Wright is doing really well. He missed on a few deep balls but when the pass wasn't there he threw it away. Didn't agree with a lot of the play calling but Nix is getting better. Thats the D-Line I expect to see and you see my n*gga McNeal out there? Kid needs more reps

Finally a Big Win: Canes Defeat Texas A&M

The naysayers can lay off.

At least for a week or two.

The Hurricanes and first-year coach Randy Shannon have a win over a top 20 team.

And an impressive win at that.

The Canes jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead against Texas A&M and went on to win in front of 44,622 fans, 34-17.

"That was a big victory for us tonight," coach Randy Shannon said. "It was an opportunity to bounce back from earlier this season in playing a good opponent in Texas A&M.

"It was a team effort. The guys played hard, they played well. It was a Thursday night game in prime time where the nation could see what we really have as the University of Miami football team."

Miami's offense managed 402 yards in the game, 275 through the air.

Quarterback Kyle Wright was on top of his game – he completed 21 of 26 passes for 275 yards for two touchdowns with no interceptions.

"We were 1?6 against ranked opponents in the last year or two," Wright said. "We knew Texas A&M was a great team, that their defense was tough. We knew we had to jump on them early, and it got a big win for us."

The running game was led by Graig Cooper's 50 yards on seven rushing attempts. He added four receptions for 34 yards.

Javarris James carried for 46 yards on 20 carries.

"We knew they were going to be a tough defense," James said. "They made the running game a lot harder. We had to be patient. Graig Cooper broke some big runs; I pounded. I have to take my hat off to the passing game. They came through."

The team's leading receiver was Sam Shields, with 117 yards on six receptions.

"We knew we had this in us – the receivers made plays and I knew if I gave them the ball we would be successful in the passing game," Wright said. "That is what happened tonight."

Miami's defense had a big task in this game: Trying to slow down tailback Mike Goodson and mobile quarterback Stephen McGee.

Mission accomplished.

Goodson had nine carries for 29 yards; McGee rushed for 39 yards.

McGee hit on 11 of 20 passes for 109 yards.

"We came out early and really played physical because we wanted to set a tone early," end Calais Campbell said. "We wanted to show everyone how good of a defense we really have, and I think we did a really good job of doing that tonight."

Linebacker Colin McCarthy added, "I don't think we were communicating as well as we should have in the first couple of games this season. That's something we've really been working on, and I think we did a good job today. You can see the difference when we communicate and when we don't."

The recap:

After stopping Texas A&M three-and-out to start the game, the Canes converted a couple of first downs and then faced a fourth-and-one at the Aggie 47. Shannon opted to go for it, and a Wright sneak picked up the first down.

The drive ended with a touchdown on a direct snap to Cooper, who ran in from seven yards out.

Wright was six-for-eight on the drive, and one of those incompletions was a drop.

It was an 18-play, 80-yard drive that took 8:51 off the clock.

With 3:29 left in the quarter it was 7-0 Miami.

"That was great to come out and execute," Wright said. "It was great to be able to go up and down the field like that and cap it off with a touchdown."

Texas A&M faced a fourth-and-one from the UM 40 on its ensuing drive.

And, like the Canes, the Aggies went for it.

Also like UM, Texas A&M converted.

A big difference: The drive ended without a score. Back-to-back quarterback pressures by Campbell and Vegas Franklin forced a pooch punt.

UM's next drive ended with a turnover when Cooper fumbled on a third-and-long play, and Texas A&M recovered at the Cane 39.

But the Miami defense held, forcing a 50-yard Matt Szymanski field goal attempt that missed.

On the second play of the Canes's ensuing drive Wright hooked up with Sam Shields on a 51-yard bomb that took the Canes down to the Texas A&M 13-yard line.

On a third-and-two play from the three yard line Javarris James lined up at quarterback with Wright split wide. James ran up the middle and came up short by a yard.

On fourth-and-one the Canes went for it.

And James again lined up at quarterback. He took the direct shotgun snap and dove forward for a first down at the two.

Two plays later James broke through the line for a touchdown.

With 4:53 remaining in the first half it was a 14-0 Miami lead.

The Canes weren't about to sit on that. On the third play of the Aggies' next drive McCarthy grabbed a deflected pass and rumbled 30 yards up the left sideline to the A&M 22.

The drive stalled at the 18, and Francesco Zampogna hooked a 35-yard field goal wide right.

It remained a 14-0 game with 1:43 on the clock.

As remarkable as it sounds, the Canes scored 10 points in that span.

With 33 seconds left the Aggies fumbled, and Calais Campbell recovered at the A&M 12-yard line. On first down Cooper took a swing pass and sped upfield, splitting two defenders while diving into the end zone.

The Aggies fumbled the ensuing kickoff, giving Miami the ball at the Aggie39 with 17 seconds left.

A Cooper screen pass took the ball to the 28 with nine seconds left. Two plays later Zampogna hit a 45-yard field goal.

The Canes entered the locker room with a 24-0 lead.

And all the momentum in the world.

That momentum continued with a 40-yard bomb to Lance Leggett on the first play of the second half. But the drive stalled.

Neither team got anything going until the end of the third quarter.

A 14-yard run by Cooper combined with a Shields 36-yard catch and a 15-yard roughing penalty put UM at the Texas A&M 7.

On first down Cooper lined up in shotgun and got the direct snap but went nowhere. On second down Chris Zellner caught a seven-yard touchdown pass in the middle of the end zone.

It was a 31-0 Cane lead.

"I just sat down in my spot," Zellner said. "Coach (Patrick) Nix said it was going to happen like that. But I have to say I took it from Dedrick (Epps). He was supposed to be in, but he let me go in that play. I'd like to say `Thank you' to Dedrick."

The Aggies finally got on the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter on a nine-play, 39-yard drive that culminated with a 32-yard field goal.

With 11:40 remaining in the game it was a 31-3 Cane lead.

Cooper fumbled on Miami's next possession, giving Texas A&M the ball at the UM 39. The Aggies got a touchdown on a sneak by Stephen McGee.

With 8:03 left it was a 31-10 game.

With 2:07 remaining Zampogna hammered home a 23-yard field goal to make it 34-10.

Martellus Bennett hauled in a 33-yard touchdown at the end of the game for the final margin.

The win gives Miami a confidence boost entering the ACC schedule.

"We have confidence, and I think that this is going to get us on a roll a little bit," Wright said. "We have to take it and run."

Zellner added, "It's huge. We didn't do a great job at Oklahoma. But we know we're a great football team. And we went out tonight and made a statement. It's a great feeling."

The bottom line after the win?

"I'm pleased with the victory, but I just said in the locker room, `You've got tonight and tomorrow and we'll go back Sunday and get ready for our next opponent, which is Duke,'" Shannon said. "Those guys have to stay focused and understand that."

* Miami's 24-0 halftime lead was the largest against a ranked opponent since the Canes played No. 14 Syracuse in 2001.

* Daren Daly returned to his job as kickoff specialist but struggled on several attempts.

* Entering this game Miami was 13-1 in Thursday night games over the last 21 years. The team's last loss on a Thursday night was Sept. 18, 1997 against Pittsburgh, 21-17.

* Six native Texans joined Calais Campbell and Derrick Morse as captains for the game: Kirby Freeman, DajLeon Farr, Shawnbrey McNeal, Jason Fox, Tyrone Byrd and Reggie Youngblood.

* Fans cheered Shannon's name during the game.

"They're my buddies up there," Shannon said. "I like them. It is good, but you know what? That's all about what Miami is about – we're family."

Cane Fans Woo Streeter at Texas A&M Game

Chants of "Tommy, Tommy, Tommy," rained down from the Orange Bowl faithful at the end of tonight's victory over Texas A&M.

One fan yelled, `Tommy, stay home baby.'

Cane fans were wooing Miami Northwestern receiver Tommy Streeter, who attended the game with Cane commitments Marcus Forston, Sean Spence and Jacory Harris.

Streeter told CaneSport that he was surprised at the notoriety he received.

"You feel love, like a family," Streeter said. "But my decision is still not made up yet."

Streeter went in the locker room after the game.

"The game was exciting," Streeter said. "When we walked through the stands the fans were screaming our names, telling us to come to UM, make a big contribution here."

Does a game like this make him want to be a Cane more?

"Yeah," Streeter said. "The fans are the best. In the midst of them winning this game, you've got the fans supporting them, saying if you come here this can happen to you too. It's a good feeling."

Harris said of his time in the Orange Bowl that "We just had fun. This showed that Miami's ready to play. When we come out here we'll make a difference, and right now they're doing a good job."

Forston added, "The defense came out swarming 110 percent. It was amazing how the fans knew each one of us. They know we're a family now, that we're committed to the University of Miami. And they showed us great love."

Harris and Forston are working Streeter hard to get him to Miami in the end.

"Every day I hear it," Streeter said. "Every day in practice they say, `Come to the U. We need you.' I say I'm not sure yet, that I haven't made up my mind, have a lot to think about. There's so much pressure. This process is not easy."

When will he make a final decision?

"Probably after the season," Streeter said.

* Streeter clarified that he did not throw up a `U' at the Soutlake Carroll game. He crossed his arms.

Nix: Im Going to Have a Baby

Patrick Nix ran off the Orange Bowl field late Thursday night with his young sons Bo and Caleb in tow. Asked if he'd take time for an interview, he said, "It'll have to be real quick. I'm going to have a baby."

The Miami Hurricanes' new offensive coordinator had more on his mind than just scheming against the Texas A&M defense. His wife, Krista, was due to have a baby.

She drove herself, her parents and mother-in-law to the game and watched from the press box. She even did a live interview with ESPN, but she didn't have to leave for the hospital.

"I'm doing great. No contractions," she told CaneSport after the game. "We made it through the game, that's all we asked. And we'll have the baby in the morning."

Asked to describe her feelings about the game and being on the brink of delivering their fourth child, she said, "My feelings are ecstatic with the "W," so how can you have anything else? Babies give you good perspective on life. Win or lose we would have had a baby in the morning.

"We're sure going to know that tonight will be a lot better. Sleep a lot better with a `W.' I'm real glad we got through the game and I didn't have to go to the hospital by myself, so that was good. It takes a lot of pressure off Patrick to be able to get through the Thursday night game. That's what we noticed when we saw the schedule and I first knew I was pregnant -- Thursday night game. So the best scenario would be to have it Friday morning, knowing that we had a 10-day week. So we're doing good."

The Nix's 9-year-old daughter, Emma, raced up to her mother, patted her on the stomach and said, "No baby yet."

"No baby yet," said Krista.

While Patrick Nix was unleashing a game plan that the Hurricanes executed superbly in the 34-17 upset of the Aggies, Krista Nix had a game plan of her own in case she had contractions.

"We were going to get to Baptist Hospital," she said. "My doctor was hopefully going to get to the game. I told him if I had to page him at the game at least he could ride with me. So we were good to go.

"And then we had it set up that our security guy would get Patrick there as soon as possible. Not that fourth babies are not real important and that daddies want to be there, but you had a job to do tonight. We had to get through tonight.

"It's like he always says, 'I might miss the first two hours of this one's life, but I'm feeding it for the next two or three years.'"

The Nix's did not know if they would have a boy or girl.

"It's a surprise," Krista said. "All of ours have been surprises."

Before heading to the locker room, Patrick Nix talked briefly with his wife. And he agreed to a brief interview.

"It's hard to put it into words," he said when asked his feelings about the game and baby. "To be honest, we've been so focused on the game. And the one thing about the baby, you know it's going to be there. All you can do is wait for it and hope everybody's healthy. I called my wife constantly during the day, stuff like that. Also got work in. No sense worrying about it or anything like that. You prepare for a game and go do it.

"And the other thing is she had her mom and my mom here, so we were in good hands. So I knew I just had to go do my job and let her do her job."

Asked about his game plan for the Aggies, Nix said, "It wasn't a game plan, it was guys playing. Our players made plays, and that's what we have to have. Kyle [Wright] played great, receivers played great. Darnell [Jenkins] made some huge catches on third down early in the game. And probably we won the game when we got that first drive going and got the touchdown there. Sam [Shields] made a couple big plays, Lance [Leggett] had a big play that could have been a touchdown if we just threw it out there for him. The running backs ... the turnovers are what's disturbing. We've got to correct that, because we can't have that. Overall it was encouraging, the guys played good."

I just got home a couple hours ago after going to the game last night. I left after the field goal that gave us 34 so I missed a TD apparently. I almost missed my flight home cause I was a little hung over from the post game celebration.

Man Cooper is WAY better than James, I don't give a fu*k what anybody says. I was sorely disappointed when the Gator staff backed off of him last year when there was a point when he could have very well been a Gator. I'm not too mad considering we have a lot of talent and will have Moody and possibly Darrel Scott and/or Franklin Green/Jamie Harper.

coop is not better than james.

he's good but he's not james.

James rarely fumbles.
James has better vision
is a stronger runner.

only thing Coop does better is that he has top end speed.

JJ will be a 1st Day pick..bank on it. he's not flashy but he gets 3-4 yards out of nothing.

Seffner Armwood High School OL Matt Patchan has things narrowed down.

A bit.

He says he has three official visits set up, and that he may not take any more than that as he is graduating in December.

The lucky three?

Florida, LSU and Miami.

He's visiting UF for the Auburn game Sept. 29, will be at LSU for its Auburn game Oct. 20. He will have UM leave the final impression on him when he takes in the Canes game against Virginia Nov.10.

That is Miami's final game in the Orange Bowl, and Patchan says he will take the visit with his father and uncle, who are former Cane players.

"That should be exciting," Patchan said. "It'll be a fun game, will be exciting.

"(My father and uncle will) enjoy it. There's going to be a lot of old players there, too, so hopefully they'll have a good time with that. The Orange Bowl will always be a part of hteir lives. They won't forget the times they played."

Patchan says he has no frontrunners among the top three right now.

He says he talks to coaches at each school once a week.

"I talk to (Joe) Pannunzio, (Jeff) Stoutland and coach (Randy) Shannon at Miami," Patchan said.

Of his impression of Stoutland, Patchan said, "I think he's a good coach, very knowledgeable, and the players are really enjoying him as a coach there."

Patchan's team won its first three games, but he missed one and a half of them due to a suspension – he was ejected from the game against Plant High by referees and lost his appeal to have an ensuing one-game suspension lifted.

In the full game he played he had 10 tackles, three sacks and three tackles for losses while playing both ways.

He plays left tackle on the offensive side of the ball.

This dude is the best Guard in Florida, it would be huge if we picked him up and stole him from gaytor country cuz after all, he's from Seffner-Armwood

Altair (TX) Rice Consolidated QB and Cane commitment Taylor Cook has helped his team to a 3-0 start, including a 36-21 win over Brookshire Royal, which plays a classification ahead of Rice High.

Cook says that was his best game of the year – he had two touchdown passes with one interception that he says "wasn't a smart decision."

The 6-foot-7, 210-pounder says he's working hardest on "just getting quicker, stronger, faster, making better reads."

He says the Canes are the only school actively recruiting him – he's told other schools he's a solid UM commitment.

"I'm only visiting Miami," he said.

Cook says he thinks he can come in and compete to start right away.

"I'll be ready," he said. "I'm going to take off baseball (this spring) and will work on getting better and will try to compete and try to win the job when I get there."

How realistic is it that he might play right away?

"I have just as good a chance as Jacory (Harris) has because we're both out of high school," Cook said. "It's going to be tough because Kirby (Freeman) will be a senior, but anything's possible."

Cook says he sees talent on UM's offensive side of the ball that can make this an explosive team.

"They have athletes at receiver and everything," Cook said. "They have to get things together and they'll be fine."

He says he speaks with UM offensive coordinator Patrick Nix every week.

"We just catch up, talk about the week, how they're playing their game, how I'm going to go about my game," Cook said.
