omg you guys are dumb 16 bars=16 lines and thats that

i swear half of you don't know sh*t about rap...usually rappers rap 4 lines/bars in 10 seconds...eg. every 2.5 or can vary a rapper spits 1/2 a bar...however depnding on their style it varies but they always try and spit 2 bars every 5 seconds

Looking in the emcee chamber, I think people are confused. Talking about "lets spit 8 bars", and they spit a full 16 lines of rap. Most of these lines they're typing would take up a full bar to spit over, yet they are spitting twice as many lines as they say bars.

All you people who are saying poetically a bar is two lines, maybe by definition, but in rap 2 lines is not a bar. The most used format in rap is a line per bar. Some rappers spit faster than others and can fit a bunch of sh*t into a bar, but the general rhyme format is one line per bar.

When I see these cats in the emcee chamber saying "drop 8 bars", then they spit 16 full lines (some of these lines prolly wouldn't even fit within 1 musical bar) I think people are lost.

Here's a couple of random verses copied from the emcee chamber section, where cats claim to be spitting 8 bars, you tell me how the hell you spit this in 8 bars

-----8 bars-----
Won’t keep you guessin’…my hands lethal weapons, superior to nines
That’ll re-arrange “Denz” parts………..like I’m doin’ interior design
Your skills? Inferior to mine- once your gone from my bleedin’ violence
BX won’t suffer much…after all, you’re the only one needin’ “Guydenz”
Readin’ my sh*ts inspired you; for newbs, that’s what my words’ll do
I would drop a personal………problem is, nobody here’s heard of you!
I’ve seen a verse or two……but oddly enough, I still ain’t seein’ ya niche
But it’s clear you have “talents a-broad”- no, I mean ya good at bein’ a bi*ch
So I’m seein’ ya sitch; you come out, and none of the other dytes respect ya
In other words you ~Can’t-Sell-Out~….................a little like ya record
I know what I type affects ya…I’ll expose the style of ya life with this, too
Cuz you do so much “hom-in’ and blowin” thatchu could Guy’d a missle
My lines’ll hitchu…Bring you pain from emission of flames thru muh dishin’
Beat me?...Yous a =Dream-Indict=…but hey, who can blame you for wishin’?
I maimed you with this one…see, I only sprouted this key’d out of intrigue
But next time- much like my skills compared to yours- stay out of my league…

-----8 bars-----
I punch with perfection, knock you out quicker then a lethal injection,
I suggest using a different mascara after this battle for your black and blue complexion!
I send tremors through the ground to knock you down with my fire spits,
I’d tell you that your “judgment day” was at hand, but you were already hit by the “Apocalypse”!
Losing hurts Dyne? Good cause I’ll rip you to shreds by releasing the hounds,
I’ll “shoot you at a boxing match”, cause that’s the only way to you I could be “losing rounds”!
I bring death, so prepare for no mercy when messing with me, just stay low,
The Dark Ages are upon you so you the Roman Empire the way your “lost with the info”!
Dyne gonna choke, spittin a "winded verse" cause I keep him on the run,
It’s a shame son; you would have a chance to win your battles if you showed up for one!
Shatter your bones, leave you "crip”pled, choke ya and leave ya “blue” in the face,
Truly a Disgrace, a quick “Dyne and Dash” ate your a.ss up; no wonder “fruit” is the taste!
I took care of your old crew, so they won’t “Rest in Peace” soon,
Just call me a “Lunar Eclipse” the way I’m easily “overshadowing White Moon”!
I strike quicker then a sonic boom, so nah I dare Dyne to mess-wit-this, ,
I’ll pop him like a cork and bottle his crazy foreign a.ss so I'll call him““ludacris / luda-crys”!"

if you know how to write you would know that 16 lines is a 16 bars.
when i write a 16 , meaning a regular verse (16 lines on a piece of paper) , off an average industry beat.. the chorus ALWAYS comes in perfect.
those text flows someone posted where actually enough to lay a verse on a track, they were 16's. if you count rhyming halfway in your bar as being two lines, then you might think a bar is 2 lines . like someone said earlier with the lil wayne example, that was 2 bars.

Yeah, if you break it down by the beat, or poetically perhaps a bar is 2 lines. But when it comes to the lyrical breakdown / format, the general standard is a line a bar. Like mentioned already different rappers have different rhyme schemes / speeds and may fit more into the bars.

But there is no way in hell the verses I posted above could be 2 lines a bar. These textcees need to get the facts right.

Intro To Rhyming 101

There is a massive misconception going around on internet messageboards pertaining to the measurement of "1 bar".

Most people thinks 1 bar is as such:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Originally posted by IncorrectEmcee The cat had a bat and thought he was all that. He use the bat to smash the hat flat as a mat.//(1)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is not one bar. This is two lines together known as a "bar-couplet" which is two bars. The correct format would have been like this:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Originally posted by ElevatedEmcee The cat had a bat and thought he was all that.(1)
He use the bat to smash the hat flat as a mat.//(2)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are two bars here indicated in the proper format. The technically accepted definition of a rap bar is 'one line that sets up a word to be rhymed upon or rhymed with'. A lot of people think 2 bars = 1 bar because a "bar-couplet" dosen't sound complete without the other bar, but it's not one bar. In music (which is what lyrics are written to) a "bar" = two snares or one "measure". The BPS is going to determine how many words per snare hit you can fit. Keep in mind that the rhyming word is delivered at the end of a beat hit (which is the snare in this case) which is where you get the bar from. If a beat only lasted 16 bars, your last rhyming word will be at the exact time the song ended, a.ssuming you have anything that resembles a "flow". But to get on the more technical side, you can break it down into this simple formula:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
one line = one bar = one measure = 2 snares = 1 snare -&- 1 high hat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once again, the terminoligy that a lot of us use as a "bar" is actually a Bar Couplet. I'll get some help from my good friend the official on the English Language; Myriam Webster to help clarify further:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
bar: (bär)

a. A vertical line drawn through a staff to mark off a measure.
b. A "measure". <---I included the definition on the bottom of this post.

Couplet: (küplît)

1. A unit of verse consisting of two successive lines, usually rhyming and having the same meter and often forming a complete thought or syntactic unit.
2. Two similar things; a pair.
3:\Coup"let\ (-l?t), n. [F. couplet, dim. of couple. See Couple, n. ] Two taken together; a pair or couple; especially two lines of verse that rhyme with each other.

That's an excerpt from Websters Unabridged Dictionary which you can find online with ease. I'll even throw in the defiition of the word "measure" in the musical sense so you can see what a fu*king absolute jackass you've made of your self:

Measure: (mézhér)

17: Music. The metric unit between two bars on the staff; a "bar".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With this knowledge, it's quite easy to observe other mainstrem rappers. Many rap Collabos and individual verses are divided into 16 bars. Each is given 16 bars with the finisher usually given 22 or 32. This is just the simple formula studios use. Now go turn on any hip-hop collabo where a sh*tlaod of mainstreamers come together, and start counting the lines. Count the lines per verse: 16. Always has been and always will be 16. Very few labels and recording studios deviate from this formula because all - and I mean ALL- rappers get paid per 16. You'll even hear them talk about it sometimes.

If for what ever reason you were offered a spot on a track, you'd be getting paid for 16. If you got paid for 16 bars, you'd be getting paid for 16 lines. If you submit 32 (as you would with the incorrect 2lines/bar format), half of them won't be recorded. That's a basic fact of studio time.

it all depends on different variables(BPM,that specific Rapper, etc....) but most rappers use the bar couplet joint when they want the song to be longer.
