Practice Report: 8/19 Morning
Aug. 19, 2009

By: Christopher Stock

Eric Moncur
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami returned to practice this morning in full pads in part of their third two-a-day of the fall.

Read here for the latest from today’s practice including what Shannon is saying about the latest string of injuries, how players are handling the two-a-day practices, and more.

************************************************** ******************

Randy Shannon Statement

On Friday's upcoming scrimmage:
"For them (it is the best part of practice), just because if they work hard in the heat and all of those situations, now it is game type situations and see if they can actually do it, the competition factor, scoring touchdowns, stopping them from scoring touchdowns, getting off the field on third downs, also some special teams situations, who can actually return and block on returns, getting off blocks, that's the best thing about watching it on film. You can see where you come from from day one to now."

NEWS & NOTES

• The team will resume practice in the afternoon, have a day off on Thursday, followed by their second scrimmage of the fall on Friday, which is closed to the media.

• The focus of the practice was stopping the run and third downs.

• RB Graig Cooper was in pads in today's practice after missing Tuesday's practice as he was in a protective walking boot. "He moved around today, did some individual stuff, he should be fine," Shannon said. "I don't know if he'll be ready to go for the scrimmage (on Friday), we'll know more after this afternoon's practice."

• DE Eric Moncur did not practice. "We are still resting him, that's all," Shannon said.

• There are currently four defensive ends out with injuries as Eric Moncur, Adewale Ojomo, Olivier Vernon, and Gavin Hardin are out leaving the team with Marcus Robinson, Steven Wesley, Dyron Dye, and Andrew Smith as the healthy ones. "If we didn't have the numbers at that position, it would be really tough for us to even practice. It would be like three years ago. We couldn't practice really half the time, we had to walk through a lot."

• LB Colin McCarthy also missed the morning practice because they are "resting him". Shannon tends to do this with upperclassmen, who have been injury-prone.

• DE Olivier Vernon did some individual work and some work on third downs, but did not participate in all of the full contact drills.

• Friday's scrimmage will feature more reps by the first-team guys although the younger players will get plenty of reps too. Shannon plans on increasing the reps of the first-team guys progressively in each of the three scheduled scrimmages. The third is on August 25.

• Senior defensive end Eric Moncur returned to practice today after missing yesterday.

• The NCAA is investigating a potential recruiting violation with Tennessee RB Bryce Brown, a former Hurricane recruit, and younger brother of Miami LB Arthur Brown. Shannon said the NCAA has not contacted them about Arthur.

• K Jake Wieclaw will be given every opportunity to be the team's kickoff guy relieving Matt Bosher of those duties so he can concentrate on kicking field goals and punts. One of the reasons why the coaches would like to see Wieclaw handle those duties are because of the potential strain and injury possibility it could cause Bosher for overextending himself on kickoffs. Wieclaw, a redshirt freshman, will need a good effort on Friday's scrimmage to secure this role.

• The team will not start preparing for Florida State in a game week situation until seven days prior to the game.

Practice Report: 8/19 Afternoon
Aug. 19, 2009

By: Christopher Stock

Sam Shields
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami practiced in the afternoon completing their third two-a-day of the fall.

Read here for the latest from today’s practice including what Shannon is saying about the latest string of injuries, how players are handling the two-a-day practices, and more.

************************************************** ******************

Note: Randy Shannon does not address the media in the afternoon practice of a two-a-day.

NEWS & NOTES

• RB Javarris James had a 65-yard run and a 30-yard run during team drills. It was good to see James stand out as he prepares for his senior year. If healthy, he can be a solid back who can excel in short yardage situations. James has also proved to be a good receiver out of the backfield, something that Graig Cooper did not do well last season.

• CB Sam Shields and S Vaughn Telemaque recorded interceptions in practice. The defense has done a good job of intercepting passes throughout the fall and hope to continue their success during the season.

• LB Sean Spence says he likes the adjustment to strongside linebacker and thinks he'll be able to make big plays there this season after playing weakside in 2008.

• DE Eric Moncur was not at practice.

• DE Olivier Vernon was in a walking boot on his left foot after practice. His injury is not expected to be serious according to Shannon.

• TE Jimmy Graham is doing very well and is looking forward to the Florida State game. He said it will be "100 times different" than a Duke game in basketball.

• OL Joel Figueroa has been doing well as the first-team right guard this fall with Harland Gunn backing him up. There might not be two bigger guards in the country that Figueroa (6-5, 330) and Orlando Franklin (6-7, 318).

• The team is off on Thursday before having a closed scrimmage on Friday. They will be off Saturday and have their final two-a-day on Sunday.

No More Deep Balls Says CB Grant
Aug. 19, 2009

By: Christopher Stock

Chavez Grant
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The Miami defense is doing well with their enthusiasm, but need to continue to work on preventing the deep balls according to senior captain Chavez Grant.

Grant, who has 75 tackles and two interceptions in 37 games, likes the defense’s attitude mid-way through fall practices.

“I like our enthusiasm and ability to play well the most,” Grant said. “Sometimes the offense plays good, but we always come right back. The offense beats us up a few plays, but we don’t lose our enthusiasm and never lose our fire. That has a lot to do with playing well as a defense, being able to bounce back. Coach got on us one day real hard and we bounced back and played well.”

On the flip side, Grant said he would like to see the secondary, which finished seventh nationally against the pass last season, improve on preventing the deep ball as they have been prone to allowing big plays during fall camp.

“I would like to see us improve on the deep balls,” Grant said. “In the secondary you are going to give up deep balls, I understand that. Guys are going to make mistakes and sometimes you are going to be out of place. To be honest, we are not going to eliminate deep balls, but we can minimize them to the most, that’s what we want to do. The more we can do that, the better we will be as a defense.”

So what does it take to succeed against the deep ball?

“You have to concentrate on body position, you have to judge the ball right, make sure your body is in the right place, know where your help is because if you are on the inside and the safety is on the inside also and they throw the ball outside, then you are beat,” Grant said. “It’s a lot of things that go into it. The last thing is you have to judge the ball correctly. If the ball is way in the sky and there is nothing around it, but the ball, it’s kind of hard to tell where it really is and where it’s really going.”

The Hurricanes held their first scrimmage on Saturday, which was closed to the media, but Grant said there were some positives and negatives.

“It was productive,” he said. “I had a few mistakes, but of course that happened in the first scrimmage. But overall we did pretty good. Some guys stepped up and played really well. Some guys didn’t play so well, but that’s expected. Everybody is not going to have a good day. We saw a lot of things we need to fix and we saw a lot of things that we did well. We found out some of our strengths and weaknesses. We are just coming back this week trying to get them corrected.”

Grant noted that Ryan Hill, Randy Phillips, Vaughn Telemaque, and Jared Campbell all played well in the scrimmage.

In particular, he talked about what Hill did that was impressive:

"Ryan Hill did pretty well. He did his a.ssignments. He was always where he needed to be and always doing what he was supposed to do. He played hard, hustled to the football, and made his tackles. Basically that’s what football is—be where you’re supposed to be and making tackles."

BY SUSAN MILLER DEGNAN

University of Miami defensive end Eric Moncur landed in Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon to be examined by a physician for pain near his groin that Moncur hopes is unrelated to a large tear in his abdominal muscle that was repaired in December, someone close to the family told The Miami Herald on Wednesday afternoon.

Moncur is one of three UM defensive ends who are injured, at least one or more of them severely. Defensive end Gavin Hardin also has been out, and Shannon said earlier in the week that he would be out ``a while.''

Fellow end Adewale Ojomo underwent surgery for a broken jaw Tuesday and is expected to miss substantial playing time.

Moncur was granted a rare sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA after sitting out most of last season with abdominal pain that he initially thought was related to a sports hernia surgery he had in the summer of 2008.

The specialist Moncur is seeing is the doctor who repaired the muscle tear.

RETURN UNKNOWN

The UM staff and officials don't want to take any chances, the source said, adding that there's a possibility Moncur overcompensated after the first sports hernia surgery and might have an injury in the right groin area.

It is still unknown whether he will miss any games.

Moncur missed practice Wednesday morning and has been extremely limited during fall camp.

Coach Randy Shannon said after Wednesday morning's session regarding Moncur's absence: ``Just resting him.''

One of the Hurricanes' deepest position groups was at defensive end. Freshman Olivier Vernon went through limited practice Wednesday after what is believed to be a minor ankle injury he sustained several days ago.

Other defensive ends are Marcus Robinson, Andrew Smith, Steven Wesley and Dyron Dye. Shannon said Wednesday that he did not intend to move defensive tackle Allen Bailey back to end.

Bailey said after the Wednesday afternoon practice that ``there are a few nicks and bangs, but we have the young guys stepping up and other guys playing different positions to contribute.''

Bailey said he is playing defensive end ``in certain situations like third down -- same stuff as last year.''

Freshman Dye said the older players are ``really impressed'' with his play at right end and have told him he has stepped up to the challenge. ``I'm a big factor now so I just have to keep going hard every day.''

Robinson, a sophomore, said the ends are all rotating.

``Rotating keeps us fresh,'' he said. ``We feel like the people playing end now are good enough to carry the team.''

BROWN PROBE

Shannon spoke only after the morning session. He was asked about media reports concerning Tennessee running back Bryce Brown, the former UM recruit and younger brother of UM linebacker Arthur Brown.

Bryce Brown is being investigated by the NCAA in connection with his relationship with mentor/trainer Brian Butler. ESPN reported that the NCAA ``is looking into some of the fundraising Brown accepted in high school to visit college campuses and what role Butler might have played.''

Shannon was asked if the NCAA was investigating Arthur, who also had trained with Butler. ``Never heard of it,'' Shannon said. ``No, none of that stuff has happened.''

UM athletic director Kirby Hocutt concurred.

``All I know about the case is what what I read in the paper. There's no concern in any way. I would think if there was something that pertained to Miami, we would have been contacted, and we have not been contacted.''

Let's all take a chill pill and relax for the time being....

let's not hit the panic button just yet.

Moncur might just miss one game anyways. Thankfully Vernon has stepped up a lot this year.

This could be another chance for a guy like Wesley to step up as well and come in for a few plays.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves and crown Ponder as a Payton Manning who can k!ll us from the pocket. FSU will always run first and run second. Passing is a third option for them. Marcus Robinson is very good against the run and Allen Bailey can slide in at DE for a few plays. With that being said, Ojomo was probably our best DE against the run when he played last season.

Also, remember when Jason Witten played 4 games last year with a broken jaw and his mouth shut? If Ojomo misses the FSU game, he'll be back by GT or VT.

Reports from camp are that Dyron Dye has come up a long way... i still don't want him in the game just yet however but he may just make an impact if he plays against FSU.

Again, Shannon has been very cautious of burning his players this camp, with needed rest, Moncur will probably be back by FSU, still 2 weeks and a half away.

C'mon, again, we're not doomed. Our offense is explosive and will put up points, gurantee that. Specially with an inexperienced FSU secondary and besides Dakota Watson, their LB play is so so.

Ojomo 'trying to stay positive' say teammates

University of Miami defensive end Steven Wesley visited Adewale Ojomo at the hospital Tuesday night -- not long after he had surgery to work on his broken jaw.

Ojomo Wesley said the 6-4, 253-pound sophomore defensive end, who was sucker punched by a walkon Sunday in the team's lockerroom, is trying to stay positive after what teammates have described as an "unfortunate incident."

"I told him to keep his head up, stay focused and be in a good mood," Wesley said. "We were still clowning around. He's still in good spirits and stuff. I've been texting him everyday to make sure his mind is right. He's just saying what he can, appreciating the support."

Said defensive tackle Marcus Forston: "We just keep telling to stay positive, let things go. He's taking things slow, taking the surgery well."

UM coach Randy Shannon still hasn't acknowledged or addressed the locker room incident publicly other than to say Ojomo was injured "horsing around." But chances are Shannon may be more forthcoming tonight during WQAM's Hurricanes Hotline show. From what we've heard from team members, the walkon, a former offensive lineman at Miami Norland who joined the team at the start of fall camp, was kicked off the team shortly after the incident.

The loss is the second big injury to a UM defensive end thus far. Senior Eric Moncur saw a specialist for his groin in Philadelphia Wednesday, but has been on and off the practice field since camp began. It is unclear how long either he or Ojomo could be out. But both injuries could potentially be season-ending. Redshirt freshman Gavin Hardin is expectd to miss the season also, but wasn't expected to see major minutes anyway.

UM's strength defensively entering the season was its depth at defensive end. But that's obviously thinning. Welsey said he and sophomore Marcus Robinson are now the primary players rotating at left end and freshmen Olivier Vernon and Dyron Dye are getting most of the work on the right side. There are reports that Allen Bailey and Marcus Forston are seeing more reps at end now, too. But I was told by Forston he and Bailey are still getting the majority of their work at tackle. If any defensive tackles could move outside, it is Bailey and Forston.

A FEW MORE NOTES...

> The Canes will scrimmage for the second time this fall on Friday, but will be off Thursday and Saturday. Expect Shannon to talk about it Sunday.

> WEDNESDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS (Provided by UM's Sports info staff): Randy Phillips stood out in morning drills with a sack and pass deflection in 11-on-11 play... In a series of 15-20 red zone plays, the defense held the offense to just one TD (a Taylor Cook pass to LaRon Byrd for a 20-yard score)... Javarris James had a run and catch of more than 20 yards in the morning and followed it up by breaking off runs of 65 and 30 yards in the afternoon... Lee Chambers had a few runs of 10-15 yards in rushing drills... Sam Shields and Vaughn Telemaque had interceptions... Jacory Harris hooked up with Thearon Collier (twice), Jimmy Graham and Travis Benjamin for big gains during 11-on-11 work.

Linebacker Jordan Futch, one of UM's friendliest players, said with enthusiasm earlier this week that he is happy anywhere the coaches put him -- as long as he plays.

``Coach [Randy] Shannon and Coach [John] Lovett are doing great things with us,'' said the 6-2, 235-pound sophomore, who played at Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna. ``The learning curve is coming around. I'm primarily at [the weak side] now, but I play all positions. Coach Lovett is making sure every linebacker knows every position, from the Nick, the Will, the Dime, Mike, Sam -- all of it.''

Futch said he did well in the first scrimmage and was hoping to continue his good play in UM's second scrimmage Friday. It was closed to the media and public.

``To be honest with you, it doesn't matter,'' Futch said about his position preference. ``As long as I'm on the field making tackles, it doesn't matter.''

• Defensive end Eric Moncur is expected back at practice Sunday, though it is not known whether he will participate. He is awaiting word on medical tests he took in Philadelphia. Moncur went there Wednesday to see a specialist about his groin pain.

• UM is off Saturday.
