So when a lyricist spits his rhymes, is he lyrising? No, hes rapping. Its like trying to say hip hop and rap are different music.

There is a debate about there being a difference between hip hop and rap.

Example:

Lyricist - Black Thought from The Roots (song: concerto of the desperado)

In the glow of the moon, over the melancholy metro
My poetry is set like a U.F.O.
The maestro, the lyricist concerto
My physical play the role of a vessel
The level of my lyrics law manifesto
My thoughts wrestle and attack with the k!ller instincts
of a gorilla stronger than Samson
Without vanilla my soliloquoy profess my ability to just
stimulate you like the best sensimilla
The halflife the Illadel-L-P-O-phila proceed
hither is my death flower blow your tower to smithe-
-reens to fiends catch another rhyme gripper
Deeper than the meditations of a Hindu worshiper
Unorthodox, hip-hop, minister
Than I Serengeti cheetah my thoughts swifter
you lose your balance when the sound hits ya
So check for the, Fifth Militia
A poet's under pressure stressin that you get the picture
Even if it means you gotta hang over the banister
I pull a microphone on any pistol brandisher
And take advantage of ya because you amateur
Styles gunning down your sound man and manager
What?? This how we do it in the year for nine-six
With this delivering attack on pointless rap sh*t
Breakin MC's down to fractions, tell your squadron
It's time to go to war, Respond/React

Rapper - Rick Ross (song: Push it)

Port of Miami - uhh, port of my candy - uhh
Ain't got nuttin to lose - nah
We supportin the family
{"Push it to the limit!"}
Never traffic for fun.. only traffic for funds
All I seen is the struggle, it's like I'm trapped in the slums
{"Push it to the limit!"}
Workers are barely paid, no water we barely bathe
There better be better days on the way that's on my daddy grave
{"Push it to the limit!"}
I'm pushin it hard.. I'm pushin it South
If he pushin a line.. he pushin for Ross
{"Push it to the limit!"}
I waited and waited.. I done ran out of patience
They hated and hated, left him slow dancin with Satan
{"Push it to the limit!"}
Fresh in my white tee, mac-11 swear to God
I bought my first block, broke it down and to' the block apart
{"Push it to the limit!"}

Lyricist - Andre 300 from Outkast (song: Black Ice from Goodie Mob Album)

Friends, Romans, countrymen lend me yo' eardrums
It was a beautiful day off in the neighborhood
Yellows and greens and blues and browns
and greys and hues that ooze beneath dilapidated woods
Ain't a thing could explain what pertains
to cocaine it's a stain that rains
See summer rolls around n*ggaz holla bout change
Then they steady move them keys like Bob James
Cause old man winter's arrived, the temperature dives
November just died, December's alive
Thus it ain't no typical ride
Just individual's way to bring home
the bacon when bacon was all gone
Makin it our own, takin me all wrong
We've all indulged in the bulge of those no-no's
No you ain't solo, it's even lower levels you can go
Take sun people, put 'em in a land of snow

Rapper - Camron (song: Get Crunk Music from Jim Jones album)

That rooti, tooti, fruity, Louie, what I usually do (what's this?)
This that jump, stop, breathe, whoody-who
Gats in the truck
Platt, platt, pass to a duck
I'm the menace, owe me money, tat, tat, tat, what the fu*k (You owe me
money muthafu*ka!?)
Ya'll reppin' that 5 still
I'm reppin' that 5 mill
Neverland, Thriller, k!lla Cam, Jackson 5 bill (so what!)
Lets style a bit, Italian sh*t, 5 thou on fish
Show you how to get that powder sh*t
Filed the fifth, get out of it
I'm proud of it, its yo' turn, Jim so burned
Live bi*ch, why kiss, on my wrist a glowworm ($50,000)
And I keep heat, cause in these streets (what you hear?)
Just hear woop, woop, whant, whant, beep, beep (that's the cops)
And you rumble, never, me, hit a humble diva (a few of 'em)
And I stay with the white, I got Jungle Fever (nose candy)
So tell Lucccaay (what)
That her boobi's, loco, cookie monster, who he (who am I?)
I'm the 1 the rep the set
Left to left, death to death
You be yellow-taped, outlined, etch-a-sketched...
Killa

Lyricism is more complex on how you connect your words on what your saying. Rapping is just real simple rhyming.

The question should be what is the difference betweeen a Rapper and an MC?

A Rapper-Spits rhymes from a business perspective. Makes music for 106 & TRL Countdowns. Make songs for radio spins. One who makes songs that goes with the trend. A rapper Is Business Savvy. Basically, someone who has taken spitting rhymes as a job and as a means for income.

An MC-Does it for the love and or to put out some type of message. Is not necessarily in it for the money, but wants to be heard. One that wants to voice. One that is doing it for the artform. An MC does it for the love or to try to use his/her voice to say something.

I tried my best to define this. I hope I broke it down correctly. Not to toot my own horn, but nobody in this thread so far is even close in defining as how I am.

I get u.. I feel as tho if u love what u do the money will follow feel me?

A lyricist paints pictures on beats you see visually what they're saying like nas for instance but a rapper is rambling off at the mouth just sayin sh*t that rhymes on the beat, like The Game

pimp you just made yourself look like a pure idiot with that rap and hip hop statement. if they are the same then why do they have diffrent tiltle. thats like sayin god and jesus are the same because their powerful.you obviously dont know snot about about the culture and you got to be under 21 to even be entertaining the though. thats the the main reason RAP has took over and hip hop isnt marketaBLE ANYMORE BECAUSE OF IGNORANCE.the whiteman says they are all the same and puts out young joc as hip hop and a.sswipes like you believe it because of a lack of any true education.stay away from my culture because your mindset its whats destroying it.

to put it in simple terms for u DUMB fuks.........Young Joc, Fabolous, etccccc the list goes on, are rappers

^^^(actually, i like to consider them Pop/Hip-Hop or music for the teeny boppers).

Lyricists are rappers who actually can rap without adding a nursery rhyme to their lines, and actually speak on REAL life topics or different issues in a Complex way.

rappers such as Common, Talib Kweli, Nas, Joe Budden, Eminem, Papoose, Jay-z, Kanye, Lupe Fiasco etccccc......those type of rappers are Lyrical

You idiot.

Hip Hop is a culture, its not music. Rap is the music which is apart of the culture. How do you market a culture? WTF? Seems its people like you who are destroying it.
