Shannon Reaction: Day After Pitt
Sep. 24, 2010

By: David Lake

Jacory Harris
Head coach Randy Shannon met with media via teleconference Friday afternoon following the Miami Hurricanes 31-3 win at Pittsburgh.

The win at Pittsburgh was a good sign that Miami could bounce back after a disappointing loss to No. 2 Ohio State.

Miami’s schedule doesn’t get any easier next week as the Hurricanes travel to Clemson for their first ACC game of the season. Miami coach Randy Shannon says he won’t let his team have a letdown at Clemson after the Hurricanes’ dominating performance at Pitt.

“From a coaching standpoint, we are not going to let [them] get relaxed,” Shannon said. “If we feel like they are getting relaxed in practice, then we will put somebody else in and move forward and coach that guy up to play with a lot of intensity.”

Read on for more news and notes.

NEWS & NOTES

• According to Shannon, the minor injury quarterback Jacory Harris against Pitt that knocked him out of the game for one play is minor. “The doctors put him back in the game and felt like he was ready to go,” Shannon said. “It was nothing that he felt was serious and it is like anything, you get a nick on a finger and you tape it up and go. He got a little ding and he felt better and he was ready to go.”

• Jacory Harris’ two interceptions were not the product of bad decision making, Shannon said. Harris threw the ball to wide receiver Travis Benjamin when he had single coverage on a safety on both plays. Shannon says Miami receivers need to come down with the ball in those situations. “We always figure that if we have receivers one-on-one, then we have to make those catches,” Shannon said. “If our receivers are caught on a safety one-on-one they have to make those catches for us to be successful.”

• Defensively, Shannon was pleased with the overall team effort against Pittsburgh. “I think we tackled a lot better,” Shannon said. “We had a lot of gang tackles and tackles for loss and got a lot of pressure on the quarterbacks and we got two turnovers.”

• LB Sean Spence has started the season very strong and Shannon credits a lot of his early season success to the play of the defensive line. “That means the defensive line is getting double teamed,” Shannon said. “A lot of it goes to what our defensive line is doing. If they have to double team the defensive line, the linebackers will be free.”

• WR LaRon Byrd “did a great job,” Shannon said. “We have talked about getting other receivers involved and things like that and LaRon Byrd came up with a lot of big 15-yard out routes that were big plays in the game to keep a drive going.”

• Senior CBs Ryan Hill and DeMarcus Van Dyke each made an interception in the fourth quarter against Pittsburgh. Shannon was pleased to see his veteran defensive backs come up with big plays. “Ryan did a good job in practice,” Shannon said. “I am not taking anything away from Van Dyke because he played a lot also. It is just Ryan has been working his butt off and both of those guys are starters and I was happy to see both of those guys get interceptions.”

• The offensive line “did decent” against Pitt, Shannon said. “We got the quarterback sacked twice from off the edge and we have to get better at that. Jacory got touched maybe four times which is good and if you can cut that down to zero, that would be great.”

• LB Jordan Futch received extended playing time on defense against Pitt. Futch is working his way back from an ACL injury he sustained last season and Shannon is excited with the way he is coming back off the injury. “We are excited about his progress and the more he plays the better he will get,” Shannon said.

• Clemson’s death Valley is one of the toughest road venues the ACC has to offer. Shannon compares their stadium to playing at Virginia Tech and Ohio State. “I know it is really loud up there,” Shannon said. “It is a great college atmosphere and there is going to be a lot of fans and it is one of those places that you want to go and participate in because of the college atmosphere.”

• Miami has an extra weekend to prepare for Clemson, but the Tigers will have two entire weeks to prepare for UM. Clemson had two weeks to prepare last year for the Hurricanes and threw some new wrinkles into the gameplan. “They lined up and went to a lot of no backs and things like that in the game, which was something we didn’t see,” Shannon said. “You have to expect the unexpected.”

Henderson With The 1st Team
Sep. 28, 2010

By: David Lake

Seantrel Henderson
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Highly touted freshman offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson was working with the first team offense at right tackle during Tuesday morning’s practice.

If Henderson were to start this week, he would replace senior Joel Figueroa, who had his struggles against Pittsburgh--including giving up a sack which temporarily knocked quarterback Jacory Harris out of the game.

During Miami’s first three games of the season, redshirt freshman Jermaine Johnson was also rotating at right tackle.

At Pittsburgh, Henderson (6-8, 330) participated in just two offensive plays for the Hurricanes. On one of those plays, Henderson led the way for running back Damien Berry as the Hurricanes scored their first touchdown of the game on the opening drive.

"He's doing well every since he got here," center Tyler Horn said. "Every day he's gotten better. As the year goes on, you're going to see him grow a lot more. He's a good player and he's earning his time on the field."

Henderson was arguably the top offensive line recruit in the country for the class of 2010. He was named the 2009 USA Today High School Offensive Player of the Year, becoming the first lineman to win that award.

"He asks me (questions) all of the time," Horn said. "He's with the coaches all day trying to learn the offense so he can get on the field. He has a lot of desire in him."

If the decision to start Henderson becomes permanent, that could mean Figueroa moves back to guard, which is the position he has played throughout his Miami career. Figueroa made the switch to right tackle at the beginning of fall camp this year.

Press Conference News & Notes: 9/28
Sep. 28, 2010

By: David Lake

Randy Shannon
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The University of Miami will head to Clemson this Saturday for their first ACC game of the season.

The Hurricanes are looking to avenge last year’s 40-37 overtime loss to Clemson. The last three games against Clemson have all gone to overtime.

Clemson (2-1) is coming off a 27-24 overtime loss at Auburn. The Tigers are holding their homecoming game this week against the Hurricanes.

Read here for more news and notes as the Hurricanes prepare for this week’s game at Clemson.

************************************************** *******

Randy Opening Statement

“This week we have Clemson. It is the first ACC game to start off and we have nine weeks straight of playing football without any break. We are excited about it to see where we are at because this is a conference game and it is Clemson. The last three times we have played Clemson, they have been some great games and some great competition and that is what you want.”

NEWS & NOTES

• Clemson safety DeAndre McDaniel is “probably the best defensive player in the conference,” according to Shannon. “He is doing a great job of running their defense. They have him in the middle of the field and if somebody blows a coverage and makes a mistake, he covers up for them.”

• Junior defensive end Da’Quan Bowers arrived at Clemson as one of the top recruits in the country in 2008 and Shannon says he is now starting to tap into that potential. “He is a very physical guy that is a pass rush off the edge type of guy. He has really improved since last year when you watch him play on tape.”

• DE Andrew Smith had a breakout game against Pittsburgh, totaling two sacks. Shannon says Smith has made big improvements since arriving at Miami in 2008. “He really changed his body around,” Shannon said of Smith. “When he first got here he was a little out of shape and he wasn’t very big, but he has gained weight and he has been competing with Allen Bailey in running and conditioning.”

• The running game will be a big key for the Miami offense in setting up the pass this week. Miami‘s top two running backs, Damien Berry and Lamar Miller have combined to run for 330 yards and three touchdowns. “We have to be able to run the ball against this football team to get our passing game going,” Shannon said.

• Shannon says he doesn’t know if senior running back Graig Cooper will be available to play this week. Cooper briefly played in the season opener against Florida A&M, but sustained an injury in that game. “He may play this week, he may not,” Shannon said. “It just depends on his body.”

• TE Dwayne Allen leads Clemson in receiver going into this game and Shannon says containing him will be a big key for the UM defense. “The tight end is a key for them,” Shannon said. “He is doing a great job with option routes and getting to the sticks for the first down. It is going to be vital for us to make sure we take him out of the game when they go to the passing game.”

• Clemson likes to incorporate screens in their offense and get most of their big plays off screens. “Everything they do is predicated on mismatches,” Shannon said.

• The last three Miami-Clemson games have gone to overtime with the away team coming out with the win. Shannon expects this week’s game to be another close game. “It is going to go until the last quarter, a game like this on the road you hopefully as a coach get ahead in the first quarter and keep it ahead,” Shannon said.

• Clemson lost running back C.J. Spiller to graduation, but Clemson has replaced Spiller with a talented running back by committee in Andre Ellington and Jamie Harper. “They have two good tailbacks in Harper and Ellington. Those guys are very explosive. Ellington is probably the faster one and Harper is the bigger guy that has speed also. They are going to try and get matchups and they think if they can get a one-on-one situation with our linebackers they can win.”

CORAL GABLES — University of Miami coach Randy Shannon said he has no plans to redshirt freshman tailback Storm Johnson.

Johnson was a standout during fall practice, running for 132 yards on 12 carries in one scrimmage. But with tailbacks Damien Berry, Lamar Miller and Mike James ahead of him on the depth chart, Johnson did not play in the Hurricanes' first two games.

Against Pittsburgh last Thursday, Johnson saw action on kickoff coverage. Shannon said he's hoping to get Johnson "20 plays a game in some form or fashion."

Asked if he was considering redshirting Johnson, Shannon said, "No, because he can help us right now."

• Massive freshman offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson (6-foot-8, 330 pounds) will get more playing time beginning with Saturday's game against Clemson, Shannon said. Henderson saw action on eight offensive plays against Pittsburgh at right tackle, mostly in short-yardage situations. Joel Figueroa, the starter at right tackle against Ohio State and Pittsburgh, is splitting his time this week in practice at guard and tackle.

• Graig Cooper's chances of being on the travel roster for Clemson are "50-50," Shannon said.

• Ray Ray Armstrong will be back in the starting lineup at strong safety Saturday, Shannon said. JoJo Nicolas started last Thursday, but Armstrong entered the game on the second series. Ryan Hill, who made his first career start at cornerback against Pitt, will remain in the lineup.
