The most underrated thing about MJ game was that he was genuinely really explosive. You see how often n1ggas was going for contests from good position and it didn't matter because if you jumped at the same time as him he was already higher than you. If you weren't early he was yammin that bi#ch.

He the GOAT and it isn't up for debate but when you watch n1ggas like Vince explosiveness jumps off the screen. It isn't just jumping high it's getting to that height quicker than the other n1ggas who also jump high.

Also it's what made Dikembe such a good shot blocker.

I guess that’s why the dunk contest is so much more entertaining these days.

To be fair the biggest issue with the dunk contest is that it's been going so long and there are so many of them plus we have creative dunkers we can just watch online on a random Wednesday that it's hard to do something original in the actual NBA contest at this point. There was a point when a honey dip was the pinnacle of jumping ability in a lot of people minds and now that's some run of the mill sh1t.

Even free throw line dunks are "ho hum" at this point.

Players today are so much more athletic they say. How can we keep saying that and then make excuses like this. If players are more athletic and more skilled these days they should easily be able to have better showmanship and creativity than past NBA dunk participants. If free throw line dunks are so mundane why don’t we see more participants at least try them for the nostalgic factor or add a new element to it like a windmill from the line dunk. It’s because it’s a myth that the current players are more skilled and athletic. That’s why a non NBA athlete keeps winning the contest. Jordan’s era was actually the most skilled era due to the fact it was the only era where athletes had to develop their skills in college for at least two years.

What's really crazy is Mike had a higher vert than Vince

I can say it enough.... 48 inch vert and he knew how to use that sh1t
One of the best layup packages ever
It's tough for the youth who never seen him play man I hated and loved him at the same damn time
But by the end of his Bulls run this Knick fan couldn't help but root for him and The Bulls
Crazy

MJ exceeded Fandom for us. I was a Lakers fan and Kevin Johnson was my favorite player but you had to love MJ. I never met anyone who actually hated MJ you just didn't like that he played for someone else

You are missing the point. Players are more athletic as a whole. Obviously the athletic, absolute genetic freaks even 50 years ago are impressive to this day but now you got mfs at your local 24hr fitness with 45 inch verts doing 720s and sh1t….

Not sure how this can be considered a myth. Modern players took inspiration and improved on it, year by year. That is literally how humans work in every walk of life.

Players may have more tools to optimize performance, but being better trained doesn’t make you genetically more athletic. Many athletes from past eras would dominate today if given the same advantages and vice versa. Athleticism hasn’t improved drastically resources and systems have. Also a big factor is athletes today skip out on fundamentals training to focus more on the verticals and athletic performance side of the game as it is a faster paced game today. With that faster pace comes more opportunity to showcase athleticism. In a slower pace more strategic style skill needed to be more refined. Even in today’s game the top performers lately until SGA haven’t been super athletes. Jokic and doncic aren’t athletic at all but dominate with skill. Any guy with a 45 inch vert doing 720 dunks just proves my point athleticism is overrated when you don’t have the skill to match. That’s what made the 90s so great it was the peak era of super athleticism combined with refined skill and fundamentals.

Similar to how he dunked on barkley and barkley used to block alot of peoples shots

he just got up faster and he was strong

[see tweet]

Dudes rarely ever got up faster than him which is crazy to think about

amd by the way that dunk on Laimbeer was a foul, no foul called

[see tweet]

Not only did he have that quick twitch explosivesness, he knew to stay up longer by using the defenders body or using his legs for wings to help glide. Just different.

Plus no NBA player is going to risk hurting himself trying to practice the same type of dunks them pro dunkers be performing.

Genetic freaks exist in every era. MJ was crazy explosive but people forget that he was also a gym rat who worked on his body like a mad man. He worked to get more explosive and athletic and sustain it. A lot of guys after him are just as gifted more but don’t put the work in afterwards to maximize it. That’s the difference.
