It's only the 1st preseason game, but the D was up to it's old B.S. again....too many 3rd down conversions & too soft on coverage...Liked Anthony Smith last night & Santonio & Willie Reid looked comfortable for the limited action they got last night...all in all, there really isn't much to take out of the 1st preseason game, but those are my observations.

Roethlisberger passes his first test
Monday, August 14, 2006

By Teresa Varley
Steelers.com

Saturday's preseason game against the Cardinals was the first test for many wearing the black and gold for the first time, but the player it was probably the biggest test for has worn the uniform before.

Ben Roethlisberger started in Arizona, playing just two months after suffering injuries when he was in a motorcycle accident.

Roethlisberger passed his test.

"He looked fine," said head coach Bill Cowher. "I liked the way he was out there. He looked good in the pocket. He made some plays."

Roethlisberger completed three of four passes for 29 yards in the one series he saw action.

"I felt really good," said Roethlisberger. "Offensively, I thought we moved the ball down the field well in our first series. We didn't get in the end zone. They did a couple of things on defense the last couple of plays that we weren't prepared for but overall I thought we did pretty well."

Roethlisberger also took his first hit of the season, and he was just fine.

"It was good he had the chance to get hit a couple of times," said Cowher. "I told him in the future though I would rather he go down than f!ght to get free. That's what happens. You get out there and don't think about those things. It was good for him to get out there and just play. From that perspective I am glad we got that out of the way."

While everyone from fans to the media were watching Roethlisberger's every move, to him, it was just another game.

"You guys make it a bigger deal than I do," said Roethlisberger. "I went out there with the guys and just treated it like a regular preseason game and I felt just as comfortable and normal as always."

But, despite the normalcy, Roethlisberger still realized how lucky he was to be playing.

"Right before kickoff it hit me to say thank you that I am able to be out here, to put on the jersey to be able to play in front of fans again two months to the day after a really bad accident," said Roethlisberger.

* * *

Another player who passed the test against the Cardinals was rookie safety Anthony Smith. Smith, a third-round draft pick from Syracuse, had two interceptions against the Cardinals.

"Anthony Smith is a good football player," said Cowher. "He's a very natural free safety. I thought he was one kid who showed up today. Ty and Ryan were fine. We were just really bad on third down today. Our third down was atrocious today on defense."

Cowher refutes Bettis' report
Monday, August 14, 2006
By BOB LABRIOLA
Steelers.com

LATROBE, Pa. Jerome Bettis is still making an impact in Pittsburgh, but Coach Bill Cowher stepped up and stuffed the
Bus short of paydirt on Monday afternoon.

Bettis has moved from the Steelers backfield to the NBC-TV broadcast booth, where he is a member of the studio team that will cover a slate of NFL games this season, most of which will be seen on Sunday night.

Last night's preseason game in Cincinnati was Bettis' debut, and this is a portion of what he had to say about Cowher:

"I really think this is the last year for Coach Cowher in Pittsburgh, and I say that because I got the opportunity to talk to him after the season was over, when everything really settled down and he was a different coach, he was a different guy "

The Steelers had Sunday off following their Saturday preseason opener against the Cardinals in Arizona, and Cowher addressed Bettis' comments after the team's only practice on Monday.

"I did not see it, but I heard about the comments," said Cowher. "I spoke with Jerome about it today, and this will be the last time I discuss this whole matter. Jerome and I talked in March, which is about a month after the Super Bowl. There was no confidential information given. I think we were both very reflective at the time.

"He has to understand that last year was a long year, and as you get closer to training camp, time has a way of re-focusing people. There has been a lot of speculation about my future. I'm here to say once again it's purely that speculation. I don't like talking about the contract because we're in camp.

"I love coaching football. I love coaching here. There has been a lot of speculation, and I'm just going to leave it at that. I can't control the future. Again, that takes two sides. I do have two years left on a contract, contrary to what some people may think.

"Last year was a special year, and any normal person would reflect. But as the time came closer to training camp, we had five weeks off and by that fifth week I was ready for training camp. I've been very focused on getting this football team back this year, and that's where my focus is. I don't like talking about anything other than that, anything personal because it really is about our football team. Contract situations and other things take care of themselves, and I'll deflect all of that to management.

"I was very disappointed in what Jerome said, and he understands my position. I wanted to make sure he understood it, because I believe a lot of people think we've been speaking. We haven't been speaking. It was one conversation we had, and there was nothing confidential given at that time."

As a part of NBC's studio show, Bettis will be judged on his ability to provide inside information, insight and analysis. In the media business, guys often try to make a name for themselves by breaking stories. Cowher didn't accuse Bettis of anything untoward, but he also made it clear that he was refuting the report.

"He's over there (in the media), but Jerome is a good guy," said Cowher. "We've had too many good times to let something like that stand in the way. That won't come between us, trust me."

Since he was hired to replace Chuck Noll in 1992, Cowher and the Steelers traditionally have negotiated contract extensions when there were two years left on the existing deal. There was no extension this offseason, and that has led to the questions and the speculation.

"I understand it, I really do, and I understand the questions you have to ask," said Cowher. "But you guys know me. It's not going to affect my passion for this game, and time always has had a way of re-focusing people. I'll just leave it at that."

Following the 21-13 loss to the Cardinals in the preseason opener, Cowher wasn't happy with the number of mental errors, and his opinion didn't change after having a chance to watch the tape of the game.

"We did some good things the other day, but we had too many mental errors and inefficiencies on third down," said Cowher. "If people are going to use us as a barometer, we certainly have to set the barometer high.

"I liked the effort, I really did. They played hard, they ran around. We had too many mental mistakes on offense, and we were inefficient on third down on defense. Those were the two things that stood out. We had some young guys who made a good first impression, and we'll see if they can do it again next week."

INJURY UPDATE: Joey Porter did more in practice on Monday than he did last Thursday, and Cowher said he is coming along. Hines Ward (hamstring) also took part in a portion of practice, and Cowher said, "We're still going to be cautious with that." Also returning were Isaac West and Trai Ess3x. Jerame Tuman (hamstring) didn't work Chukky Okobi, who had neck surgery last Wednesday returned to campus and watched a portion of practice from the sideline.

Cowher: One of our best practices
Tuesday, August 15, 2006
By BOB LABRIOLA
Steelers.com

LATROBE, Pa. The goal of every NFL team at every training camp is to get to a place where it is ready for the start of the regular season. Coach Bill Cowher has made it clear on many occasions that he doesn't believe the Steelers are anywhere close to that destination, but at least Tuesday's afternoon practice was a step in the right direction.

"I thought it was a good practice, actually one of our best practices since we've been up here," said Cowher. "There was good hitting, it was very fast-paced. I liked it."

There hasn't been too much at this camp that has drawn unqualified praise from Cowher, and he didn't go there after Tuesday's practice either. But Cowher knows he has a team that hates to lose, and even though it was just the preseason opener, the Steelers' overall performance in Arizona wasn't good.

"We're not even thinking about breaking camp," said Cowher. "We still have a ways to go up here. The biggest thing is coming off the game we just played, getting ourselves ready for the next one, and it's getting closer to the regular season. You have to be able to take it up a notch.

"We've set very high standards, and we did not get off at the level where we expect to be. That being the case, we need to prepare with that same approach, knowing where we need to be."

As for highlights from the workout, near the top of the list would be a play made by Joey Porter. In his most extensive action since coming off the physically unable to perform list late last week, Porter was in coverage on Willie Parker when Charlie Batch scrambled out of the pocket.

Parker immediately took off deep down the sideline, and Batch laid the ball up for him. But Porter stuck with his man, tracked the football and made a leaping interception. It was an All-Pro type of play by a linebacker.

"He's doing more and more each day," said Cowher. "That's the biggest thing if you're going to get back and get confidence back in that leg."

The session ended with two repetitions of the one-minute drill, and the defense kept the offense out of the end zone both times.

One of the things that disappointed Cowher about the game against the Cardinals was the defense's performance on third downs. On Tuesday, going against Batch, the first-team defense didn't even allow a first down.

After a 6-yard pass to Nate Washington, Batch was sacked by James Harrison to set up a third-and-11. The offense got 4 yards on a pass to Santonio Holmes, but on fourth down, James Farrior stopped Verron Haynes short of the sticks to turn the ball over on downs.

Omar Jacobs was next up, and this was a possession extended by some creative officiating at a couple of crucial moments, but it all was in the interest of getting some young players some quality work. But the bottom line was the defense kept the offense out of the end zone again.

"They understand where we need to be, and the fact is we aren't there, and we're really not that close to being there," said Cowher. "But we took a step in the right direction today."

CAMP NOTES: Based on what Cowher had to say after practice, Duce Staley may be seeing more carries in the next couple of preseason games.

"Duce needs to play," said Cowher. "He needs to get some carries. The last couple of days, I've seen him look like he has a better feel. The guy hasn't run the ball, outside of that one game in Green Bay, for almost two years. It's something where he just needs to play, and he understands that. We need to get him more carries in this preseason, so he gets to where he needs to be."

INJURY UPDATE: Clark Haggans was excused from practice for personal reasons. He is expected to return to work on Wednesday. Isaac West may have aggravated his knee injury. Hines Ward (hamstring), Jerame Tuman (hamstring) and Chukky Okobi (neck) were the only three players not participating on Tuesday afternoon.

Okobi gears up for return
Wednesday, August 16, 2006
By BOB LABRIOLA
Steelers.com

LATROBE, Pa. Chukky Okobi just smiles. If there is a perception out there that he's some kind of gridiron Lazarus, a guy whose career was left for dead only to be resurrected a day later, it's OK with him.

He understands, but he hopes everybody else understands he never saw it that way.

At the end of a Tuesday during the second week of this training camp, Coach Bill Cowher was asked about Okobi's absence from the afternoon practice, and his explanation was a somber one.

"We received some bad news. Chukky may have a herniated disc in his neck, and it could be very significant," said Cowher that day. "He could be having surgery, maybe as early as (Wednesday). It does not look good."

When pressed a little more, Cowher admitted that the injury threatened not only Okobi's 2006 season, but his career as well.

What Okobi had was a ruptured disc, and a fragment from that was pressing on a nerve causing him pain. Dr. Joseph Maroon performed the surgery that removed the fragment that was pressing on the nerve, and the pain was gone. Less than a week later, Okobi had returned to St. Vincent College and had begun running and lifting weights.

Okobi said he's not sure how the disc ruptured, even to the point of being unsure whether it happened during football or whether it happened while lifting weights

"I feel like I could play today," said Okobi. "But just because I feel good doesn't necessarily mean "

It doesn't necessarily mean the disc would allow him to play, just as having the injury in the first place didn't necessarily mean his career was over.

"It never was perceived that way by me," said Okobi. "Nobody ever told me any of that stuff. At no point in time did I ever think that. I knew based on what the doctor told me.

"But when you ask a coach that question, any injury whether it be a knee injury or a back injury or a shoulder injury with all the complications that can happen with surgery, with infections, anything can threaten your career. You know how this game is. So when Coach Cowher said that, he was right. But that's looking at one end of the spectrum, and that's a scenario the head coach, Russ (Grimm), Kevin Colbert, everybody here has to consider. That's something they have to prepare for in case that happens.

"I felt that was not the case. I still can't call exactly when I'll be back, but I knew it never was going to be one of these, 'Whatever happened to him?'"

Exactly one week following surgery, Okobi looks good. He moves freely, he's not stiff. He turns his head to talk to people, and there are no visible scars, nothing that might indicate a surgeon was working on his spine just seven days ago.

"Look at me right now. Honestly, looking at me could you tell I just had neck surgery?" said Okobi. "Maybe I'm not human, maybe they found me after an asteroid hit the earth, sort of like Superman.

"A lot of the panic, the worry, it was not necessarily untrue. It's just that it was the worst case scenario, and as a head coach, as an organization you always have to think: what are we going to do if But I knew it wasn't going to be like that."
