LEWIS PARKER

Rapper Lewis Parker was born in London but grew up in Canterbury with fellow producer DJ Bias. While still only a teenager Lewis released "B Boy Antiks" and "Rise" through Trevor Jackson's Bite It! label. The EP and 12" featured some of the finest production to come out of the UK hiphop scene, more reminiscent of Pete Rock and DITC than Hijack or Gunshot. It took a long time for him to sign an album deal, eventually going with Massive Attack's Virgin imprint "Melankolic" where he released "Masquerades & Silhouettes" in 1998. The brief album captured much of the promise shown on his early 12"s and the Massive Attack connection and resultant tour gained him a large audience around the world. His more recent work has been less consistent but his best work remains amongst the most musical Hiphop in the world.

Ok, here's my first attempt
HIJACK - The Terrorist Group

Biography
Hijack came out of Brixton, London in 1988 when they signed to Music Of Life, and they dropped their debut single, the now legendary, 'Style Wars'. Their next release was the brilliant DJ Supreme produced 'Hold No Hostage' backed with 'Doomsday Of Rap', probably two of the best tunes ever to be released by a UK act, in my opinion. It was a release that grabbed the attention of hip hop fans all over Europe, with DJ's Supreme and Undercover showing the world how the UK DJ's do it and Kamanchi Sly dropping his trademark quick delivery.

Still on the underground scene, but with recognition growing all over Europe, ICE T heard Hijack on the radio and decided to sign them to his Rhyme Syndicate Records label in the USA. Their first release on the label, in 1989, was the Batman themed 'The Badman Is Robbin' which went on to reach the UK's Top 40 charts, giving it's listeners a taste of things to come with it's opening lines 'Taken From The Forthcoming Album, The Horns Of Jericho by Hijack'.

In between 'The Badman Is Robbin' and 'The Horns Of Jericho' album, Hijack released 'Style Warriors Revenge' back on the Music Of Life label as a stop gap while Hijack were waiting for their album to be released by Warners Brothers after the collapse of ICE T's Rhyme Syndicate Records.

Finally, 'The Horns Of Jericho' was unleashed to it's awaiting public in 1991 and is arguably the greatest hip hop album ever to be released outside of the USA. With classics like 'The Phantom Of The Opera' and 'Hijack The Terrorist Group', it was a groundbreaking release from a UK act, that set the standards for others to follow. Unfortunately, Warner Brothers never released the album to the US market and Hijack parted company with the label. Soon after the group split due to musical differences, DJ Supreme went on to launch Backbone Records, working with such artists as The Icepick. Kamanchi Sly and DJ Undercover went on to set up Reservoir Records as Mr Pink and Mr Blonde, releasing two singles and re-releasing 'The Original Horns Of Jericho' a limited edition double album featuring previously unreleased tracks and an instrumental record.

Kamanchi Sly then went on to become Unknown MC and set up Soulfood Records in 1998 with his brother DJ Pied Piper, they went on to produce for footballer Andy Cole on his single 'Outstanding'. They managed to reached the Number 1 spot with garage tune 'Do You Really Like It'.

In 2004 Kamanchi Sly is now back in the UK hip hop scene and has released two EP's on his new label Catalyst Recordings, look out for his new album 'The Holy Grail' this year, 2005. Many people would pay a lot of money to get Hijack back together again, I'm one of them, but, the chances seem remote, unfortunately.

Mighty Ethnicz

Original Members
Sir Drew, Flex, Iroc

Members
Sir Drew, Flex, Ola, Tosh

Biography

Mighty Ethnicz were formed in 1985 by Sir Drew, Flex and Iroc. Sir Drew was previously in the Newtrament Krew along with DJ Mr Mix of the 2 Live Crew and made 'London Bridge' as Newtrament, widely acknowledged as the first British rap record, before Mr Mix went back to Miami to form the 2 Live Crew.

Flex was working with the Cash Crew and met Sir Drew whilst recording 'Known 2 Be Down' a low budget compilation album in 1985. Mighty Ethnicz was formed and recorded 'Any R'ddm' with Skip Mcdonald, Adrian Sherwood and Doug Wimbush (Sugarhill Gang and Living Color) and Dominic.

They released 'Any R'ddm' in 1986 on their own label and it was licensed in Jamaica by the Tuff Gong label and reached number 1 for four weeks. Then came 'Freestyle' again released on their own label and in 1990 'Harmony Hall' was released. 'Harmony Hall' was on the Radio One A List for three weeks and was heading for the Top 40 until the distribution company went bankrupt.

In 1991 Sir Drew moved to L.A. where he did some recording with Kid Frost, Tony G and 2 Live Crew. Flex also went to L.A. and recorded with Scott Hobbs (Take Em Under Productions) and did a number of live shows.

In 1992 they returned to London to continue working with another MC called Ola from Brooklyn, New York, they then hooked up with Tosh from Vinyl Solution. Previously Ola had performed with a number of groups and opening up for acts such as Tribe Called Quest, Kwame and Prince Akeem and Tosh had previously done remixes for R. Kelly, Yo Yo Honey and Bizarre Inc.

Then they released 'Can I Get A Deal', another self financed release that got Major Label interest.

Caveman

Members
MCM, The Principle, Diamond J

Biography

Caveman were a British hip hop group originally from High Wycombe consisting of MCM, the Principal and Diamond J. They were the first British hip hop group to be signed to a major US label, Profile Records, and quickly established themselves as one of the UK's most popular and versatile acts.

History
The group's first release were the twelve inches Victory (Profile, 1990) and Fry You Like Fish (Profile, 1990), and the I'm Ready EP (Profile, 1990). This quickly established their jazz based style of hip hop, influenced by US artists such as Gang Starr. The song I'm Ready, however, took as its basis a sample of Jimi Hendrix's Crosstown Traffic and showed early on a liking for the harder style that they adopted for later releases. I'm Ready was an extremely popular song, and still regularly turns up on hip hop compilations today.

Their debut album, Positive Reaction (Profile, 1990), was released to much critical acclaim and cemented their reputation as one of the UK's top hip hop acts. The following year, the group released The Victory EP (Profile, 1991) and then took a break from recording. When they returned with The Whole Nine Yards . . . And Then Some (Profile, 1992) the group had undergone a radical change in style. Whilst their earlier sound had been predomninantly based on mellow jazz samples, the new album was predominantly bass heavy, hardcore hip hop. The move was a success, and today their second album is Caveman's most in demand recording, often selling above its original asking price and considered a rare find.

Shortly after the release of the album, the group decided to go their separate ways. MCM had a short-lived solo career, releasing some twelve inches and guesting on other artists' tracks - such as Dodge City Productions' Understand This from their Steppin' Up and Out (4th & Broadway, 1993) album. The Principal went on to produce other artist's tracks, such as a remix of Run DMC's Ooh, What'cha Gonna Do? from their Down with the King (Profile, 1993) comeback album. Diamond J went on to provide scratches for Maxim's Hell's Kitchen (XL Recordings, 2000) album. None ever reached the same level of success as they did with Caveman.
