On that Big 10 site...it says Michigan has 15, OSU has 14 football championships...but I don't get why they only get credited for 11...the same with OSU....you said they only have 6.....but on the Big Ten site they have 14?
I just don't get the discrepancies
That stems from the old system of picking champions. Way back you had quite a few publications that would recoginize a team as champion, and therefore you get flucuations in the total numbers.
There have been NINTEEN times that a publication has called Ohio State the national champion in it's exsistence....but only 6 are "consensus" national championships.
Michigan has been recognized TWENTY-THREE times in the same manner....but only have 3 "consensus" national championships.
There are problems everytime you do these. I dont agree with the 3 for Michigan, case in point 1901. They Michigan finished 11-0 and beat Stanford 49-0 in the Rose [the only bowl game played] but that isn't considered as a "consensus" national title. I haven't done my full research on it but I think that has something to do with Harvard going 12-0.
