It really is that easy. Once they have the RCS implementation ready (using their own backend or one from a 3rd-party like Google), Apple will simply update Messages to enable RCS. Typing indicators are included in the RCS standard so they will be there day 1.
RCS messages are encrypted on Android by default so I doubt Apple will want to be seen as the insecure link in the message chain by not supporting E2EE. All-in-all, this is a win for consumers (primarily in the US since most other countries don't use SMS as much) . Standard messaging will be better for everyone. Apple should have done this ages ago instead of having their hand forced by the EU.

I agree that Apple should have done this ages ago. They just didn’t have any incentive TBH. iMessage works. It was everyone else’s job to play catch up.
I disagree that it’s as easy as flipping a switch for certain things tho, specifically typing indicators. Apple is gonna stronghold a lot of that sh1t. A lot of Apple 1st party apps are frustrating to develop for intentionally
AFAIK Google’s RCS isn’t E2EE by default. It’s encrypted specifically when using Google Messages. So already we have fragmentation issues because there’s Jibe vs Carrier RCS (I assume they will all probably move to Jibe)
I don’t think this is a bad thing and I’m not affected either way because I moved to Apple. This is objectively good news but I don’t think this is a slam dunk like people are assuming.
There
WILL be annoying limitations for Android users.
