The ability to regrow your own teeth could be just around the corner.

A team of scientists, led by a Japanese pharmaceutical startup, are getting set to start human trials on a new drug that has successfully grown new teeth in animal test subjects.

Toregem Biopharma is slated to begin clinical trials in July of next year after it succeeded growing new teeth in mice five years ago, the Japan Times reports.

Dr. Katsu Takahashi, a lead researcher on the project and head of the dentistry and oral surgery department at the Medical Research Institute Kitano Hospital, says “the idea of growing new teeth is every dentist’s dream.”

“I’ve been working on this since I was a graduate student,” he told Japan’s national daily news site, the Mainichi, earlier this year. “I was confident I’d be able to make it happen.”

In his research, which he’s been conducting at Kyoto University since 2005, Takahashi learned of a particular gene in mice that affects the growth of their teeth.

The antibody for this gene, USAG-1, can help stimulate tooth growth if it is suppressed – and scientists have since worked to develop a “neutralizing antibody medicine” that is able to block USAG-1.

Now, his team has been testing the theory that “blocking” this protein could grow more teeth.

After their successful tests on mice, the team went on to perform similarly positive trials on ferrets – animals who have a similar dental pattern to humans.

Now, testing will turn to healthy adult humans and, if all goes well, the team plans to hold a clinical trial for the drug from 2025 for children between two and six years old with anodontia – a rare genetic disorder that results in the absence of six or more baby and/or adult teeth.

According to the Japan Times, the children involved in the clinical trial will be injected with one dose of the drug to see if it induces teeth growth.

If successful, the medicine could be available for regulatory approval by 2030.

Takahashi hopes the new medicine could be just another option for those who don’t have a full set of teeth.

“In any case, we’re hoping to see a time when tooth-regrowth medicine is a third choice alongside dentures and implants,” Takahashi told Mainichi.

I've been waiting for this to be available to the general population for 15 years. I remember reading about a powder that regrew some dude's thumb years ago and haven't heard anything about it ever since.

I had my tooth knocked clean out playing basketball when I was 17. I've had multiple dental implants but if I could have a regular tooth I would prefer that over accidentally eat a tough steak and needing to see the dentist ASAP or the in-between waiting with a missing tooth.

Had some a$$hole knock out my fake tooth earlier this year on some sneak punch shot and I had to pay for the replacement myself. I'm a bouncer, we beat that h0e a$s Mfer so bad I couldn't sue him for damages. That ****** hit every single step on the way down after catching hands from my Samoan partner and my other brother before I could even touch him.

I'm once again waiting on the dentist to replace my tooth but I have a single denture that I was given in the meantime. I barely use it.

Missing a tooth was hard in the beginning but I'm more used to having no tooth than the faje one.

Sometimes you get a bad dentist that wants your teeth to decay badly, or they intentionally don't drill out all the decay on a filling so it keeps rotting under the filling until you need a root canal then not everyone can afford root canals so the tooth gets pulled

We were taught to brush, but not floss. I never flossed until I got in the army at like 21. Needed fillings in every tooth behind the vampires. In general black parents didn’t know sh1t about teaching tooth discipline in the 90s.

They are gonna hit you in the head with the price of this sh1t. Permanent dental implants run $50 k on the low end. Root canals are $500 each….Crowns are like $300 each with insurance. The old man said he had to pay $3k for dentures.

Mouthwash is terrible for teeth, and considering the rest of what you believe, its clear that youre on the fast track of having fake a$s teeth and getting finessed by dentists.

When most people think about plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures, usually they associate that with things like breast implants, BBLs, botox etc.

But when it comes to teeth, that never seems to cross their mind.

Anytime you see people well into their 20s and older with ridiculously white teeth, then that is the result of fake, artificial sh1t that was done.

Sometimes its veneers, and various other false teeth options like dental implants, bridges, crowns, dentures, or a combination of that. Also are the extreme forms of bleaching procedures that dont last forever, and certainly lead to serious consequences. None of that is natural. Its all fake, artificial bullsh1t and I didnt even mention braces, retainers, or caps and fillings of materials like gold. None of which are natural either.

A person can brush with whatever toothpaste, floss and try to clean their teeth religiously. But as anyone ages, so do their teeth. Its inevitable to experience everything from discoloration, decay and teeth not staying immaculate and in tact forever.
