icon Jun 7 - Florida Republicans Admit They Made a Big Mistake With Anti-Immigrant Law

Republicans are trying to convince immigrants that the law was just to “scare” people, nothing more.

Florida Republicans passed a bill criminalizing the tr@nsport of undocumented people into Florida, requiring hospitals to ask about immigration status on intake forms, invalidating out of state driver’s licenses or other forms of government ID issued to undocumented people, and preventing local governments from issuing identification cards to undocumented people.

Now, after sparking backlash among thousands of immigrants (who make up a great deal of Florida’s economy), some Florida Republicans are trying to backpedal and do damage control.

On Monday, Representatives Alina Garcia, Rick Roth, and Juan Fernandez Barquin appeared at an event sponsored by Hialeah Mayor Esteban Bovo, also a Republican. The trio, all of whom voted to pa$s the anti-immigrant bill, clumsily attempted to appeal to the thousands of people their party has alienated.

“This bill is 100 percent supposed to scare you,” said Roth. “I’m a farmer, and the farmers are mad as hell. We are losing employees. They’re already starting to move to Georgia and other states. It’s urgent that you talk to all your people and convince them that you have resources, state representatives, and other people that can explain the bill to you,” he added, essentially begging Florida’s labor force to not leave the state that cares little for them.

“This is more of a political bill than it is policy. It does give more police state powers going forward to deal with immigration, but still this is mainly a political bill,” Roth concluded incoherently. It’s just politics and messaging, but also it ramps up the police state, but also it’s just all politics. OK.

“We had the best president in my life, the last 30 years, and I’m still supporting Donald Trump,” Roth continued. “I love my governor. He’s the greatest governor,” he said of Ron DeSantis, who led the charge to pa$s a bill stigmatizing and targeting the some 772,000 undocumented workers, students, and community members in Florida.

“I really didn’t prepare anything,” Garcia said while beginning her remarks, adding that she agreed with everything Roth said. “This is a bill basically to scare people from coming to the state of Florida, and I think it’s done its purpose.”

The pleading by Republicans who are reaping what they sowed comes after Latin American truck drivers began rallying behind calls to strike and not enter Florida, while thousands of workers and families have marched across the state protesting the bill and threatening to leave the state.

A spokesperson for Barquin provided a statement after publishing, assuring that the Florida representative does not see the bill as a mistake, or some messaging bill. “During [the] forum, some of my colleagues dismissed SB 1718 as merely a ‘scare tactic,’” Barquine says. “I, in no way, share their opinion.”

“I voted for this bill, support this bill, and applaud our Governor for making this a priority,” Barquin said.

Lmao Florida, was crying about homes needing to be built. Now sites have to cancel contracts or push back completion dates. Also they started raising prices more and closed affordable housing projects because YT people don’t actually want those jobs they cried were being taken.

Nah i'd argue it isn't that "YT people don't want those jobs" its a fu#ked-up double standard, If you or me (legal citizens) were to apply for those jobs they'll put us through the rigmarole just to verify we have the ski1ls and OSHA certifications etc.

Illegals? Not so much, I've even heard of places that will direct them to where they can get SSN#'s and ID's, So essentially they're able to just show-up and learn on the job but we don't have that same luxury, We would've needed to have extensive work history or education.

No one is talking about this aspect of things tho.

I hear you, but the main thing is plain and simple. Folks don't want to pay 2-5x the amount for food, 2-5x the amount for tech, 2-5x the amount for services, and 10x the amount for commercial or residential properties. America has been allowing it since Slavery times lol. That's the double standard. No businesses are "canceled" because those same "crusading people" would die or be inconvenienced without illegals. Their kids, their parents, and grandparents all would flop for some. America did it to itself and modernized it with NAFTA.

You aren't wrong, I don't see a problem with them wanting to work i do see an issue with there being no real route for citizenship; I just don't understand why laws aren't made to grant citizenship after x amount of time in the US. The harsh reality is that we NEED illegals to take these lower wage positions for our economy to thrive and for our citizens to have food, Without them we'd be fu#ked.

While that may be true, it's not the prevailing factor in why American citizens don't apply for nor get hired to perform the jobs that undocumented immigrants do. That prevailing factor is the indisputable fact that undocumented immigrants can be paid much lower wages than would be accepted by American citizens for the same work, which increases profits.

It all boils down to exploitation and to even hint otherwise is silly.

Nah, fu#k em. Go back to where the fu#k you came from.

These people wanna do everything but fix the country they live in.

If your own country is unstable because of how you people move, why in the hell would we want your bullsh1t over here????

I mean think about it.

Imagine you got a clean house and the neighbor next door has HOA on top of HOA complaints because they some dirty mfs that don't take care of sh1t.

Instead of cleaning up the house they live in, they decide to move in your house. They don't ask if there's space, they don't consider the children in your house, they just move the fu#k in and now your sh1t just as filthy.

You tellin me you just gone "scare" them off?

No, you gon remove them by any means necessary.

fu#k them.

That's why. As illegal immigrants you can pay them below minimum wage. You can exploit them in terms of works worked, not providing breaks, and other abuses. Yes, it's illegal to do these things to them but farmers have gotten a slap on the wrist for literally enslaving foreign migrants. The exploitation is a feature, not a bug.

If you allow them to become citizens, then they must make at least minimum wage and you have to provide all sorts of worker protections. You have to subsidize their unemployment if they get laid off. They have rights. Why would these evil fu#ks want these people they need to run their local economy to enjoy any of that? They know they need immigrants. As evidenced by this story they freak out if their policies ever successfully reduce the immigrant population because of how badly they need them. But they want them to be a permanent underclass. Under the group of Americans making minimum wage and if they had their say, way under. That's why these same people who understand that the economy needs immigrants to function will work very hard to make sure they don't have a path to citizenship and that they live in fear. These people suck

But they’ll meaning put you through meaning who exactly?

You’ll probably be unsupportive of living wages too I bet.

The underlying issue here is … all the scare tactics drove immigrants from their work force leading to loss … and when your quasi double standard applies they often quit or didn’t cut it
