"Around the 25 minute mark, Scoop posed the question if Hov ever surpassed Biggie lyrically and Styles matter-of-factly replied, “No I don’t. I don’t say anyone surpassed Biggie because Big didn’t have a fair shot to be around as long as he should’ve and I believe hje set the tone. I believe in Hip Hop, we do too many comparisons, especially of people who are not around. I don’t think jay-Z makes it to where he’s at, The L.O.X. makes it to where he’s at…a bunch of us if it wasn’t for Big and ‘Pac actually setting a certain tone, standardand bar in the rap game for you to keep up to the bar.”

I had put this in the other thread, so gonna copy paste here... Real good topic tho... If only people discussed real hip hop conversations still here...

 Bklynzfinest said 🔗
Nah, disagree. Longevity in music and arts matter even more than other things than sports precisely because the standards changed. Big and Pac helped set standards by building on others who set standards before them and that's what others did after them. Technology changes, audience changes, sounds change...when the standards need to be reinvented to fit the time you're in, that definitely matters. And it ain't just hip hop where people compare...I just think that's something overdone by newer generations, though it was always present in hip hop to compare, hence the competition and battles.

I do agree with him tho that when ur talking about lyrically and just who's the best skillfully, u can't say anyone 'surpassed' someone else especially if folks are unique. If ur partial to big and/or Pac's music and style then nobody else will nor can do them better than them...so 'surpass' doesn't make sense when u talking skills or music. If we're talking legacy and overall GOAT arguments now, then yeah we can talk about surpassing.

Agreed.

Just like Kool G, Rakim, BDK set the tone for Big and Pac's era, Big and Pac set the tone for most of the late 90s to mid 2000s

They found out each other didn't write at the same time I want to say it was Brooklyn Finest.

Kent says BIG didn't write all the time but never did afterwards. But he would say that
🔗

He didn't get it from Jay because that was their 1st session together.

here's the thing about these questions and debates

there's no agreed set definitions, but people argue away anyway

imagine basketball games with no set height for the rim or boundaries

how do we measure "lyricism"? and how do we define "surpass"

without setting the terms and definitions, it's just a subjective circle jerk

i got Big at #2 and Jay at #4

to me, Big says more that hits harder with less words and simplicity

and Jay is clever and slick and more philosophical with introspection

for me, Big is more something i feel where Jay is more something i listen to

but i don't ever actually think about those things when i listen to either

i think, to be fair, if you're going to compare Big and Jay lyrically

then you should only compare Ready To Die and Life After Death to Reasonable Doubt and Vol. 1 & 2

Get tf outta here. This n1gga be having his lame moments as well. I'm not even a Jay fan but know he was top tier. Now Big style might have been smoother but Jay had lyrics just as good.

That's why it should be based off Hov's first 2 albums since BIG only made 2

Stories of BIG writing in his sleep before hitting Jay with that stimulus package.

The respect was mutual, Jay wouldn’t start the monopoly scene until BIG got there… EVERYONE there waited and you know who was at the table.
