The price of a new paint job

Hello,

My Black 1998 Honda Accord LX is in need of a little TLC.

I'm in the Marine Corps and stationed in Yuma, Arizona. The sun here is ravaged the paint job and left several "bald" spots in the paint job.

I want to repaint the car Satin Silver (as the winds and dry heat give a nice coat of sand that's noticeable on the black paint). And wanted to know if any of you knew the going rate for a good paint job. I don't really want to pay over $1,000.

They got these comercials here advertising 300 dolla paint jobs at Maaco. Although i've only head horror stories about them. Remember, if you are changing the color and trying to keep it consistent, the price will be wayyy higher.

maaco charges you 300$ for a certain amount of time they put into your car. If you got a lot of sh*t they need to fix up, its less time they spend painting.

sand the car yourself, and they'll do a good job...

ya know?

the key to a good paint job is all in the prep anybody can actually paint a car thats the easy part. the first thing ur gonna say "MY CAR AINT GOT NO DENTS" wrong if its an 88 car that has never been painted u have plenty of dents that wont show up to the nekkid eye. however once u get new shiny a*s paint on the car every little imperfection is gonna stand out, and it looks terrible. all maaco or any econemy shop is gonna do is paint the car. take ur car to a real body shop let them fix all the dings so ur body is smooth like new again. it make cost a few extra bucks but its worth it in the end. next changing the color comes with a lot of problems also. an econemy shop is jus gonna scuff ur old paint and paint over it. a real body shop will take the paint all the way down to the metal build back up with surfacer and then paint the car. also with changin the color u have to deal with painting door jambs and the inside of the trunk and the hood. if u want it done right. this alone may cost anywhere between $300-$500 extra. so the thing to remember when it comes to paint is that u get what u pay for

i got my old car painted at 1 day paint and body for like 1200 but it was jus a normal gloss color not metalic or pearl. metalics or pearls are like double in price cuz they put multiple coats of paint and clear coats and lasts a lot longer.

Thank you everyone. Hmm...I guess the only thing I can do is take it into one of the local body shops. Yuma is a small town (population 100,000), so we don't have Maaco and what not. I'll see what the estimate is and if it's cheaper, I'll stay with the same color. My problem is black gets dirty real quickly in this weather.

Maaco aint the worst place in the world (See Earl Scheib if you have those in your area for the worst)....The cat who posted about the prep work was dead on....

The old saying still remains "you get what you pay for"....Ive seen some sh*tty Maaco paint jobs and ive seen some nice one's. Best thing to do it go to the shop and talk to the painter, hit him off with some extra dough for his pocket and not for the company and you'll get a damn good paint job. Pay Maaco the $300 they asking and line your painters pocket with the other $700, better believe he'll bust his a*s to make sure your getting what you want with that extra dough in his pocket.

But 1K is kinda low if your looking for a "quality" paint job and changing from the original color (from any place other than a in/out kinda paint shop)

It would be best to paint the whole car, unless you had a brand new car otherwise a can almost guarantee your paint has faded some from the "original" color over the years. Newly painted body kit on a faded car would look like pure a*s.
