Illmatic is my all time favorite album, but Enter the 36 is definitely in my top 10 all time prolly top 5. Up that hight though it is really just splitting hairs. The Wu albums was definitely more influential on NY hip hop, but I have always liked Illmatic more.

36 chambers to me is in my top 2 or 3 and i can still listen to it straight thru, and i do alot...illmatic is somewhere in my top 10 but new york state of mind is really the only joint off it i can take anymore. i'll always go with wu, even if its wu versus jesus

Wow are you guys serious. How can you say that illmatic didnt have as big as an impact as 36 Chambers. GTFO. First of all when illmatic dropped that was the sign that the East was on the top of the game with that one. I love 36 chambers but seriously its illmatic. Nas did it by himself and had a bigger impact when the album dropped. Yes i am a nas Fan

when i compare these, i look beyond just beats and rhymes...i'd give Nas the edge on lyrics and impact, with Wu having the edge on beats and creativity...

but the thing that separates them the most was how they were put together...Nas crafts his in a way that perfectly melds each song together in a New York narrative...each song is equally beautiful and complements each track around it...all the songs on 36 Chambers were excellent, but the way they put the album together almost makes it seem like a mixtape with skits...i'm not taking anything away from Wu for that, because it's still a classic album easily...

but Illmatic wins for being the better crafted and more impactful album...

Um, I honestly like Cuban Linx and Liquid Swords both more than 36 Chambers, so it's obviously Illmatic for me.

I gotta go with Illmatic, but of course 36 Chambers is one of my favorites also. Honestly, I would put OB4CL ahead of 36 Chambers as the best Wu album.

Actually, I say Illmatic because its lyrically superior with more depth and deeper subject matter. The old school jazzy tracks for Nas the Prophet to spit over are laid down by legendary producers and not only that, but Nas carries the album from the vocal side all on his own, save for a classic verse from Az.

Enter The Wu: More hardcore and innovative

Illmatic: More lyrical and relevant.

Both Masterpieces of Hip-Hop. Let's leave it at that and enjoy them.

However, I'll always prefer OB4CL and Liquid Swords over 36 Chambers, both lyrically and production wise. Those albums both had a clear direction of where the album was going. When I listen to 36 Chambers, to me it is much more flat-out hardcore sh*t that moves crowds at a concert... it can't touch most of the tracks off Liquid Swords or Cuban Linx, IMO. But that's just me...

The two greatest albums of all time... Every time i'm asked this question, I alternate because I simply can not chose a favorite between these two. I voted 36 Chamber though because I knew Illmatic would be winning. The combination of RZA's production and 9 incredible MC's makes 36 Chambers untouchable.
