RB Hall Ready for UM Experience
Jun. 25, 2010

By: Nate Adelson

Darion Hall
Maples Lely running back and Cane signee Darion Hall is coming off a senior season that didn’t measure up to the level where he was at as a junior.

Hall (6-0, 195) had 127 carries for 965 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2009, compared to his 169 carries for 1791 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2008.

Now that Hall’s high school career is in the rear view mirror, he is well underway with his preparations for the transition to major college football.

“I’ve just been focusing on being ready when I get there and everything,” Hall said. “I’ve been working on my speed a lot, my bench, my squat, everything. I’ve been getting bigger, eating a lot. I’ve gained a few pounds, I’m probably about 195 right now.”

As is the case with any running back coming to Miami, they have a lot of talent to compete against with guys like Damien Berry, Lamar Miller, and Storm Johnson.

“I think my vision will help me a lot because with that being one of the things that I’m best at, it allows me to make the proper cuts at the proper times,” Hall said. “To be honest, I think we’re all about even when it comes to running the ball.”

Hall said that Gainesville linebacker Kevin Nelson is probably the other incoming freshman that he has gotten to know the best so far.

“Probably Kevin Nelson but he’s not my roommate actually, he’s one of my suitemates,” Hall said. “We’re ready to get started, get in the pads, and show everybody what we got. Jimmy Gaines is my roommate and we’ve talked a couple times but nothing too special.”

Hall sported the number nine jersey in his time at Lely but with the help of his family, he has chosen a new number for his time in Coral Gables.

“I’m going to be number nineteen now, it was just a decision I made after talking to my family,” Hall laughed. “I’m just looking forward to the experience because I know we’re going to have a great season. It’s going to be a comeback year and maybe we can even take it all the way.”

Hall is glad to have the recruiting process behind him because he said he never was a big fan of all the attention and people knowing so much about him.

“Things now are just more laid back, like I’m not stressed about schools calling me and sending me letters,” Hall said. “Now I’m focused on one school and one school only. I’m glad the recruiting process is behind me because I don’t like all that attention so much.”

Incoming Freshman OL Excited for New Challenges
Jun. 23, 2010

By: Nate Adelson

St. Thomas Aquinas offensive lineman and Cane signee Jermaine Barton gained attention and scholarship offers during the recruiting process due to his ideal build as a tackle.

The 6-foot-7 Barton said that after playing the season at around 275 pounds, he has added more weight to fill out his relatively thin frame.

“I’ve just been running and lifting weights really,” Barton said. “I’ve put on a good ten or fifteen pounds since the season so I’m at like 290 right now. I know it will help my transition to college since I’ve gotten bigger.”

Barton is hoping to have a strong showing heading into fall practices to put himself in position to get on the field as a true freshman.

“I’m talking to Coach Stoutland, he’s been the one recruiting me from the start,” Barton said. “He said to be in running shape so I’m prepared to practice every day. He said it will be open competition and there will be no guaranteed starts. I would like to play this year but it depends how I do in practice.”

Barton hasn’t really gotten to know many of the other signees, aside from his teammates Brandon Linder, Keion Payne, and walk-on Ben Hopfinger.

“I’ve talked to Andrew Tallman and John Feliciano, I know they’re rooming together,” Barton said. “John went to Western which is just down the street from our school. What do we have in common? Football, that’s what. I really haven’t had a chance to hang out with them like that so that’s really all I know.”

As much as he enjoyed his time at the Broward County powerhouse, Barton is ready to move on with his life and get a taste of college.

“It’s going to be something new for me but I’m so ready to get started on the college experience,” Barton said. “Even just going to practice, it’s going to be a whole different game. Everybody is bigger and faster so I have to get used to that.”

Barton was wearing a boot for a foot injury at the spring game in March. He said he aggravated it slightly walking down the stairs recently but he doesn’t see it as a problem.

Many prospects tire easily of the attention that the recruiting process brings, but Barton already misses being sought after to some extent.

“Things have changed a little bit (since he signed), you just need to be more focused by this point so you can be ready,” Barton said. “Yea, I do miss the calls, people wanting to talk to me, that type of stuff. That part was fun sometimes.”

DB Wayne Lyons: Canes in pretty good shape
Jun 24, 2010

Fort Lauderdale Dillard High School DB Wayne Lyons says he's "still considering Miami for sure."

He had coaches Wesley McGriff and Aubrey Hill at his spring game, which Lyons says showed him just how much the Canes want him.

"I've also been talking to Jeff Stoutland - he wanted to make sure Miami was on my mind," Lyons said.

Lyons now is up to 49 scholarship offers, which makes for a full mailbox and a busy recruitment.

"I think it's great because I can just choose a school I really want to and not be forced to pick somewhere," Lyons said.

Lyons says he'll eventually get his list down to just a few schools "based on unofficial visits I took, conversations I have with coaches, things like that."

He says the Canes are in "pretty good shape."

"I'll make a final decision after I take all my official visits," Lyons said.

He's already taken unofficial visits to numerous schools - Stanford, Notre Dame, Florida State, USF, Florida and Notre Dame.

And he visited Miami twice during the spring to watch practices.

"It was nice - and I got to talk to the engineering people, they had a good talk with me and my mom," Lyons said.

Of what he looks for on his visits, Lyons said, "Just how the different programs are run, the environment, the vibe I get from the place."

Of UM, he says "It's close to home, they have a lot of tradition. And I like the coaching staff also."

Last season Lyons had 76 tackles, 21 for losses, with three forced fumbles and two safeties.

This will be his first year playing both ways.

DB recaps visit to UM
Dallas Crawford is one of the top cornerback prospects in all of Florida this year and the South Fort Myers standout talked about his recent visit to Miami and more below.

Dallas Crawford has emerged as one of the state's premier corner prospects. He's fresh off a strong spring.
"Our team got better so spring was pretty good," Crawford said. "A lot of schools came by, too."

With over 20 offers now, Crawford picked out five that appear to be on the top of his list right now.

"I like Miami, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Ole Miss the most right now," he said. "Miami and Michigan are at the top. I took a visit to both of them. I like the atmosphere and the coaches at both places."

Crawford, 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, took an unofficial visit to Miami recently and came away impressed.

"I went down there and had a good time," he said. "It was a good visit. I just talked to coaches Shannon, McGriff and Hill. I did pretty much everything I could do on an unofficial. I like Miami a lot. I am trying to set up a visit to North Carolina in the next few weeks."

Crawford says he received recruiting calls last month from coaches at Miami, Michigan, Ole Miss, Florida, Wake, Tennessee, and USF and he talked about what he's looking for in a school.

"Academics are important and somewhere I feel like home," he said.

Menocal Commits to the 'U'
Jun. 28, 2010

By: Christopher Stock

Big Sonny, this kid is a beast. This is a great pickup. The U waits for NO MAN. Primas Donna better get in line. The flood gates are gonna bust open because of our limited scholarships.

Belen Jesuit LB Nick Menocal has verbally committed to the University of Miami.

Menocal checked in at the Miami Nike Camp earlier this spring at 6-foot-2 and 232 pounds and ran a 4.59 laser 40 with a 35.5-inch vertical jump.

His 114.40 SPARQ rating was one of the highest in Florida.

He had 17 offers to his credit including one from Virgina and Iowa. A Florida State was on the way.

Menocal recently just got back from a trip to the UM campus, when he made his commitment.

"I like the whole family atmosphere, I felt at home there," Menocal told InsideTheU.com. "I went a couple weeks ago for an unofficial visit and saw the campus. I called Coach Shannon this weekend and asked if I could come visit today."

Menocal, who recorded 61 tackles last season, grew up a fan of Miami.

"I grew up watching Miami," he said. "My mom graduating from the University of Miami. That was the only team I watched growing up. I grew up loving UM."

As a linebacker, its no surprise that Ray Lewis is his favorite Cane of all-time.

I loved how emotional he is on the field," Menocal said.

Menocal helped lead Belen Jesuit to an 11-4 season in which they were Class 3A state runners-up after an improbable run.

"It was a very exciting run<" he said. "We were underdogs for a lot of the games, but we kept our head up. We practice and worked hard."

There might be some doubters about a player from Belen Jesuit, which is not known for producing elite prospects, but Menocal insists he is not paying attention to what people say.

"Honestly I'm not really worried about that, I could care less what people think," Menocal said. "I'll work hard like I always have, I'll have great coaching at UM, and I should be fine."

Miami currently has six commitments in the 2011 class and has high expectations for the 2010 season.

"I think the program is improving a lot," Menocal said. "They have picked up a lot of good players. we are going to have great teams the next couple of years."
