damn one of my friends who works for ums athletic department just posted this

Former University of Miami football player JoJo Nicolas has died from injuries sustained in a horrific Tuesday crash, his brother Abner Davis said.

Surrounded by family and friends, Davis met members of the media and others in a hastily called press conference Wednesday at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Nicolas died at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Family members thanked the public for its outpouring of support and prayers.

Before the news of his death was announced, family and friends continued to use social media throughout the day to spread well wishes and prayers for Nicolas, who had remained in critical condition at the Ryder Trauma Center after the early morning crash left his Lexus wedged under an 18-wheeler.

According to police, Nicolas, who was a Canes defensive back from 2007-11 and wore jersey No. 29, was heading west on the MacArthur Causeway at about 5 a.m. Tuesday morning when his car slammed into the rear of a refrigerated tractor trailer. The crash paralyzed traffic and sent Nicolas to the hospital with very serious injuries, police said.

Hernandez said the investigation into what happened continued Wednesday. It was still not clear what led to the crash, but detectives were looking whether speed, alcohol, texting or any other factors played a role.

“The investigation will take a while,” Hernandez said.

Nicolas, who was celebrating ahead of his March 3 birthday, posted at about 2 a.m. that he was starting his festivities at a South Beach night club.

Tidbits

SUNDAY BUZZ COLUMN UM defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio sits inside his cocoon, focused solely on improving his unit while ignoring searing criticism from fans and former Hurricanes players. Over the past three months, D'Onofrio has been subjected to scathing attacks from Warren Sapp, Eric Winston and Duane Starks, and subtle shots from others, including former cornerback Phillip Buchanon.

Buchanon thanked Sapp for ripping D'Onofrio on Twitter and then tweeted:
"The truth about Al Folden."¯

D'Onofrio said Saturday he hadn't known about any of this. He said he wasn't aware any of these players had said anything about him. "I'm not going to worry about that," he said. "The guys in the building understand what we're doing. I can only worry about coaching the guys here and trying to get them to execute at a higher level."

To refresh, here's what the former UM standouts have said: ### Sapp: "The D coordinator is k!lling my school. That looks like no Miami defense in the history of our school... Don't talk to me about Al Golden and whatever the d-coordinator's name is. You don't ever hire someone you can't fire. That's the golden rule." ### Starks: “Miami is being outcoached [defensively] every week. They’re predictable. There’s no disguising. It’s embarrassing. I would get rid of some people. If you can’t coach good talent, there’s a problem.” ### Winston said D’Onofrio’s “scheme is brutal. Too bland, too vanilla. No imagination on his part.” He said UM’s defense looks unprepared and “I don’t think it’s completely a personnel problem. There are some X’s and O’s things that aren’t smart. Al better be willing to ride or die with the guy. You will get to a point where your a.ssistants will take you down. It upsets a lot of people knowing how close [friends] they are. If [D’Onofrio] was a hell of a coach, nobody would care. That’s not the case.”

Do Golden and UM athletic director Blake James dismiss this D’Onofrio criticism from former players as irrelevant or does it genuinely both them? They answered this way:

### Golden: "They played here. They have a right to say what they want to say. But at the same time, we've had a lot of coaches and players here that have been through a very difficult period. I know they are passionate about the program and the defense, but we are equally as passionate."

### James: “We all want our team to continue to improve in all phases… I love the passion that our former student athletes have for their program and at the same time recognize no one wants to play championship football more than our coaches and current student athletes.”

Keep in mind D’Onofrio is running the system Golden wants. And Golden remains committed to that system and to D’Onofrio, who said Saturday that UM will run both a 4-3 and 3-4 this season. Linebacker Denzel Perryman said UM "may change a little something" in its defensive approach but "I don't think it's going to be anything major."¯ Some former and current Hurricanes praise D'Onofrio publicly and privately, saying they’re well prepared and that he’s not responsible for the avalanche of defensive breakdowns over the past two seasons.

But some players wish D'Onofrio would play more man-to-man defense, blitz more and be more receptive to player suggestions. Some Board of Trustees members are unhappy with D’Onofrio, according to a high-ranking trustee, but the UM administration never asked Golden to consider replacing him.

A person who has coached on UM’s staff during D’Onofrio’s tenure said he believes D’Onofrio’s system should be simplified. Give D’Onofrio credit for being more creative and bold in the Russell Athletic Bowl, including a blitz from Deon Bush that resulted in a safety. But UM still allowed 554 yards in a 36-9 loss to Louisville. And despite a strong start, UM finished in the bottom half of the country in every key statistical category in 2013: 65th of 123 teams in scoring defense (26.8), 77th in run defense (176 yards per game), 88th in third-down conversion defense (31.9 percent success rate for opposing offenses, 45 percent in the final month), 89th in total defense (426.4 yards per game), 90th in pass defense (249.8), and 108th in fourth-down conversion defense (14 of 21 successful).

Former UM a.ssistant coach Don Soldinger said he sees nothing wrong with D’Onofrio’s system. What bothers him is this: “You don’t see guys swarming to the football. Guys are hesitant. Sometimes, they’re not taking the right angles. I question if the effort was there for all 11 guys. Al will fix it; I think the guy is special.” But Soldinger said “criticism that will come after this year or next will be justified” because these are Golden’s players. Said former UM center Brett Romberg: “Seeing the same mistakes and not being able to correct it is 100 percent coaching. Either [D’Onofrio] needs to adjust or he needs to go.” Read more here: cpy

He would've been 100x better than Highsmith.

Also means duke and yearby will be fine for the season

as long as they manage the Rb rotation correctly, they all should flourish. Gus should be a nice change of pace and between the tackles back. Yearby should be used as a Duke 2.0 (not as good but has similar style and potential)

yearby's talent isn't the issue...some had him ranked higher than dalvin cook during their high school years

but he's got weight to gain and i hate relying on true freshman to make an impact. duke johnson is the exception, not the norm.

ice was a good pickup, but they shouldve made him an a.ssistant coach so he can have more access to recruits

Ice can't be made an a.ssistant coach until he gets his degree which he's working on right now.

Have you seen recent pictures of Yearby from spring practice that boy has put on some weight.

sh*t been kept under wraps imo seems to me, or maybe its just the fact that i been without internet for a fu*king week

but this is the last reports before spring break

NEWS AND NOTES

• Defensive end David Perry, a 6-7, 280-pound rising senior out of University School by way of Portmore, Jamaica, quit the team and is not expected back. “David Perry is excused right now, and we’ll go from there,” Golden said. Perry played in one game (Savannah State) in 2013 and had two tackles.

• Redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Olsen had a good day, hitting receiver Rashawn Scott on several passes in different situations. Golden said he’s getting better and “playing with a lot more confidence.”

• The coach said offensive lineman Hunter Knighton, who was hospitalized a week ago Monday after collapsing following a workout, “is doing well and they’re just being prudent with him. That’s all I can say about that. We’re excited how he’s doing.”

• Braxton Berrios, an early enrollee who is recovering from ACL surgery on his right knee, will return to the team “closer to June than August,” Golden said.

The coach said he’ll play “slot receiver, Z receiver, kick return, punt return, special teams. He did all those things. He played wildcat, too.”

• On the offensive line, guard Danny Isidora and tackle Taylor Gadbois were praised by Golden. “Taylor is as gifted as any of our offensive lineman. I think the only one that’s more gifted is probably [tackle] Ereck Flowers. … For Taylor, it’s time.’’

• Reserve tackle Sunny Odogwu had his best day of practice Thursday, Golden said.

• The defensive players wearing the coveted black jersey: linebackers Alex Figueroa, Denzel Perryman, Raphael Kirby, safeties Deon Bush and Jamal Carter, defensive tackles Ufomba Kamalu and Olsen Pierre, cornerback Tracy Howard and defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad. Pierre walked gingerly off the practice field and into a building midway through the session, escorted by head trainer Vinny Scavo.

• Scavo was honored Thursday at the end of practice by being tapped into the prestigious Iron Arrow Honor Society. Based on Seminole Indian tradition, Iron Arrow recognizes those who exemplify love of alma mater, character, leadership, scholarship and humility. Also tapped into the Iron Arrow Society on Thursday was baseball player Javi Salas, who pitched a perfect game Tuesday.

• Golden said freshman middle linebacker Juwon Young, a hefty 6-2 and 240 pounds, “needs to spend more time studying football, which is not uncommon in his situation. [He’s] physical, can run, can strike, just gotta keep studying it so he can play faster.”
