• A new deal for UM offensive coordinator Mark Whipple is being discussed, though UM knows he covets a major college head coaching job. . . . UM has been going back-and-forth with head coach Randy Shannon's agent on contract terms, with the process taking longer than expected, and the agent said to be seeking a salary more on par with other Atlantic Coast Conference coaches. But UM athletic director Kirby Hocutt said the extension -- adding three or four years to the one left -- ``will get done in the coming weeks.''

• More from Hocutt: He said no UM football player has requested a transfer, though rumors swirl around Kendal Thompkins and Davon Johnson. . . . UM is in talks to play an undetermined Pac-10 team at Yankee Stadium in a few years and a Southeastern Conference team in the Georgia Dome in 2012. . . .

ATH Marcques Dixon Talking Possibly Commiting To Miami

Southwest Dekalb athlete Marcques Dixon committed to Tennessee earlier this month, but now with the coaching changes at UT, he admits he wants to explore other options.

Dixon says a visit to Miami may be enough to sway his commitment to the Hurricanes.

He plans on visit Miami on the weekend of January 29.

“As of now I am still committed to Tennessee, but if I come down to Miami I might change my mind, so I am looking forward to taking a visit to see what they have to offer so I can make sure I am making the right decision for myself and my family in the future.”

“I am still planning on taking my visit to Miami on the 29th.”

In the wake of Lane Kiffin leaving Tennessee for Southern California, the Volunteers hired former Louisiana Tech head coach Derek Dooley. Because of those changes, Dixon wants to explore his options.

“They are bringing in Dooley and he doesn’t have the big name that you would expect for them to hire, so I don’t know much about his background or his coaching ability, so I can’t comment on my thoughts on him right now,” Dixon said.

“I am definitely more open to Miami now with the changes at Tennessee. I just want to make sure I am making the right decision.”

Dixon took an official visit to Tennessee this past weekend and says he and the other recruits were not allowed to communicate with Dooley due to NCAA rules, but he looks forward to talking with him this week.

“I just got back from Tennessee,” Dixon said. “They have a great atmosphere and great fan support. I went to a basketball game and that was fun because everybody was screaming my name and telling me they look forward to seeing me play next year. I got a lot of love from around the campus, but I am sure that Miami offers the same thing as well.”

“I haven’t talked to coach Dooley yet because since he was hired on a weekend when recruits are there that we are not able to talk to him. I am going to give him a call this week.”

Dixon says his coach has been in touch with UM defensive backs coach Wesley McGriff lately and that is how he is communicating with Miami at this point.

“I have called coach McGriff a couple of times and he said he couldn’t talk because it was a dead period, but I know now that he is talking to my coach a lot, so we are communicating that way,” Dixon said. “That is how we are staying in contact right now.”

Dixon had a breakout senior season this year, accounting for 500 receiving yards, 45 tackles and one interception. He also returned five kicks for touchdowns and two punts for touchdowns on special teams.

“Miami said they wanted a return specialist and that is what they were recruiting me for,” Dixon said. “I would love to play on defense too though. I would love to play cornerback.”

Dixon likes the tradition the Miami program has and says he sees a bright future for the Hurricanes in the coming years.

“I like the history and tradition that Miami has and I think they can have a great team next year,” Dixon said. “They were good this year and I think there is always room for improvement. They are close to being back to the way things used to be. I watched The U program on ESPN and that showed me the history of Miami and how passionate they are about football.”

Corey Lemonier Says Miami Is Different

Hialeah defensive end Corey Lemonier has been hearing from Miami via Coach McGriff multiple times each week at this point in the recruiting process.

That apparently wasn’t quite enough for Lemonier (6-4, 221), who decided that he wanted to speak directly with head man Randy Shannon.

“I’ve been talking to Coach McGriff a couple times a week, about the same as the other schools,” Lemonier said. “I called Coach Shannon this week but I talked to him a couple times before. This time we didn’t talk about football, we talked about school and life.”

Lemonier explained that Miami is a little different from his other finalists because there are a host of aspects he likes about the program.

“Miami has good academics, it’s close to home, they have good coaches, and they put players in the NFL,” Lemonier said. “I think it’s all of that together. Some schools are kind of different because at one school you can see early playing time. Other schools just have a great football atmosphere so it (Miami) is kind of different.”

Tennessee is one of those other schools for Lemonier, and he addressed where he stands with the Vols after all of their coaching changes.

“They haven’t talked to me yet so I don’t know what’s going to go on with that,” Lemonier said. “I guess it’s like a wait and see what happens with Tennessee. I’m not too much worried about their coaches leaving, they made the decision go somewhere else so it’s their decision.”

Lemonier received in-home visits last week from all four of his finalists which are Miami, Florida State, Auburn, and Tennessee. He said that it was pretty hectic with coaches coming in so often.

“It was kind of hectic when three schools came on the same day but it was a good experience,” Lemonier said. “I don’t think there was anything too good about it because you have to tell certain coaches that they can’t come yet and they have to wait until this one leaves. The best part was listening to what they all had to say and my mom was really paying attention to that. They were saying a lot of the same things but it was still interesting to hear all of them.”

Lemonier had previously had plans to take some unofficial visit in January to Florida State and Miami, and possibly even Auburn, Tennessee, and Florida. He said that he hadn’t been anywhere yet and now doesn’t plan on seeing any schools in person before making his decision on signing day.

Clements Experimenting With His Position
Jan. 17, 2010

By: Nate Adelson

Eduardo Clements.
Booker T. Washington running back and Cane commit Eduardo Clements has seen his future on the offensive side of the ball for as long as he can remember.

But recently, Clements (5-11, 182) has been spending some time working at cornerback with the help of a former high school teammate and soon to be Miami teammate.

“If it comes up that I have to go to corner, I’m serious about football so I’ll try my hardest no matter what position I’m at,” Clements said. “If I get moved there, I’ll give it 110 percent and do what I have to do. Playing corner is really just talk between me and Brandon (Harris), not between me and the coaches. Me and him started working out at the position and doing some different things.”

Regardless of where he will end up sometime down the road, Clements is still planning on beginning his career at Miami as a ball carrier.

“I think I’m going to play this spring but my time might be limited because there’s (Damien) Berry, (Lamar) Miller, Mike James, and people like that,” Clements said. “The times that I do get the ball, I’m going to show the coaches that I can play at a high level.”

Clements has not arrived on campus yet, but expects to get there with Carol City receiver Allen Hurns (his roommate) on “the 25th or the 26th.”

Clements is excited about getting on campus himself, but he was somewhat disappointed in what he saw from Miami in their 20-14 loss to Wisconsin in the Champs Sports Bowl.

“After (Graig) Cooper got hurt, I think the game went south and things happened,” Clements said. “I’m not saying that one person made them lose but he was really helping out at the start of the game. “The offensive line play was poor and the defense has to get better too. We have to play every game like we’re playing a big time opponent.”

Clements is just another prospect in an extending line of players to come from Booker T. Washington who continued their football careers at Miami. Former Tornadoes Antonio Dixon and Chavez Grant have recently finished their careers in Coral Gables, and Brandon Harris, Davon Johnson, and Thearon Collier are currently all sophomores.

“Those three guys have already made their names at UM so I’m just trying to come in be another name from Booker T.,” Clements said. “There’s a lot of pressure because you already know Brandon is Mr. All-ACC cornerback and he has all these awards. I want to come in as a freshman and have people say ‘He went to Booker T. so he might be good.’ I have to show that I can do the same thing as Brandon and Thearon.”

Clements went on to explain that many at Booker T. were actually concerned about his decision to attend Miami due to the current depth the Canes have at running back.

“There’s a lot of people who don’t know why I made that decision (to pick Miami) because there’s a lot of running backs already there,” Clements said. “I tell people there’s a lot of running backs at every school like Georgia, Michigan, and all the other schools I was considering. I just like the competition and the camaraderie that the running backs at Miami have so it’s like a family at that position. I felt like when I went on my visit, they welcomed me with open arms so I made my decision and I’m sticking with it.”

Clements missed 4 of his team’s 12 games with an injury but he still finished with 100 carries for 694 yards and 9 touchdowns, and 12 catches for 151 yards and 1 touchdown.

Thomas Details UM Visit Plans
Jan. 19, 2010

By: Nate Adelson

Christian Thomas
Tight end Christian Thomas from Highland High in Palmdale, California, has the type of talent and athleticism to step in at almost any program and play from day one.

Thomas (6-3, 234) has four programs still on his mind, two of which he has officially visited and the other two which he has plans to see soon.

“I still like USC, Oregon State, University of Oregon, and Miami,” Thomas said. “It’s all even and I’ve already visited Oregon and Oregon State. I had Miami set up (this weekend) but I have to take my SAT so me and the coaches will talk about rescheduling tomorrow. Then I’m going to USC the weekend after on the 29th.”

USC has long been a school of interest for Thomas but has anything changed with USC after the arrival of some new coaches?

“Not a thing, I still look at them the same way I always have,” Thomas said. “I’ve talked to Coach Orgeron already but I haven’t talked with Lane Kiffin or Monte Kiffin yet. Hopefully I can meet them when I go there for my official visit. When I talked to Coach Orgeron, he was just talking about how they would use me in their offense.”

Thomas has been in touch with Coach Barrow for Miami, who he says he talks to very frequently.

“I’ve been talking to Coach Barrow, I talked to him earlier today actually,” Thomas said. “He wants to get me down there and he talks about how I would be used in their offense. I talk to Coach Mike Barrow a lot, he’s real cool. He talks to my mom and he talks to my dad on the phone so he’s just a cool guy.”

Thomas certainly likes what Miami has to offer, but he is excited to get down to Coral Gables because he has never been down there before.

“I really like their academics and the way the football team is like a family down there,” Thomas said. “I haven’t been down there before so I’ve just heard about everything. I want to see things in person to put that up against what people say.”

Thomas was unsure of his numbers from his senior season, but he had 32 catches for 690 yards and 8 touchdowns as a junior.

Glenn Addresses Departure of Hurtt
Jan. 19, 2010

By: Nate Adelson

Tavadis Glenn
Jacksonville Raines offensive lineman Tavadis Glenn committed to Miami way back in April, thanks in large part to the efforts of the departed defensive line coach Clint Hurtt.

Now that Hurtt is no longer a part of the Miami staff after getting a job at Louisville, Glenn (6-5, 270) understands that it’s a part of the whole recruiting process.

“I mean it’s a part of the business so nobody can’t really say anything bad about that,” Glenn said. “He had a higher opportunity and he chose that opportunity for his family so that’s how I feel. I had been talking to Coach Stoutland for awhile now, I hadn’t talked to Coach Hurtt in like two months.”

Glenn was originally very surprised by the news but after getting a chance to think things over more, he is still convinced that Miami is the place for him.

“It doesn’t change anything about my commitment and I won’t take no other visits,” Glenn said. “I’m going to contact the coaches (at Miami) later today and make sure everything is cool. I was going to visit this weekend but I switched it because I have the SAT on the 23rd. I’m visiting on the 29th now.”

Glenn has been to Miami before but it was more for a game so he’s excited to get on campus and learn more about the school.

“I can’t wait to get down to Coral Gables and see the campus,” Glenn said. “I’m going to see what I’m about to step into for these next four years. I’m going to meet the rest of the coaching staff and enjoy myself, that’s about it.”

Glenn mentioned he has actually been warned by a former Miami player about regional biases in Coral Gables, but it’s not something he is too worried about.

“Another safety from Jacksonville by the name of Carl Walker, he went to Miami and he said he didn’t really play because they (Miami) don’t like Jacksonville boys,” Glenn said. “I don’t know about that, that didn’t get at me in no kind of way.”

Coming to Miami from Jacksonville has also been a little bit of a tricky situation for Glenn. The northern part of Florida isn’t exactly traditional Miami recruiting ground and Glenn often finds himself at odds with fans of both Florida and Florida State.

“Basically they just try to convince me that I need to come to Florida or Florida State,” Glenn said. “I don’t have nothing to say about Florida State but the Florida fans, I just tell them the truth about Urban Meyer. I tell them how he’s not all about your off the field issues, he’s about what you do on the field.”

Mireles Looking To Visit UM
Jan. 19, 2010

By: David Lake

Mireles
Delray Beach Atlantic wide receiver Quadarias Mireles was supposed to enroll early at Ole Miss last week, but because the NCAA Clearinghouse has not cleared him to enroll, he is still at home.

So Mireles, who received an official offer from Miami two weeks ago is now interested in visiting UM and is trying to set up an official visit to Coral Gables this weekend.

“I haven’t set anything up yet with Miami, but coach Hill is going to talk to coach Shannon,” Mireles said. “He said once he clears things up with coach Shannon we will go from there.”

Miami typically doesn’t like for recruits committed to other schools to take official visits. Mireles has been committed to Ole Miss since early November.

“Coach Hill sounded positive that I could come visit, but he never said whether he thinks coach Shannon will let me come in,” Mireles said.

“I just want to look at Miami and be sure about the place I want to go to school. I have been doing a whole lot of thinking right now. I like Miami because it is close to home and that is important to me, plus I liked Miami a lot growing up.”

With his early enrollment status in limbo, Mireles says Ole Miss still wants to bring him in.

“Ole Miss is in the process of getting me cleared,” Mireles said. “I guess after that I would be ready to enroll at Ole Miss. They tell me that they still want me.”

Mireles’ senior season was cut short due to an ankle injury. He finished the year with 426 yards and four touchdowns.

UM started recruiting Mireles in early December. When the Miami offer came in two weeks ago, he admits he was excited.

“I was happy when that offer came,” Mireles said. “It was like a dream come true. I have always been a fan of the U.”

If Mireles does take an official visit to Miami this weekend and decides he wants to commit to UM, he says he would have to take the ACT over again and get a higher test score to qualify for Miami.

“If I do choose Miami, I would have to take the test over and get a higher test score and come in the summer,” Mireles said.

Miami Court Recruits For A Reason

With National Signing Day two weeks away, 12 of UM's 26 oral commitments are from South Florida. But what concerns some UM fans is only two are ranked among Rivals.com's top 25 recruits from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. That compares with UF's seven and FSU's three.

So what's the deal? UM -- whose class is ranked 14th overall by ESPN -- passed on several standouts who wanted to be Canes. Miami has not pursued eight of those 25, for reasons ranging from academics (UM's standards are tougher than the NCAA's) to position duplication to players' size.

Also, UM likes several of its oral commitments much more than Rivals and some other major schools do. One example is Miami Beach defensive tackle Delmar Taylor, whose only other offers were from FIU, Western Michigan and Bowling Green.

Five on Rivals' top 25 local list are uncommitted, and two -- Miramar receiver Ivan McCartney and Hialeah defensive end Corey Lemonier -- said they're considering UM. Miami's two local commitments in Rivals' top 25 are Booker T. Washington running back Eduardo Clements at No. 12 and St. Thomas Aquinas offensive tackle Brandon Linder at No. 21.

Among other reasons UM didn't snag more of Rivals' top-25 local recruits: The No. 2 prospect, FSU-bound St. Thomas cornerback Lamarcus Joyner, said he did not grow up a UM fan and wants to go away for college. Northwestern receiver Michaelee Harris said he picked Louisville because he wants to play immediately.

Booker T. Washington defensive end Lynden Trail, a UF oral commitment, said: ``When I got on the phone with UM coaches, they go right to football. They ask, `When are you going to commit?' I was pushed away by their approach. [UF coach] Urban Meyer doesn't always ask about football. He takes time to learn about me and what I like to do and asks me about my girlfriend.'' His teammate, receiver Quinton Dunbar, wants to go to the same school as Trail and switched from UM to UF.

• Players UM didn't strongly pursue include the top-rated local quarterback (Central's Jeffrey Godfrey) and defensive tackle (Northwestern's Todd Chandler) and one of the top running backs (Columbus' Jakhari Gore) and cornerbacks (St. Thomas' Cody Riggs).

UM considered UF-bound Riggs too small at 5-9, but he said he wasn't interested in UM. ``Florida is the one winning championships now,'' Riggs said. ``That's why a lot of kids in our generation are looking at Florida.''

Gore, 5-10 and 175 pounds, and the 5-11 Godfrey do not fit offensive coordinator Mark Whipple's size preference. Eventually, ``They'll know they made a mistake,'' UCF-bound Godfrey said of UM bypassing him in favor of 6-2 oral commitment Stephen Morris of Miami Pace. ``Everyone talks about my height, but when you see me play, you know I can play. I already know the tricks of the trade. If they want to teach someone those things, well . . .''

Gore, who picked LSU over UF, said he's not upset with UM, and Columbus coach Chris Merritt said Clements ``fits Whipple's offense better than Jakhari. He's a bigger back. And Godfrey needs to be in an offense where he can run the ball. Whipple's offense has always had 6-3 dropback passers.''

Northwestern coach Billy Rolle said Shannon never returned his call to address why UM stopped pursuing Chandler but said some schools are dissuaded by his height (6-0). ``I was UM's first commitment, and they stopped recruiting me and never explained why. It's a slap in the face,'' Chandler said last month. He's considering USF and others.
