Aug 18 - Crime State Rankings 2005

Crime State Rankings 2005 Names Nevada as the Nation’s Most Dangerous State, North Dakota Repeats as the Safest State

LAWRENCE, KS — For the second consecutive year, Nevada today was named the nation’s most dangerous state. The announcement was made in Crime State Rankings 2005, an annual reference book published by Morgan Quitno Press, a Lawrence, Kansas-based independent research and publishing company. At the opposite end of the rankings scale, North Dakota once again was the nation’s safest state, an honor that it has held for eight of the 12 years that the company has issued its awards.

"Nevada is the nation’s fastest growing state and with those rapid changes come struggles with crime and other problems,” said Scott Morgan, President of Morgan Quitno Press. “Its violent crime rate increased nearly 8% in the five years from 1999 to 2003, while nationally, violent crime rates have decreased 9%.”

The 12th annual Most Dangerous and Safest State designations were based on six basic crime factors reported in Morgan Quitno’s just-released annual reference book, Crime State Rankings 2005. Factors considered were rates per 100,000 population for murder, r*pe, robbery, aggravated a.ssault, burglary and motor vehicle theft. States are ranked based on how they compare to the national average for each crime category. The findings are based on 2003 crime statistics, the most recent final state data available from the FBI.

Joining Nevada at the top of the rankings list (in descending order) were Louisiana, Arizona, Maryland and South Carolina. On the safer end of the rankings scale immediately preceding North Dakota were Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and South Dakota.

“There was no change to the order of the top and bottom five states between this year’s and last year’s results,” said Morgan. He added, “While our study is hardly good news for Nevada, there is a bright spot: the state’s violent crime rate dropped last year, perhaps signaling a new, downward trend in crime for Nevada.”

The Most Dangerous/Safest State Award is one of six designations announced annually by Morgan Quitno Press in conjunction with publication of its annual statistical reference books. These other annual awards name the nation’s Safest City and Metro Area (based on data from City Crime Rankings), the Most Livable State (based on data from State Rankings), the Healthiest State (based on data from Health Care State Rankings), the Smartest State (based on data from Education State Rankings), and the Most Improved State (based on data from State Trends.)

Additional information about 2005's Most Dangerous and Safest States is available through the Morgan Quitno website at

Here are the population makeup of the five "safest" states:

North Dakota
* 91.7% White
* 4.9% Native American
* 1.2% Hispanic
* 0.6% Asian
* 0.6% Black
* 1.2% Mixed race

Vermont
* 96.2% White
* 0.9% Asian
* 0.9% Hispanic
* 0.5% Black
* 0.4% Native American
* 1.2% Mixed race

Among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, Vermont ranks:

* 2nd in its proportion of Whites
* 41st in its proportion of Asians
* 49th in its proportion of Hispanics
* 48th in its proportion of Blacks
* 29th in its proportion of Native Americans
* 39th in its proportion of people of mixed race

Maine
* 96.5% White non-Hispanic
* 0.7% Hispanic
* 0.7% Asian
* 0.5% Black
* 0.6% American Indian
* 1% Mixed race

New Hampshire
* 95.1% White (making New Hampshire the third whitest state, trailing only Maine and Vermont)
* 1.7% Hispanic
* 1.3% Asian
* 0.7% Black
* 0.2% Native American
* 1.1% Mixed race

South Dakota
* 88.0% White
* 0.6% Black
* 1.4% Hispanic
* 8.3% Native American (Third highest in the Continental U.S.)
* 0.6% Asian
* 1.3% Mixed race

From this data, you see that the five "safest" states are also the five "whitest" states where whites often make up 90-95% of the population and blacks make up an average 0.6% of the population. It is interesting to note though, that in Nevada (the country's most "dangerous" state) hispanics make up more than triple the population amount of blacks.

they're also the 5 states that no one would really wanna live in either.....thats also first time i've ever seen data separate out "mixed race" as a separate category....very interesting

Obviously whites and native americans have no problem with living there, so your statement is pretty contridictive to the facts. However, you could say "they're also the five states blacks and hispanics don't want to live in." Obviously, because they are hardly and blacks and hispanics living there and the fact that these are the top five states with the lowest crime rates.

Oklahoma is way more dangerous than NY? I don't buy it. The formula needs to be weighted. If a bunch of OK kids get aggrevated a.ssault and some NY kids get murder one than it shouldn't be equal when you are measuring "safest". If you're talking about crime rates OK but "safest" is different.

States with less diversity are always going to be safer...racism, hate, and economic oppression don't exist on as large a scale when everyone's the same color.

Hmmmmmmm, but the survey or whatever data they took is about crimes all together, and well oklahoma probably got alot more crimes that never happen in ny. Oklahoma got chicken fu*kers, cow tippers, 1st cousin fu*kin, 2nd cousin fu*kin, 3rd cousin fu*kin, horse abuse, poison by chicken egg, illegal mud wrestlen, a bunch of sh*t that happens there everyday that would never happen in ny

u can't believe what these state studies say because not all crimes are caught or recorded and there is no way they went everywhere

although you cant argue facts

take a look at the population density in all of the safest places becasue if there is more people crammed into a smaller area there will obviously be more black people and people of all races and there will obviously be more tension due to more competitions
