SACRAMENTO, Calif. (TND) — California businesses have purportedly cut roughly 10,000 jobs since Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 1228, which increased the state’s minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 per hour.

The figure comes from the Hoover Institution, which is a public policy think tank affiliated with Stanford University. The organization reported in April that 1.3% of California fast food jobs have been eliminated since September 2023.

More fast-food job losses are coming as the new minimum wage took effect earlier this month. This includes losses at Pizza Hut and Round Table Pizza which are in the process of firing nearly 1,300 delivery drivers," the Hoover Institution reported. "El Pollo Loco and Jack in the Box announced that they will speed up the use of robotics, including robots that make salsa and cook fried foods."
The president of the California Business and Industrial Alliance (CABIA) told FOX Business this week the new law forced some companies to cut hours as a cost-saving measure.

"California businesses have been under total attack and total assault for years," CABIA President Tom Manzo said. "It's just another law that puts businesses in further jeopardy."

Gov. Newsom signed AB 1228 in September and authorized the creation of the Fast Food Council, which sets restaurant standards for minimum wage and develops proposals for health and safety standards. He argued the law was “one step closer” to fairer wages and healthier working conditions since it gave fast food workers a “stronger voice” and “seat at the table.”

Manzo told FOX Business that officials were living in a “fantasyland” if they thought minimum wage increases would help workers.

It's a starter industry," he said. "You get a job as a kid working in a fast food restaurant and you learn some good work ethic and that takes you into life."
The average age of a fast food worker last year was 22, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In a recent LendingTree survey, more than three-fourths of Americans said fast food was a luxury, pointing to increasingly high prices as the cause. The cost of "limited service meals" has risen 4.8% over the past year, according to Consumer Price Index figures released last month.

"You can only raise prices so much," Manzo said. "And you're seeing it. People are not going to pay $20 for a Big Mac. It's not going to happen."

President Joe Biden has said inflation is his top economic priority. In February, Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., argued that increasing prices over the course of the Biden administration have created frustration among Americans.

“A nearly 18% rise in prices since Joe Biden took office is one of the many reasons the American people are not buying the Democrats’ out-of-touch sales pitch on the economy,” Rep. Smith said.

It was obvious this was going to happen

These politicians are cold blooded

They can’t be that stupid. They knew people would lose jobs but they’re so hell bent on stamping their name on some law that they don’t care about the casualties.

Same sh1t happened with Obama Care. Whether you agree with it or not it was obvious when they left big loopholes with “if the employee is full time you need to provide health care” they were going to cut everyone’s hours.

These politicians are ruthless.

I wonder where the expectation that one is supposed to be able to afford a car, rent, groceries and spending money working at McDonald's
emoji
where does it say every job position, at every company, should be able to support all that?

And also... Every businessman will always find a way for 1 worker to wear 5 hats instead of 5 different workers wearing 5 different hats.

It’s amazing to see honestly. There are too many people who don’t cook on a consistent basis for the general populace to be so unappreciative to the people who are literally feeding their families. You want good service, quality food but all at the expense of the employee. The business is making record profits year after year & yet the average person can’t make a living, have good affordable insurance & work full time at these companies.

Yep. It's like clockwork. Company does a bunch of employee cuts, salty people who look down upon certain jobs blame the wages, then those same companies announce their big time profits and the cycle continues

I don't get why fastfood is where they decided to implement this.

I know there are other industries that are underpaid where this should have been mandated.

Healthcare? School systems?

Maybe you and your dumbfu#k ilk that repeat this should actually educate yourself with what FDR intended by instituting “minimum wage” and what exactly “minimum wage” means.

Stupid motherfu#kers.

They give no fu#ks about schools or health workers fam.

They want teachers to practically raise their bad a$s kids, and health workers to save their lives and baby sit their elderly while not giving them sh1t to live off of unless they're an RN or Doctor.

I used to try and educate them on what the minimum wage was really meant for, but they love billionaires more than their poor neighbors and family members on here.

I went to Roots Picnic last weekend and 85% of the people were overweight. People need to leave fast food alone! Stop buying bullsh1t and eventually healthy restaurants will open up.

One of my favorite lunch spots Rubio's Coastal Grill closed down all there restaurants throughout California. Gonna miss them fish tacos reminded me of place in San Diego.

$20 minimum wage for fast workers when there are way more important industries that are falling behind in wage is crazy. AI Kioski can't come soon enough, it's really no need for cashiers, if customers have common sense.

Naw not every job. You get paid related to the value you bring. Cashiers and burger flipping jobs are for part time and teenagers trying to build skills.

You want to make more, work your way up to manager, regional manager, corporate, etc. You don't force the companies out of business because you're making them pay new, no skill having, entry level jobs like you would a manager.

Minimum wage jobs aren't supposed to be careers. They're entry level.

As I was leaving the grocery store there is a McDonalds at the end of the parking lot. Both lines were full, but all I could think was why do people pay for that trash a$s food. It’s crazy how much these fast food companies make, and people don’t give a sh1t.

True but business don't care. They billionaires by stock value not cold cash. If employee expense go up they gonna cut cost. It's foul but that is just how they roll.

first these things become out of reach for a fast food worker ..

then it becomes out of reach for a cna

then it becomes out of reach for a trades worker or a specialist in something .

then it becomes out of reach for a doctor or an engineer

this is basically the trend

housing is already a pyramid scheme.
