Colonel John McKee(c. 1821 – 6 April 1902) was an*African American*who became an extremely wealthy property owner in Philadelphia. McKee City, New Jersey is named after him. His legacy continues to fund scholarships for orphan boys.

Following the end of the American Civil War, many former slaves were migrating north to seek new opportunities. In*Philadelphia, McKee provided them with cheap housing in exchange for rents and for the titles on property that the former slaves had been granted in the South. McKee's expanded his holdings from housing in Philadelphia to acreage in West Virginia, Georgia, and Kentucky. He then sold some of the southern property and bought more land in Philadelphia and land in*New York*and*New Jersey.

McKee seems to have been or become very tight-fisted, spending no money on his office, or on repairs to his houses. According to one person who knew him, "he viewed life and individuals from only one standpoint, and that was what it and they were worth to him personally."A newspaper reporting his death described him as "a man absolutely devoid of sentiment." McKee eventually owned between 300 and 400 houses in Philadelphia. Other properties included about 300,000 acres of coal and oil land in Kentucky and Logan County, West Virginia, 21 acres near Philadelphia's Fifty Street and Oregon Avenue in Philadelphia, and extensive acreage on the*Delaware River, in New York state, and elsewhere.

He founded McKee City, New Jersey, a 4,000-acre planned community where African Americans from the south could settle after the Civil War. The city included a schoolhouse, church, and a number of dormitory-type houses. The houses in McKee City were well-built but simple without frills like inside plumbing or heating. Leases were carefully designed to ensure that the tenants improved the land. McKee had great plans for the settlement, but died before they could be realized.

McKee had two daughters. Jennie married the lawyer Sawyer Theophilus Minton and had one son,*Henry McKee Minton, later to become a prominent physician. Jennie died before her father. Abbie married Douglas Syphax of Arlington County, Virginia. Douglas and Abbie had five children. McKee's wife died in the 1880s.

Born 25 December 1870 - 29 December 1946) was an African-American medical doctor who was one of the founders of Sigma Pi Phi and was Superintendent of the*Mercy Hospital of Philadelphia for twenty-four years.

On 15 May 1904 Minton co-founded Sigma Pi Phi, also called the Boulé, the first Black Greek letter fraternity. The other founders were Algernon B. Jackson, Edwin C. Howard and Richard J. Warrick.

image

At that time, fraternities were important in helping people develop contacts that would assist them in their careers. The Boulé was to grow into an exclusive and influential national organization. Minton gave the purpose as to "bind men of like qualities, tastes and attainments into close sacred union, that they might know the best of one another."He said that new members should not be "selected on the basis of brains alone, but in addition to congeniality, culture, and good fellowship, they should have behind them [at initiation] a record of accomplishments, not merely be men of promise and good education." Minton was the first grand sire archon. He helped organize the second chapter in Chicago in 1907.*Sigma Pi Phi is the oldest surviving Black Greek letter fraternity, with 5,000 members as of 2008.

Just dialog purposes for now. Letting people know their families owned land in the south. Before they got tricked out their spot, for a "deluxe apartment in the sky"!

Bloodline is everything... there's no coincidence that the richest man in America, grandson, is the founder of this prestigious organization.

Plus it piggy back off all the stuff we see in the entertainment industry today.

Look how much land and resources he owned, plus the land he got from the people down south to emigrate. And they didn't list everything else

It's better than what the White Man was giving people. The kicker is that people still think that this was just a thing in the South. Speaking of wealthy. Why do you think wealthy Black People still ended up in the projects? It wasn't because of this man. Redlining happened everywhere in America.

Op connecting dots that are not even there. No where in the article does it say he’s the wealthiest but beside that let’s use our brains does anyone really think white america in the 1800s would be ok with a black man being richer than everyone. In 2024 they are not ok with that possibility.

Hes probably a descendant of the "swarthy europeans" the White Settlers used to basically infiltrate the real blacks of America by giving them misinformation to make bad decisions.

DC, VA, MD, NJ, NY are FULL of the kids of these n1ggas. In DC the biggest club owner whose last name BARNES has a literal lineage to these n1ggas and he acts just like it

I'm noticing a lot of folks are caught up on him being the richest person. Instead of the fact that brothas owned land down south during the Civil War. Or the fact that John McKee own so much land on the East coast, and was a officer in the War.

Can we see that you can't generalized everyone into the same group. The stories they told you when you was a child of n1ggas wasn't nothing but slaves, and white men beat your ancestors during this time is completely false.

I'm using Mckee family to show the importance of bloodline and why you should find out who you are.

Or continue telling one size fits all History!
