dame and others have offered Olsen, who threw 17 touchdown passes and four interceptions and led his school to a state title. … UM is up to 12 oral commitments for 2012, with Miami Norland offensive lineman Ereck Flowers and Miami American cornerback Larry Hope among the most recent.

Miami Beach High School standout athlete Ricardo Louis pulled the trigger for Auburn at the end of last month, calling it a done deal at that time.

But now he's not so sure.

"Miami still has a chance," Louis said. "I committed a little early, didn't have time to think about any other schools. So I'm still open to other schools.

"When I first committed I was committed committed. But now that I've thought about it I'm going to stay open just in case I made the wrong decision."

He reiterates that he still considers himself an Auburn commitment, adding that "When I went to Aujburn I wasn't expecting to commit. I was expecting to commit somewhere during the season, at the Under Armour game. It just happened."

Why did Louis decide to consider other schools?

"I did a lot of research, took time to think about it, said `Okay, let's keep it wide open,'" he said. "It's all on me."

He says of UM that "Miami is very diverse - their coaches turned the program around at Temple, so they should be great.

"Miami coaches know I'm still considering them. They asked me to come to their camps - I might go to the next one."

Louis says that Ohio State, Alabama LSU and Florida State also remain in his picture.

So when will he have a 100 percent done decision?

"I'm not sure - anything can happen," Louis said.

UM has one advantage over the other schools - "My mom, she wants me to try and stay close," Louis said.

Bracy, Whitfield in 'Dream' race

Courtesy of Corey Long
UM commit Levonte Whitfield loves racing his cousin Marvin Bracy, an ESPNU 150 member and top sprinter nationally.
ESPNU 150 athlete Marvin Bracy (Orlando/Boone) and Class of 2013 Miami commit Levonte "Kermit" Whitfield will participate in the adidas Grand Prix this Saturday in New York.
Bracy and Whitfield will run the "Boys' Dream 100" where Bracy holds the fastest time in the nation at 10.28. Whitfield is tied for second-fastest nationally with a 10.31.

They are cousins and have been racing against each other on the track circuit for several years.

"I race Marvin all the time so I'm used to it and he's always going to be tough to beat," Whitfield said. "We love competing against each other, and I know he's going to be the guy to beat in every race."

Whitfield committed to Miami last month in a bit of a surprise.

"It came about pretty quick, but it's a very exciting time for me," Whitfield added. "They are going to bring me in as a slot receiver and a return specialist so I can get on the field quickly."

Corey Long
Greg Bryant is modeling his game after Edgerrin James.
"But this year they are joined by 10-15 other running backs with elite potential."
Bryant's stock has soared over the past six months after rushing for more than 900 yards and 22 touchdowns as part of a strong backfield at American Heritage.

Although Taylor's name has constantly been mentioned as the top underclassman in Palm Beach County, Bryant is catching up in terms of exposure and offers.

"I really don't think about it too much because whenever they mention his name my name usually comes up as well," Bryant said. "Both of us work real hard and we've been real productive so it makes sense."

Bryant's talents were on display at last weekend's UCF 7-on-7 shootout. It was hard not to notice the 5-foot-10, 200-pounder as he caught passes and shut down receivers on defense.

He had no shortage of visitors this spring as Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Miami, Florida State and Auburn were among the schools trying to get a leg up in his recruitment.

"I have a lot of verbal offers right now -- Georgia, Minnesota, Marshall, Bowling Green -- that's just off the top of my head," Bryant said. "The coaches I see tell me that I'm a big priority and they need a running back like me in their program."

Bryant is a big fan of running backs Clinton Portis and Edgerrin James so it's no surprise that Miami is high on his list of potential destinations.

"The Hurricanes were the team I loved growing up mainly because of their running backs," Bryant said. "I still watch a lot of old film of Edgerrin James because I'm trying to model my game after his.

"He is a great north-south runner and a terrific blocker in pass protection. That's something I'm trying hard to improve during the off-season. I want to be a complete back."

Bryant enjoys 7-on-7 events with his team because it gives him an opportunity to work on new elements of his game.

"This is good opportunity for me to work on catching the ball out of the backfield," Bryant said. "It's also just a great chance to compete. I want to win everything I'm involved in."

Middleton's Richard Benjamin says Miami No. 1
Mon. June 13, 2011 | John C. Cotey | Email
Middleton's Richard Benjamin says Miami No. 1

Middleton wide receiver Richard Benjamin returned from a camp at Miami this weekend and says the Hurricanes are No. 1 on his list.
Benjamin, who has more than a dozen prominent offers including from USF, Florida, FSU, Auburn and USC, put the Hurricanes out front after running a 4.5 40 and excelling during drills in front of the Miami coaches.
"It was a good experience,'' he said Monday morning. "I loved it.''

Benjamin was born in Fort Pierce and lived there until he was 7, close enough to Miami that he has Hurricane blood running through his veins. A big fan of former Hurricane wide receiver Andre Johnson, the rising junior says the program's plans for him as a slot receiver fit him perfectly, though others are recruiting him as a defensive back.

He has been praised by a number of recruiting analysts for his speed, smooth play and soft hands.
Benjamin has already camped at USF and FSU and says he plans on doing so at Florida as well this summer.
Last year, Benjamin was a big-play receiver, averaging over 27 yards a catch for Middleton. But his quarterback and friend, Aaron Midthus, transferred to Tampa Bay Tech.

For those of you living in the Twitter world, ESPN's Todd McShay (@McShay13) shared some insight recently on a few ACC players via his tweets:

Broke down Miami DLine tape today. DE Ojomo is underrated. DT Forston a bit overrated but a good athlete -- both have 1st/2nd day potential.

If UNC OLB Zach Brown's anticipation skills improve with more game experience he could be CFBs breakout player in 2011. He absolutely flies!

BC LB Luke Keuchly won't win many sprints but man he's always in on the action. Not many college LBs have his type of natural instincts.

Top 75 prospect releases top five
2:12
PM ET2012 S Deon Bush TopEmailCommentsOn the same day that he was on an unofficial visit to Alabama, four-star S Deon Bush of Florida (No. 66 in the ESPNU 150) posted his top five on his Facebook page. Courtesy of Patrick Lammer of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Bush's current favorites are Auburn, Alabama, Miami, Florida State and Purdue.

The Boilermakers? Bush's brother, Gary, is a rising sophomore WR in West Lafayette, which explains the interest, but we don't imagine that Purdue is a serious threat to the other four. Bush was scheduled to head to LSU and then possibly Notre Dame and Michigan after he left Tuscaloosa, and it's unclear if those visits are now off.

As a Miami native, the Hurricanes obviously loom large for Bush. Are they the team to beat? Four-star ILB commit Keith Brown told Matt Shodell of CaneSport.com in late May: "(Bush) told me not to speak on it, but I can say it's some good things, I can tell you that. I think he's waiting till the Army All-American game to announce -- me and him are in that." Kinda sounds like a guy who knows something, eh?
